This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Why are so few 996's equiped with the manual limited slip differential? I know about PSM. I am thinking of changing my dif out for a limited slip unit. Any thoughts are appreciated... The car is almost a daily driver, 04 C2, used in the snow on occasions, 5-6 driver ed events per year. Any ideas on $$$$ and difficulty in the swap??? Thanks in advance....

POST 2Original post

Dave's C2 does NOT have PSM, and we have recently done a diff swap. Not changing gears, but entire differential casings with gears already installed. Ive looked around and found Quaife at around $1200 or so. Im guessing that that is just the LSD unit, and not a full differential casing with gears and LSD.

POST 3Original post

This is gonna sound like a dumb question but what is the usefulness of an LSD, if any, in day to day driving. My car has one (according to the options sticker) but I'm not sure if it does me any good.

POST 4Original post

Well Tim, if you feel like you do not need it, I will gladly give you my non-LSD. Just give me the word and I will drive to meet you and swap trannys. Chad

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

HEY...... Chad....I posted the thread so I get first dibs on the dif.....lol. Anyway Tim, in low traction situations ie wet or snow, the LSD will transmit power, to a certain extent, to the wheel that has the most grip. In a normal or "open" dif, power continues to be delivered to the spinning wheel not the one with the most grip, leaving you just "spinning your wheels". I live in NJ so my car sees snow on occasion. Living in TX you may not see this advantage. Hope this helps.....

POST 7Original post

Indeed. So on the track when exiting a corner this insures that the "loaded" wheel recieves enough power??

POST 9Original post

is there a way to tell if you have the limited slip? i have no clue as i bought mine used, and i'd like to find out

POST 10Original post

If you look on the sticker in the trunk and it has '220', then you have the option.

POST 11Original post

I believe the selective braking done by PSM should provide the same result, functioning as an electronic version of an LSD.

POST 12Original post

Big difference. Our braked limited slip effectively cuts power by braking the spinning wheel. A good mechanical LSD can apply all of the power to the ground, and distribute torque in such a way that you lose traction much later than you would with our open diff setup. IIRC the 40th Anniv cars are the only ones to combine PSM and a mechanical LSD. I don't know if anybody has added an aftermarket mechanical LSD to a PSM car.

POST 13Original post

Just buy high stiction tires and it is a non-issue for a street car.

POST 14Original post

Or if you don't have the sticker... the next time your car is up (in the rear) on jack stands spin one of the rear wheels. If they go opposite directions you do not have a LSD. If they go the same direction you do.
