Sounds kind of lame using this cleaning method, but it worked and I haven't had a problem in 9 months since cleaning.
Leading evidence: 'Clean method' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good idea' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean " as was it the buckle or the part' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I cleaned my passenger side one when it started to act up and it got me about 6 months of use before the light came back on....which reminds me I need to fix that darn thing.

It's the receptacle (female) end of the buckle that can be cleaned with electrical cleaner.

Suspected cause
I didn't have the key in the ignition while performing this cleaning, so I didn't discoonect my battery ground, but disconnecting the battery is probably a good idea to be completely safe.

Thanks Andy, What is it that you "cleaned" as was it the buckle or the part that goes into it?
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
On the way home from the great Mississippi Gulf Coast yesterday my
'airbag warning light
' came on. I've looked through the Search areas and understand that this is most likely caused by the ground connection on one of the seat belt buckles? My questions are: "by the light being on, are my airbag disabled"? If so, is it the one that is for the seat belt that is bad (left or right side seat) or all four (front and side airbags) of them?
I'm way to far away from anyone with the PST2 or PIWIS tester or a Dealer, so I need to know if..other than the bags being disabled..I have any other problems driving my Pcar? AND, can I just buy two new buckles and install them myself?
Again, thanks for any help,
Patrick
Not sure on your question on if the air bags are deactivated right now or not...I'd tend to think that they will not work with the light on. If you don't mind this risk there's no harm in driving around with the light illuminated other than it being annoying.
As for the buckle, you can purchase and install one yourself but without having the dealer scan tool it's tough to tell which one has gone bad unless you plan on just replacing both of the fronts. Also you cannot turn out the light without the factory scan tool.
FWIW it's probably best to figure out which one is bad and just replace it. I cleaned my passenger side one when it started to act up and it got me about 6 months of use before the light came back on....which reminds me I need to fix that darn thing.
Andy
Thanks Andy, What is it that you "cleaned" as was it the buckle or the part that goes into it? Also, if I 'should' get it fixed by cleaning....I guess I still have to have the light turned off also?? and only by a Dealer, not an independent shop?
Thanks again,
Patrick
Search for Airbag light threads and you'll find stuff on cleaning the buckle. It's the receptacle (female) end of the buckle that can be cleaned with electrical cleaner.
But yes, the light will still need to be turned off by either the dealer or an Indy. who has the durametric software. A standard Code reader will not reset the light.
Thanks again AudiOn19s, I guess that the connectors are inside the over wrap just under the plastic buckle?

- I looked on the Durametric site and it's a lot more than $250; where can I get one for that price? Also I've read that they can only be used three times???
Thank guys,
LC,
Once you buy the enthusiast version you can use the tool on 3 differnt cars as often as you choose. I have the tool and have found it to be very valuable in dealing with the seat belt issue as well as other DIY maintainence.
I had the airbag light after I installed a trafficpro nav system in my car and sprayed the contacts with electrical cleaner ( from Radio Shack) and reset the airbag light with the durametric toll and all has been good for 9 months.
This Durametric tool is well worth the $247 I aid for it IMHO.

Thank you Sir..........I've ordered this tool tonight. I have a great OBDII reader but all it does is the P codes. I'll just have to add this to all the other readers I have....
thanks again ya'll for all your help,
Patrick
disconnecting the battery for any length of time will not reset the airbag light. There are only three ways to reset it...PST2, PIWIS or durametric...period.
Demosan,
Could you please explain where to clean the buckle contacts and should I un-hook the battery while messing around with the buckles?
Thanks,
Patrick
Hi- I have just experienced a problem with my air-bag warning light. The warning light was not actually lighting up on start up-which I hadn't noticed. It was only picked up when I had error codes read with a Porsche Diagnostics Tester. The error code that came up was No:21 which relates to what the mechanic called a broken 'clockspring'. To cut a long story short, my airbags weren't working because the triggering unit which is incorporated in this clockspring assembly, which is like a circular disc that fits over the steering column and has various wires coming from it. Either coincidently or because of, the air bag warning light bulb was blown when the mechanic pulled the instrument cluster out.
All fixed now.
First of all, the contact cleaner I used is called "Panef CFC free electro contact cleaner" , although any good contact cleaner would work. It turns out, i did not buy this cleaner from Radio Shack, but at a Ace Hardware Store. It is the same cleaner they use for ATM machines and slot machines to clean the readers and currency readers.
I used the cleaner in the seat belt buckel latch mechanism and gave it a good shot both on the driver and passenger sides. I then used a small piece of cardboard the same thickness of the seat-belt buckle latch and inserted it several times to clean or burnish the contacts inside the latching mechanism as I couldn't see an easy way the disaasemble the latch. Sounds kind of lame using this cleaning method, but it worked and I haven't had a problem in 9 months since cleaning.
I didn't have the key in the ignition while performing this cleaning, so I didn't discoonect my battery ground, but disconnecting the battery is probably a good idea to be completely safe. The key is to use the electrical contact cleaner as it leaves no residue.
Good Luck!!
Thank you Sir.
I've ordered the 'Durametric' reader and I'll check to see if the buckle is the problem; if it is then I'll try your 'fix'. New problem is that my ''old'' laptop can not support the 'Durametric' software.....so I have to buy an better laptop.......man, it's always something.
Thank again for your help,
Patrick
