Reported cause
The warranty issue is way overblown and not based on facts.
Leading evidence: 'way overblown and not based' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'way overblown and not based' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check would be a good idea' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

They recognized it was the wrong part, and worked with B&M, along with Justin, and had the correct part FedEx'd to them today.

The only question I have , as profit driven as Porsche is these days, why oh why did they go wth the shifter change instead of a simple bracket?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There was a mix up (apparently caused by mislabeling by B&M) and I originally got the wrong part, but Justin stepped up & got it fixed.
I had the B&M under car short shift kit installed in my '04 Carrera today, and really like it a lot. You can select 10%, 20% or 30% shift throw reduction--I went with 30%. It attaches between the gear cord and the transmission.
The throw from 3rd to 4th, as an example, decreased from 5" stock to 3.5" with the B&M (30%). The shifts are much more defined, but not notchy (if that's a word). Shifting effort is increased a bit (due to physics), but it's a welcomed shifting tightness. Left to right travel is unchanged, so you won't accidently downshift from 5th to 2nd.
I got it from Brandywine Porsche for $175. As usual, Justin Lane was great. There was a mix up (apparently caused by mislabeling by B&M) and I originally got the wrong part, but Justin stepped up & got it fixed.
For you bay area folks, I had it installed at Akkurat in Menlo Park

. I can't say enough about their professionalism and expertise...and they're great guys to boot! They recognized it was the wrong part, and worked with B&M, along with Justin, and had the correct part FedEx'd to them today. George Young is a great guy.
Here's a pic of the gear cords attached to the transmission before installation:
B&M short shifter kit:
B&M with locking plate:
Here's a comparison, with stock shift throws on top, and B&M on bottom. The throw reduction in 3rd gear is misleading, because neutral with the B&M is moved forward a bit.
For those (like me) who wanted shorter shift throws, but were concerned with overly difficult shifting, I can say that this is the ticket.
Now I just need to figure a way to lower my car without increasing ride harshness...
Poursha,
Sorry for the ignorance, is this the same thing that I see on this board as the B&M short shifter? Yours was installed under the car, the others
I ahve seen install in the cockpit???
Thanks
It seems that the lion's share of B&M short shifters people have installed are the in car kit, where you replace the shifter itself. As you can see from the pix, the one I got installs under the car.
One reason might be the cost. Prior to the B&M under car kit being available for $175 from Brandywine, the only other similar kits that I know of were from TechArt ($750) and the RUF ($400 - $500), so the in car B&M for $200 or so was much cheaper.
Apparently the in car kit can cause shifts to be notchy, and especially so when the car is cold. I've read where people have uninstalled them due to this. This was my main concern, so I was going to stick with the stock shifter, but based on comments from various folks, it seemed like the under car kit didn't have this issue, so I decided to give it a try because I didn't like how loose the stock shifter was. My experience (all 1 days worth!) is that the shifting is now nice and crisp, but not notchy or hard by any means. It's really a great mod.
My understanding is that the in car kit takes around 1.5 hours to install, and apparently requires you to make some irreversible modifications to the stock shifter, so if you decide you don't like the short shifter, you have to spend another 1.5 hours removing it, and presumably buy a new stock shifter. The under car kit installs in less than an hour and is fully reversible back to stock, if you don't like or just want to remove it.
The in car kit seems to be very popular, so I'm sure it's great, but I went with the under car kit for the above reasons.
The only question I have , as profit driven as Porsche is these days, why oh why did they go wth the shifter change instead of a simple bracket? There must be a reason, I have no idea, perhaps the throws are too short who knows. But for $175 vs $300 for the Ruf ,or worse $600 Techart, you can't go wrong.
FWIW if my car was still under warranty I would strongly consider spending a couple of hundred bucks more for the Porsche part and peace of mind.
I am a new member with a new 04 Targa. I plan on making some mods this winter and I'm wondering if any will affect my warranty.SSK is one of them as well as Fabspeed airbox, headers and exhaust

I had the in-car B&M on my old C2 and loved it. It is a little notchy, but that's what I wanted. Changes the whole driving experience and gives the car a much more solid feel (think Ferrari with the metal gate). The only drawback is the first few shifts, when the car is cold it requires a little more effort. The stock shifter is a plastic piece of crap with a lot of play in it.
I'll be installing one in my GT3 in the next few weeks. The Porsche part is identical and is made by B&M, so I'm not paying up for it. The warranty issue is way overblown and not based on facts.
Barry, if your question is addressed to me, I did it myself. It's easy and comes with very good instructions. The whole job takes about an hour and a half. The next time will take me an hour, maximum. The only tools you'll need that you may not have are a couple of torx screwdrivers or sockets (I can't recall specifically which ones, but they spell it out in the instructions) that will run you roughly $15.
I've seen some posts where people complained that the linkages were misadjusted after the install and they had to take it apart again to adjust them properly. I'm not clear how this happens, since you just disconnect them from your old shifter and pop them on the new one. I didn't have any problems, it worked perfectly from day one.
Gor for it! Best mod for the money.
Holger, it's too bad most guys don't know you can just unsnap/snap the connectors on/off at the shift tower, there is zero need to undo the shift cables, count threads, readjust....
Happy New Year all!
