If you're worried about the snow, you may want to visit your local VW dealer and test drive a Golf R32.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've got an '04 C2 Cab with 4200 miles. I'm thinking about trading it for an '03 C4S that is on sale near me because I love the C4S ever since driving one a few months ago, and because I get a lot of snow in my neck of the woods.
Here's a look at the car I'm thinking about

What do you guys think? How much of a hit should I take on my trade in before walking away from the deal? Thanks.
GBG
I would not do it....I almost did but decided to wait and get a 997 S next year!!!
Not worth it after a ton of research! I don't get snow though.........
Robert
It's a great car, but you're gonna get killed. Is that a Porsche dealer?
I hate to say it, but wait for a 997S(4S?).
To make it worth your while it would almost have to be an even trade, they'll never do that.
I like it a lot, personally I am not a fan of the light grey interior, would have been nicer in black.
All the plastics on light colored interiors tend to look a bit cheaper, black hides the cheap plastic better.
Your driving a triple black 04 C2 cab, very sweet! Why go for a C4s, only thing I can think of is you like the looks, cause it's not faster. I wouldn't do it. I would only change my 996 for either a Turbo, a GT3 or a 997. Just my thoughts
Thanks so much guys. This dose of reality is what I needed to hear!! I'll think about it some more, and perhaps others will chime in, but it's always great to get sound advice from knowledgeable, passionate, but objective observers. Thanks again.
I think you're going through the new car buyer thing where you second guess your decision and second guess your decision and second guess your decision. Keep your cab and you'll be very happy by the spring when you can drop the top. Take the money that you would have lost on the trade and treat yourself to a vacation. If your really want to drive in the snow, buy a good set of winter wheels/tires. Merry Christmas!
if you really just have to hav the c4s, sell your car, then buy one. Dealers are only going to give you wholesale price and charge you retail. That's why they are in business and you can't blame them really. You get get a lot more in a private party sale than any dealer will allow
Dub, actually the C4S runs the ring faster than any c2/c2 cab FWIW. A c4 cab(non S) is probably the slowest current 996.
Just keep your car, it's too late now unless you sell it pvtly. That's why you should always get the one you want in the first place, even if it's a little more mulla, every time you see the model you realy wanted, you'll 2nd guess yourself.

C4S Surgeon, on a track for sure, real world in a atraight line, a C2 will out accelerate s C4S, same power lighter weight. A C4S and a C2 cabrio probably offer about the same acceleration.
For me the pleasure and purity of a rear wheel drive, rear engined Porsche is second to no other experience. Feeling the tail slide out then counter steering to bring it back into line is an awesome feeling. Don't get me wrong the C4s is an awesome machine, if u need it due poor weather, nothing is more secure than 4wd in rain and snow, ask me I used to live in Switzerland, and owned a Subaru Impreza STI, nothing could keep up in poor weather. In the dry the driving pleasure of a C2 or GT3 is unparrelled IMO. I am biased, because I live in Dubai, no rain no snow and no need for 4wd, I find it funny that people want C4s's over here, must be the looks.
My 996 C2 is awsome is the snow, I live in Ontario Canada and we get Snow....I have a set of Goodyear GW3 and the car pulls away from anything that is beside me in the snow..Example the other day we got around 12"...... 4 x 4 were in the ditch and i just sailed on by...I love the look on peoples faces as i pass them in a sports car!
I would only consider a straight up trade, and they will not go for that in a million years. The fact of the matter is your car is a very nice '04, you would be trading for an '03 , so they may even owe you money
. just keep your cab.
Thanks again to all. I'm keepin' my cab!!!
When it comes to Porches, I find that I behave like my 6 year old son who always looks at his twin sister's toy and thinks it's better than his, and wants it. (Even if his toy is exactly the same, or better).
If you're worried about the snow, you may want to visit your local VW dealer and test drive a Golf R32. I did, and bought one on the spot. It's got a 3.2 V6 (241 hp, 235 ft/lb) and it's all-wheel drive.
You could get into one of these (while keeping the C2) for probably close to the hit(s) you'd take for the trade.
This way you've got a very fun winter car, and your C2 stays safe in the garage.
Thanks MJM. I already have a snow car (SUV), but I want to sell it and just have two cars instead of three. The expense of three cars (one for the wife and kids, two for me) PLUS not being able to drive the P car for most of the winter, is a real bummer for me. I like the idea of just having the P-car and drive it all of the time.
Dubai: here's a poor quality pic for you (the best I've got):
GBG-I just bought an '03 C4S Gurads Red and traded my '95 C2. I suggest you read some reviews of the '03 before deciding against it as I am very pleased-I drove some '04 C2s and I think the C4S has it all over them. My opinion does not factor what it might cost you to do this, but I would sell your C2 in a private sale not in a trade. Good luck, can't really go wrong no matter which way you go. P.S. My car is identical except for color to the one you are looking at and you should be able to knock several thousand off the price unless the market is tough where you are.
Chuckla,
I looked at a Guards Red 03 C4S before I bought my car. I loved the car and think the color is fantastic but I felt as though every cop for miles around would start twitching as soon as I left the garage
I agree with you though that the C4S has the advantage - that flared rear makes all the difference.
I have put snow tires on too and the thing is incredible. No major snow yet but in the small amounts that we have had (probably up on 1) the car is awe inspiring in the confidence it provides.
Good luck with the new car!
Barry
Hw1, just bought snows tirerack, you wil need new rims, lots of cheap knockoffs on ebay. I did last winter w/o snows, it did (barely) ok, just ok. The other day it got a little squirrely, that's when I pilled the trigger on the snows.
H1 and Surgeon: dumb question, but pls describe how you get the snows put on. I figure you keep the tires on wheels in your garage-do you change them yourself or what? Thanks. Really like that blue, H1. Also, which snows did you buy and how are they on dry pavement?
When I lived in Michigan, the greatest feeling there was when I would unveil my cab and run it with the top down. I was always envious of the c4s's that were able to run in the winter, but their cars also deteriorated much faster, and looked much worse in a ditch. You have the perfect situation right now, the winter truck, the summer sports car. Life is better appreciated when you get to experience the polar extremes; and nothing beats that first drive of the spring. The C4S is the hottest car next to the turbo, but you have to decide if you want to give up the top down sunday drives with the kids in the back. I would enjoy the cab and look forward to upgrading your next newer porche.
I bought a used set of wheels on ebay and a barely used set of snow tires off another rennlister. Now I have two sets of wheels - one with regular tires and one set with snows. I bought the same wheels so that I can swap them around as necessary and keep a 'good' set and a set that is not quite so perfect.
For my previous car I did not buy the extra set of wheels but it was a royal PIA to have to take the wheels down to the tire place, then bring the car, then wait ages, then drive back, get the mini van and go back for the wheels that were taken off. It also meant that the wheels had to be balanced again I each time and they did not always get it right first try (wasting more time).
