If I want more technical, how-to type information, I'll use the factory service manuals.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

28 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 2Original post

Got it. Love it. Written by a regular Rennlister too.

POST 4Original post

Excellent book written by a long time Rennlister, Must have for a 996 owner.

POST 5Original post

It is truly an essential companion. It is both informative and entertaining reading. Well worth the $65 purchase price at Amazon. ...Rickker

POST 7Original post

yes +1 ... and my Mill edit is in there along with many RL members...

POST 8Original post

I have the 964 version and it has paid for itself many times over in DIY's.

POST 9Original post

Yes you should buy it. Many rennlisters contributed photos for the book. Adrian is a great guy and did a great job on research.

POST 10Original post

964 version is great; 996 book isn't so good if you're looking for something to assist with maintenance. Compared to the 964 version it had few facts but many opinions like how much the author disliked the electronic hood mechansim!

POST 11Original post

My blond haired Santa is bringing mine so I'll have reading after the 24th.

POST 12Original post

Ah come on Garrett, I took a lot of pics for Adrian in that book. I like it

POST 14Original post

I just got it for Xmas from my gf (Opened present early this year)!! Awesome book, can't wait to sit down with it..

POST 15Original post

Hey Steve! Happy Holidays to ya'! I guess it's a good book from a leisure standpoint, but I was expecting the same sort of thing as the excellent 964 book which I enjoyed reading over and over. It just seemed like the text was constantly stressing how misinformed everyone is which gets tiring to read; it was like reading an opinion article or Internet discussion! Also while the info is available online, I was surprised common maintenance wasn't covered.

POST 17Original post

Garrett and Rallyjon may have a point. The plot is weak, there is very little character developmnent, and I don't think it was ever on the New York Best seller list. But I have read mine, enjoyed the explanations and pictures (all G-rated), and refer to it often when I think I have a question. It really is the essential companion for a 996 owner. The 996 Forum on Rennlist would be the other must-read for 996 folks.

POST 19Original post

Garrett, Merry Christmas to you too! I agree with everyone about Adrian's book since I own a 964 and that book also. You can go to his website and ask him if you want the answer to why the 996 book is less technical. I think I know why but I will not speculate. http://www.adrianstreather.com/ One of the nicest gentlemen I have known.

awwwww, dont hold back. Tell us, we all know this is the internet.

POST 21Original post

If I could sum up my criticism of the 996 book, and to a lesser extent, his 993 book, is that they mostly summarize information that's available elsewhere. The Streather books are an excellent one-stop-source for a summary of "official" information provided by Porsche. Great specs, stats, options, stuff from the owners manual, etc. IMO, it is a perfect first book to read when you start to learn about a particular model with an eye toward buying one. But, once you own one, and you start digging deeper, you may be disappointed. If you're looking for primary research, deep insights into the sometimes controversial technical issues these cars have, and their resolutions, you're much better off reading Rennlist.

This is why I bought mine, in addition to the historical information. If I want more technical, how-to type information, I'll use the factory service manuals.

POST 23Original post

Enough good reviews here to send me to amazon.com right now!

POST 24Original post

By the way, does anybody have any experience with 911secrets.com? It's some sort of a book you download!? $35. Worth it?

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I ordered my copy yesterday after the first couple reviews! Should be awesome, except for weak plot and lack of character development. b

POST 26Original post

Oh, I beg to differ. There are more than a few characters in there. They may not be very well developed, but they're there.

+1. The DIY/maintenance is very light; doesn't cover the most usual/frequent DIY maintenance, and covers other more esoteric items in very cursory fashion. It is not clear to me why some DIY are included and other obvious ones are not. IMHO, a really great book for general reading; but not "essential" by any means. I get all my DIY instructions from Renntech, Rennlist, others.
