That reason is that they are fitted properly and performing as designed.

My RMS was leaking 2 years ago and repaired with the new 997 seal using the setback tool under extended warranty.

It's usually the other way around: replace the clutch when you do IMS and RMS.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Do you usually replace the intermediate shaft seal while doing the clutch or just the RMS?
I'm considering a used 99 996 that will likely need a clutch soon. So just planning ahead to see what should be done while I'm in there.
Thanks!
FWIW, the service manager at my local p-car dealer told me to prophylactically replace the intermediate shaft seals and RMS when doing the clutch. You've already paid the labor of the seal change and I believe the RMS kit is only 40$.
It's usually the other way around: replace the clutch when you do IMS and RMS. If the IMS/RMS are faulty, they will fail before the clutch is worn. If they are fine, I see no point in replacing them when you do the clutch. Of course, if you see an RMS leak, then do it all: clutch, IMS, RMs, to save on labor costs.
If it was leaking, it would be wise to do it at the same time to save on labor. That way you wouldnt have to pay for transmission removal again. Its not automatic though. I would say if its not broken don't fix it.
Here is my own experience. I know 1 data point isn't really statistically valid, so take it as you will.
My RMS was leaking 2 years ago and repaired with the new 997 seal using the setback tool under extended warranty. The IMS was fine, and the dealer did not even mention the IMS. Also had the clutch replaced at the same time.
2 months ago the IMS started weeping and the dealer repaired it with new bolts. Again this is under warranty. They mentioned that they often recommend the IMS be done at the same time as the RMS even in the absence of a leak while the transmission is down. Funny how they never mentioned it to me 2 years ago.
From talking to the dealer and asking on renntech, once both RMS and IMS are repaired with the upgraded parts, they very rarely have problems in the future.
I would recommend replacing both RMS and IMS with new parts if the transmission is coming out for whatever reason. It's like inoculating the car.

RMS was leaking a bit, IMS was not but INDY said for the money and his experience it was worth changing while evrything was open.

Do not replace anything that is functioning properly. Your seals are not leaking for a reason. That reason is that they are fitted properly and performing as designed. A seal either is working or is not. It is not a wear item.
I was more concern that the seal would deteriorate with age (it will be 9 yrs old now this year). And almost all RMS (and/or IMS) will eventually leak from what I read.
But those of you that own a 996 can better tell me about the issue.
Thanks!
