They did such a great job that when I went to trade the car in two years later a number of dealers put micrometers on the repaired sections and could not tell they had been repainted.

Any concentrated polishing will also burn through the clear and change the appearance of the paint (been there, done that).

You know if you pushed the issue I'm sure if you found out who it was you could seek that is was vandalism and the person "hit & ran" coming to a Felony conviction.....
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I pull into the garage at my work today and the garage attendant is doing the usual "wrap-around" to check for dings/dents, etc. He comes to the passenger side rear quarter panel and notices two long sratches.. OH, what do you know?!! SOMEONE F'ING KEYED MY CAR - TWICE! Grrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeaat. I don't know who did it, but I would love to get my hands around that motherf*****! I'm sorry guys... Really need to VENT right now
WHY WHY WHY?
Has anyone been keyed before? If so, how much did it cost to buff out? My scratches are not that deep and about 2 feet long.. ugh THIS IS SO ANNOYING. I don't get how people can do this type of ****. Sorry for the early morning ranting ---
It is all about jealousy. You have something that someone has dreamt about for many years but can not afford.
To mitigate this sick persons ego they have to cause this damage. People that commit these acts really need help.
I have been through this on former vettes. Now I am very aware when the P Car is in public. Unfortunately this is wrong but if I caught some sick f**k keying my new Porsche I would probaby try to do bodily harm to them. I know you cant kill someone for committing an act of vandalism but sometimes people become insane for a few seconds and do bad things to folks that mess with their possessions.
It is really a shame we live in a society with sick people. In the past 30 years I have been keyed twice normally in the first year of ownership. The car never looked the same after being keyed. Buffing on deep scratches does some good but in the sun its never as it was.
Fortunately I never saw the two sickos that keyed me or I just may be writing this from prison now.
Cabman
Why? Jealosy as cabman pointed out. A guy once keyed my new explorer, the security guy actually cought him in the act. he was a middle class bus. man, he said he just hated SUV's, what an a-hole. Bottom line, vandalism is a cowardly act, much like it's larger cousin, terrorism.
evo_333 - They can probably be buffed out as long as they are not deep. I've done numerous cars that have been keyed and my rule of thumb is that as long as they are not very deep I can get them out or at least make them less visible.
You need to make sure that the people who are doing this for you know when to STOP so they don't go through the paint and that they don't burn the paint. I typically use 3 steps of polish and keep a spray bottle of ice water with me to keep the temps on the body panel down to avoid burning the paint.
Oh it's ok to rant. Id be pulling my hair out in frustration. Maybe jealosy or just some kid that was board at the time. I have had a lot of luck with 3M miracle hand glaze. If you don't have any, try semichrome polish. I apply it with my finger snd I don't bare down at all. Let the polish do the work. It will at least make it less noticable. On the darker side if you must repaint(****!) a shop that the p-dealer uses told me you must repaint entire panel(probably just clearcoat. He said it cant be blended. My car is AS which is metalic. Goog luck brother and I hope the damage is minimul....F$$KING A$$HOLES!!!!!
thanks for the advice fellas... I can't concentrate at work right now, arrghhh!
nick s - if she ends up going to the bodyshop, ill let them know your instructions... thx man
mundman - where'd you get the 3M miracle hand glaze? I assume any auto shop? I pray that it's not going to be as serious to repaint the entire panel... ugh we'll see.. and I agree, FU**ING A$$HOLES!!!
Don't use the 3M products. I used them for years and even though they are good products, Menzerna is simply the best.

my car has been keyed in 4 different places since i've gotten it. the worst thing is, i can't fix it until i go back home cause i have a feeling it'll happen again! so i hafta drive around with a keyed car until the summer when i can go back and get it all fixed up.
how much do shops usually charge for buffing out scratches? if it has to be repainted the whole panel must be repainted? (just to reiterate)
Sorry to hear that evo.
I have heard of a company called chipsaway that will repair scratches and doesn't require a complete respray. I personally haven't used them but plan on having a technician address some rock chips on my bumper. If all looks good then I will allow him to address some scratches.

My friend had his viper keyed from end to end the first week he got it. He was so pissed. I see that every has said to buff out the marks if you can but don't dread like I would to get it repainted. My fired was able to take his viper to a very good body shop that dealt only in Vipers. I am not sure about the process but they use a computer to determine how much paint is needed and what thickness. Bottom line is that you can NOT tell the difference from the factory paint to the new paint. It looks awsome. Just look around your area and ask some exotic car dealers. His insurance also paint for.
I really feel for you. It has not happened to me on this car but I have had it on other cars and it makes you sick. I totally understand that you can't concentrate - I get the same way.
Here's hoping you meet some stunning woman while waiting for the car to be fixed and it will all turn out to be worthwhile.

I had my daily driver keyed in a parking garage at the law office about 2 months ago!!! Why? I have no clue.... Now every time I go there I park next to the security booth and walk the extra distance. Yesterday when I had to appear I ended up making friends with the attendant so he could keep an eye for me. If he had given me a special spot I would have tipped him but since I didn't get anything special.... "no tip"..... just paid the $16.00
The daily driver M3 is white so you can't really notice..... but it's just the act that pissed me off......

Dude, that sucks. When I had my bmw 328ic someone bent my car phone antenna and stole my radio antenna, it was Christmas eve too. WTF is wrong with people.
Jon,
I sorry to here that, I know how you feel. If you need a body shop PM me and I will give you the name of the guys who did all the work on that car. They are the ones who put the wing on, painted the side skirts and did the front spoiler for me. You won't be disappointed. I am going over to that shop tonight to pick something up from them, I will tell them what happened.
Yeah seriously WTF is wrong with people these days! its amazing how many people have run into similar issues.. its not even about the $$, it's the fact that someone could pull out their keys and scrape a total strangers car! ugh
nickS - how much is a round trip ticket from where you are to NY?
barry - thx... one can only hope for that situation
Bill - Thanks for the help! Your "old" baby got scatched, I'm sure you're just as P'ed off as I am! I'll PM you though
You know if you pushed the issue I'm sure if you found out who it was you could seek that is was vandalism and the person "hit & ran" coming to a Felony conviction.....

Freaking-moronic-turd-monkeys!
Penguinking: My car is currently in the body shop getting the front bumper repaired for a scratch, in preparation for a clear-bra install next week. I tried the touch-up paint DIY approach last weekend, but on metallic paint it just doesn't work all that well. Even though the tone is right, the metallic flake concentration seems different and is hard to match -- thus I left it to the professionals to fix.
Sorry to hear about your car getting keyed.
I still can't believe the places I parked my old 928 over the years and it was never touched!
As far as the scratches, I doubt they will "buff" out. If there is any depth to them they will be through the clear coat. Any concentrated polishing will also burn through the clear and change the appearance of the paint (been there, done that).
The "good" news is the state of the art of paint-blending small touched up areas and then clearcoating the entire panel has made it possible for the repairs to be undetectable. Just find a really good body shop - you don't want to use a mobile service.
Right on!!
I absolutely hate SUV's but never would I even consider touching another person's car let alone cause any damage to it in anyway. Somebody keyed a new Mustang of mine a long time ago and I was so pissed I turned blue.
You are right it is a cowardly act. Whoever did it is a total ****.
Insurance does cover it but you have to think about what the deductable is. In the end you might as well just pony up the cash.
My 996 was keyed in the frickin COSTCO parking lot when I was in for only 30 minutes or so. Worst part is that I parked away from others so the car was nowhere near other cars. Somebody had to actually go out of their way to do it. Sick f*cks!
I just talked to my Dad last week and their 1 year old CLK500 was keyed from front to back. The worst part is that it happened 1 day before that were to deliver the car to the new owners that bought it from them!
evo-333:
If you can't buff out the scratches and you're anywhere near L.I. there's Elrich Auto Body in Acquabogue that does the best work on Porsche's. A few years ago a car wash attendant ran my 996 into the back of an SUV and did $2,500 worth of damage. Storms Motors sent me to Elrich. They did such a great job that when I went to trade the car in two years later a number of dealers put micrometers on the repaired sections and could not tell they had been repainted.
For someone who doesn't know what they're doing this is true. However, I have gotten scratches and key marks out of paint that when you first looked at it you would have sworn needed a repaint.
Burning is a result of too much friction that causes the body panel to get to hot and changes the color of the paint. Again, if you don't know what you're doing then you can easily burn the paint.
I have decided that either I drive this car, It's parked in my garage, or someone is sitting in it while it's parked. I could not bare to see any damage to my car. It would question my sanity and if I ever found someone F@#king with it. I hope to god they can run really fast because I am probably going to face assualt charges! I have owned Corvettes and Bmw's and nobody has ever messed with them. I guess living in Canada does have a few Advantages. Beer, Polar bears, Whale Blubber, not much crime.......
