Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was on my way to Arlington when I stopped by a 7-Eleven to get some Gatorade. As I was looking behind while backing out of the parking spot I saw the wildest thing -- a Subaru wagon hit a van, went airborne, flew across 4 lanes and finally came to a stop when it hit a utility pole! Without that pole the Subaru would've ran into my car! Holy ****! That was a close call! And it looks like my car used up two of its 9 lives because the light from the utility pole missed falling on my rear deck by a few feet! A couple of us who witnessed the accident came to help the old man who was driving the Subaru. He claimed that his brakes failed. He was obviously in shock and kept wanting to move the car out of the way (it wasn't going anywhere!) so we had to take the keys from him. I called 911 and paramedics were on the scene in less than 3 minutes (it was about 2 blocks from the fire station.) Police arrived a few minutes after the paramedics.

POST 2Original post

Lucky! Glad to hear that you and the car are fine! That had to be something to see!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was pretty wild seeing that Subaru go flying over the hedge after hitting the van. I actually braced for impact -- my car was in the direct path of the Subaru and would've gotten hit if it weren't for that utility pole. After the adrenaline wore off my shoulders were actually a bit sore from tensing up! Crazy! P.S. The old man was okay. His knees were a little sore I guess from hitting the dashboard under the steering column. He was walking around by the time the paramedics got there. The Latin couple who were in the Mazda MPV were fine too.

POST 4Original post

I'm fairly secure in my masculinity, but I would have screamed like a 12 year old girl...no offense to the ladies on the forum. Whew, glad you escaped. Freaky accident.

POST 5Original post

Thanks for the annotated photos, made for a great story. Glad you and the P-car are OK.

POST 6Original post

Not the old "my brakes failed" story.... Glad you were out of range.

POST 7Original post

Yikes! Glad to hear you came out unscathed and that no one was seriously hurt! My heart rate went up just reading it, thanks for sharing!

POST 8Original post

WOW!! Must've felt like a slow motion movie as things were unfolding.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's another picture showing just how close it was! (Thanks, Google Maps!) Somebody else said that it was probably "pedal confusion" and that would certainly explain why I didn't hear any tire screech or see any skid marks. And the Subaru must have been going pretty fast in order to catch some air and trim the top the hedge instead of mowing down the hedge! It's funny you mention that -- I am sure it took place in a span of a few seconds but it seemed a lot longer. It certainly got my adrenaline going! Anyway, the most shocking part of the whole thing was that the Exxon station was charging $4.49 per gallon for Premium (93 octane) gas! Shocking!

POST 10Original post

whew! glad you and seemingly everyone else are OK. No offense meant to any of our more senior members, but this pedal confusion thing causes so many wild accidents, many involving seniors.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 5447162

Yep, we get 'em crashing through storefronts, etc. all the time down here in south FL. Politicians are afraid to call for road tests for elderly drivers renewing their licenses, since they'd be voted out of office!

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 5447604

I think that they should be retested at 65 years old and retested again every 3-5 years. It's a safety issue and many older drivers simply shouldn't be on the road any more.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 5447619

I'd have to agree. A friend of mine is an Ophthalmologist. It is not a rare occurrence that a senior patient is declared legally blind, who came in to the office driving a car, and drives off again. Due to legal considerations, they are now offering taxi service for these folks. Guess how many of these "legally blind" seniors get right back out and drive again?

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 5447657

Yup, they don't want to give up their keys. The size of the babyboomer generation is going to make the problem a lot worse and something will have to be done - we can't have such a large generation of drivers on the road without ensuring that they're safe. The babyboomers have always been the "me" (selfish) generation and they're not going to "do the right thing" without being encouraged to do so.... for the safety of everyone else on the road we will have to do something.

POST 15Original post

It's easy to understand the desire not to relinquish one's keys. Aside from pride, there are economic considerations that a fixed income imposes on a senior which make it tougher to justify taxis. Most cities and almost all suburbs lack viable public transportation alternatives as well. I'm all for periodic testing, and if it took the sting out of being discriminated against due to age, there's no reason not to mandate quickie road tests for all people regardless of age at the same interval. And every time someone rents a Zip Car. Heaven knows how many younger people would fail a basic driving test years after they started driving. More revenue for the states, throw the proceeds into fixing these 19-eating potholes everywhere.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 5447781

A study published this week found that 16% of those currently driving would fail their written test if they had to take it again. Personally, I think the above point is irrelevant, but if someone has failing eyesight, or reaction times that make them dangerous on the road, then they should be removed, or restricted.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 5447826

Yeah written I can see people failing, regulations can change a little and some of it probably was minutiae. I'm with you, for road testing, regular intervals, for older drivers, and everyone if that would help seniors stomach it. Lower reaction times, impaired vision, and loss of motor coordination, I mean that's drinking and driving, but all the time.

POST 18Original post

Prog, glad to hear that you were fine, and that your car was fine, and that no one was seriously injured. Reminds me of a time when I was driving down the FDR and another Porsche and some cars were racing each other. I felt VERY uncomfortable around them so backed of a decent margin. About 20 seconds later, they plowed into cars in front of them that were slowing because of traffic. When you see cars driving recklessly, you just get as far away as possible.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 5447619

OMG - I only have a few more years left not to drive my cars. No joke, my kid rear ended a driver earlier today - first accident he's ever had. Thank God he's not hurt, but his airbag detonated (going around 20MPH) and his Mazda 3 could be history - we'll know tomorrow. The Durango he hit was pretty much unscathed, as was the driver. It's been a tough day.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 5452109

Sorry to hear about the car Phil - I'm glad to hear that your son isn't hurt. You can lend him the TT tomorrow. I'm not meaning to be mean Phil, but some people shouldn't be on the roads. Those that can drive well shouldn't fear anything, but honestly, I can spot an older driver a mile away... driving 10 mph under the speed limit tends to give it away. PA drivers are not great, but older PA drivers are a marvel to behold in themselves.

POST 21Original post

I never really fully understood what it meant to be "in shock" until I happened upon an auto accident that had just occurred. A lady in a Corolla had hit another car performing a left hand turn at an intersection. It was 2:00am at night or so and I was first on the scene and stopped my car to offer assistance. The other driver had already gotten out and his vehicle and was peering into the Corolla asking the lady to get out of the car. He saw me and said he smelled gasoline; I smelled it too. I started knocking on the driver's window telling her the car was leaking gas. All the doors were locked. She's inside totally obviously to us frantically attempting to make a phone call on her cell. It was like we weren't there. By this time I was hitting the glass pretty hard and screaming "LADY YOUR CAR IS GOING TO CATCH ON FIRE! GET OUT OF IT NOW!". Still trying to dial the phone. I went back to my car to get something with the full intent of breaking the glass on her door. Then, I turned around and saw that she had let herself out of the car and ran straight into traffic. Cars came to a screeching halt as the street had a 45mph limit. The other guy ran over, grabbed her and sat her down on the curb while I called 911. She was still trying to dial her cell phone. At that point I noticed her phone wasn't even powered up anymore. Crazy.

No question - it's damn scary. My 86 yo mother-in-law still drives her LeSabre around - even on the highway!! And she had a stroke a year ago!!! When she's nearing my house, I close the garage doors - you never know when her Buick will decide to attack the Porsche. She only drives because she won't let my 91 yo father-in-law do it - and he still wants to drive!

POST 23Original post

I couldn't agree more. With all due respect, elderly drivers are becoming an epidemic.

If I ever have an accident, I want programmatore to represent me. That has to be the most detailed explanation of an accident I have ever seen. Nice work.
