This is a good start, but the real problem is re the 'How to do this'.
Leading evidence: 're the 'how' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 're the 'how' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check /do' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

the dealer replaced the pollen and air filters, replaced the wiper blades, flushed the brake system, topped all fluids, cleaned the radiators, greased all necessary areas (doors, etc.), added something called "brake clean" ($55) and changed the oil and filter, which is all I really needed.

In fairness, this is my first cost in almost 2 years of ownership...I changed the oil myself some time ago.

Thanx, I think I will slowly check over those and keep a list on file...I just passed the 105k and like you said, most are "inspect" so I will do so, and make a check by them....
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

But then Phil never drives his cor, so no change needed...
charge was $1200. I brought it to the dealer as I had some minor warranty issues, but this seems high even for a dealer! (I did have the brake fluid flushed...+$125.).
In fairness, this is my first cost in almost 2 years of ownership...I changed the oil myself some time ago.
What has other people paid?
My 30K service was around $900 at dealer, I think... I have not seen a std 30K service for $3,000, maybe they changed a bunch of other stuff on the car, clutch, brakes, radiator/brake flush etc...???
That sounds high. I recently had my 60K service done (a bigger service) and only paid a little over $700, heck, I even had a low tone horn replaced and my brakes flushed and it still only came to $110.
... I'd shop around, or at least get them to justify the cost.
I guess I'm paying too much, but I questioned the dealer on doing my own service and how it affects my warranty...he said as long as I can prove I did all the recommended work my warranty will survive.
For $1200. the dealer replaced the pollen and air filters, replaced the wiper blades, flushed the brake system, topped all fluids, cleaned the radiators, greased all necessary areas (doors, etc.), added something called "brake clean" ($55) and changed the oil and filter, which is all I really needed. My warranty expires in 3 months, so this was my last visit.
Heres the official 45k service list as I understand it for MY04, which shouldnt be much different than MY03
Lots of inspections and an oil change basically;
LINK
hould also be in the OM.
What I bet happened is that they conducted the other items, which seem worthwhile of course, for the revenue
Thanx, I think I will slowly check over those and keep a list on file...I just passed the 105k and like you said, most are "inspect" so I will do so, and make a check by them....
Keep in mind that a 45K service is just an oil change. That is an hour's worth of work. You should not pay more than $150 -$200 if you have someone do it. If you DIY it is about $85 worth of oil and filter.
You were punked by the oldest scam in dealerdom.
Go in for essentially an oil change, come out with $487 worth of filters (or something like that.....) that you did not need.
Most robbers use a gun, but many Porsche owners gladly hand their money over to the thieves, no questions asked.....
You may be correct... but the good thing was that one of my convertible top motors apparently was malfunctioning and I got that replaced for free under my CPO... So, I 'saved' some money!
And I got a Cayman S for the day, and now know that I definitely will never buy that car!
The real problem is that I am not that great with maintenance, etc, so not sure how to do this kind of stuff myself... guess I should learn and save some money. Any good books out there... 996 Maintenance for Dummies?
Dutchie, an oil change is very (did I say VERY) easy to do on a 996. Takes all of 30 minutes with 20 of that waiting for the oil to drain out completely. There are a lot of threads on this.
The total DIY cost is like $85 for 9 quarts of oil and a Porsche filter. Add "one time cost" of $20 for a 10 quart oil pan and a filter wrench. Check your 45,000 mile invoice. How much did Hendrick Porsche charge for the oil change? $215+??? Big savings to be had on routine maintenance items.
Let me know if you can't find an oil change DIY.
No you don't. WIth the car in the garage, I backed my car to edge og the garage floor so the tires were about 2" away from the entry lip of the garage floor. The driveway was about 1-1/4" below the level of the garage floor and sloped away gently from the garage. That gave me enough space to get under the car to remove the oil plug and oil filter.
Yeah, I'm getting to the point where I might start doing my own oil changes... although, I usually just get it done as part of the annual service where they check to make sure that nothing is falling apart because I'm so inept at maintenance.
My fear is not the oil change itself, but not having the skills to inspect other things for wear and tear and make sure that the car is not falling apart on me. Is there a write-up somewhere or what and how to inspect? I guess I rely too heavily on the dealer to ensure that my car is not going to break without warning and leave me stranded.
Too true!
This is a good start, but the real problem is re the 'How to do this'. For instance, minor maintenance mentions that check the Power Steering fluid levels and bellows... I'm sure I can check the fluid level, but I don't even now what a bellow is, where to find it and what the difference between a good and a bad one is.
I need the for Dummies book!
Dutchie,
Another .02 to consider: I think you'd also find it helpful if you could find someone in Charlotte, or even around RDU, that could help you the first time, especially if you've never used ramps, jacks, and jackstands before, to show you safely how to go about some simple maintenance items. Safety should always be part of the plan.
Not that it necessarily applies here since the OP's car is an >'02..but the early 3.4 cars called for plugs every 15K miles so they'd need to be done at the 45K service.
Even including plugs and cabin filter I still did my 45K service myself for <$200 and the oil I use is $10 quart.
Andy
... the service departments at the dealers/indy shops are slick... I actually am trying to convince myself that having them do the 45K will give me some type of piece of mind. Im sure, in actuality, that's ridiculous.... but im still leaning that way
However, if they do find something, I would hope it would be covered under warranty...
Malakas,
That was my predictiment...I thought it was better to pay too much and preserve the warranty.
My car is off warranty in March and (hopefully) I will never be back to the dealer
Minor maintenance after:
15,000, 45,000, 75,000, 105,000
miles etc. (24,000, 72,000, 120,000, 168,000 km etc.) OK

Oils, fluids: Visual inspection for leaks
Are you sure about this Andy? I thought the 3.4s called for new plugs every 30,000 miles. I'll have to check my manual to verify what the actual interval is.
My 2000 C2 is just under 44,000 miles so I will soon need to figure out how I am going to go about getting the work done. Initially, my thought was to do all the work myself such as the oil change etc, which I do anyway, and just have the dealer do all of the checks.
Nevermind. I just double checked and you're correct it's every 30K. I did mine at 45K service because I didn't own the car when the 30K service was done and I wanted to make sure the car had new plugs.
Andy
Botsy67,
You asked me about the $3069.00 30k service that the previous owner had done at a dealer in NYC.

Thos items above are clearly not part of the 30K service. $320 labor to flush the brakes? Geesh.
It is a good thing that the previous owner was the one that had to "bend over and grab his ankles" and not you! Actually, it looks like they may have gotten him in both ends at the same time!
The brake flush is not part of the service either - it's done every 2 years outside of the service schedule. I think I recently got charged $150 for the same job. Looks like these guys are pricey.... $50 for a single wiper blade - these guys are good!
Deckman,
Take away the $1632 for the bumper cover and the $1437 is more reasonable? I love the $3 charge to process the paperwork for the order. It looks like they waived the stapling charge.
The PO brought the car to the dealer and told them that he was selling the car and wanted them to do the 30k service check and fix everything. I think they took him at his word and fixed him too.
I basically traded my 1972 with spares and trailer for this car. Ending my 24 year track addiction cold turkey. I still get the shakes when I'm around hot early air cooled engines. Maybe it is just the gas and oil fumes?
