I'm thinking of getting a '99 996, and wondered what type of differential comes stock on the car. Is it an open diff? It appears that a Limited Slip was available as an option, so that makes me think the stock diff is an open diff.

Limited slip is an option, but as it turns out a rare one. Finding a 996 with is a good find. The stock (base option) is an open dif. Good luck. Chad

How do you know if you have that option? what is the code in the VIN # that indicates this?

Option 220 is the Limited Slip. Codes are on a label stuck to the underside of your hood.

Thanks for the information. I just checked the trunk sticker and my car has it. The window sticker from my 1999 shows Traction Control with ABD as a $1,215 option. Maybe LSD is part of this option?

Sal - No. Unfortunately, M220 option (LSD) is a seperate option. It will be noted on the hood sticker. -Chad
