Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The fact that the RMS was replaced in 2005 and not since, that's a good sign.
Leading evidence: 'Replace fact' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean not exactly pristine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion · Original poster
The car is clean, not exactly pristine, but the paint and interior are in excellent condition.

Suggestion
Even if you are buying the car from a P-car dealer, I would still highly recommend a PPI done by another party.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay, I'm new here. Haven't had a Pcar since the '80s when they were all air cooled. Have gotten my youngest to his last semester of college and now it's my turn.
I'm looking at an '04 C2. I've been lurking here for a while and have learned that RMS can be a problem. For the car that I am currently considering, I've driven the car and the dealer and I have basically agreed on a price. I had one stipulation that he pull the Porsche service history and fax it to me.
Here are the relevent facts:
June 2004 the car was originally sold.
June 2005 the rear main seal was replaced
April 2006 replaced the transmission
So, if you were looking at this car would these items make you more confident about the car or would they scare you off?
Any details on what happened to the tranny? Seals have been significantly improved over the years of Porsche's failure (to acknowledge the problem and truly correct it). But a tranny replacement? How many miles? What is overall condition of exterior/interior? Is there a CPO warranty? Is this a Porsche dealer? Did they sell it originally? Get a full carfax too, not that it's a perfect answer, but there could be other issues you'd want to know about.
RMS wouldn't scare me. Transmission could be an issue - would raise the possibility the car was beat on a little bit. However, if the rest of the car checks out I could get over that. Even if you are buying the car from a P-car dealer, I would still highly recommend a PPI done by another party.
You didn't mention if the car was CPO. Obviously, that should make you feel a little better about things.
I am surprised they gave you history, I have heard they were no longer doing that....
GL with the purchase and by all means post some pics when you get her home...!!!
The fact that the RMS was replaced in 2005 and not since, that's a good sign. Porsche got better at fixing the problem as time went on.
A transmission replacement, those aren't common. Makes me wonder what happened.
I have the Carfax report and there is nothing other than title issue, etc. No wrecks, floods, or strange records. The car has just under 29k miles. First owner owned the car 3 1/2 years. Owner #2 owned it about 11 mos. It is not CPO...not at a Porsche dealer. The car is clean, not exactly pristine, but the paint and interior are in excellent condition. It appears that all of this warranty work happened when owned by owner #1. The dealer has all of the books that came with the car and both keys.
There are a couple of little things, like the spare tire is gone and the larger speaker on the driver's side has lost its little "BOSE" logo -- maybe it just never had one. The car drives and stops in a straight line. The engine pulls strong from about 1.5k rpms up to the redline (rev limiter).
Hmmm, it lost the Bose logo? Can you tell if there was ever one there? If the speaker grill isn't exactly the same for the driver and passenger side I would wonder why.
Nothing you reported in your post would keep me from buying that car.
However, I would still have a PPI done prior to purchase to understand the cars current condition.
RMS replacement does not bother me. Bose logo can easily be knocked off, no biggie.
The tranny replacement bothers me. Unless it's a factory defect that is unheard of, my concern is abuse. If so, what else was abused and is waiting to pop up?
Lots of 996's out there. I would continue to look. Walk away from this one.
The car was listed on Autotrader.com. It was at Momentum BMW in Houston, TX. I thought it was a little wierd that it was on the BMW lot and not on the lot of their sister company Momentum Porsche that's right across the street from the BMW store.
Before I stumbled across this Targa that I'm buying, I looked long and hard for a 40th Anniv 911. If you go to the advanced search feature on Autotrader, select "any distance" from your zip code and 2004 as the year and type "40th" in the slot for keywords you're looking for, Autotrader will dredge up about 18 40th Anniv cars ranging in price from $37k to $65k.
Good Luck with your sale.
Hello Another Don
One the best money investement you could get is going for a Pre Purchase Inspection.
Open de front lid and have a look to the adhesive in the underside of the front hood.
In the adhesive you could find the code list from. Tell us the the codes or just take a pic, and we would tell you the stock factory options.
BOSE sound system is code number 680.
Here you have an example of where to look for.
Don't be afraid about RMS leaks
Pretty sobering...... I'm starting to think I might just keep my car after all. Oh well, I've dropped by asking price by $2k+ ...... we'll see how it goes.
