My father recently took delivery of an RS4 cab and we used the annual Turkey day road trip to complete the break-in period.
Leading evidence: 'Use annual turkey day road trip' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'previous suggestion of a misaligned shifter' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair ...over and over and over' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I would expect it to be more of a syncro problem if it only occurred during slow speed gear changes (not that you would want to shift into first at anything over 6mph).

On the trip back, I remember stopping at a light and realizing we had crossed the 1200 mile threshold, allowing "brief flirts" with redline and full throttle, so we decided to test her from a dig, so I hit the S button and off we went.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm really pleased that it worked out and you have a wonderful car.
After a 5 month wait, took delivery of new '08 S4 yesterday. Great car in special order color, Northern Blue. It looks better in the sun, but since it's been snowing here on/off for the 2nd day, this is the best I can do. It's my work car, NOT a garage queen!!
Awesome car. I think that's the car I would want as a secondary driver. I've always been a fan of Audi, especially in the last 5 years or so. Just great all-around cars, and I love their interiors, too.
Very nice car, and I love the colour.... (Canadian Spelling).
I had an Audi Coupe years ago...fun car while I had her but expensive to repair ...over and over and over again...
It is Northern Blue! Cloudy day and rotton digital camera. It's similar to Dolphin in hue, but has blue/purple in it (especially in sunlight) but much more metallic flake than Dolphin. I originally ordered the car in Dolphin but changed my mind a week later to get this color. It's very pretty.
Here's why I didn't post it - really not a great shot. The new S4 came through with RS4 aluminum pedals, which are nice but don't show up in this pic. Seats are silver/white, a nice contrast to the Northern Blue exterior, tough to keep clean, but you all know that I'm not spending enough time there to get it dirty.
Nice car Phil! The photos look great. Drive it like you stole it.... oh, hold on you did.
Glad to see that they handed over the keys and you took the brave step of driving it home!
Have fun in the slush.... prefect weather to play.
Wayne, no truer words were EVER spoken!
BTW - do you really think he drive it home? I'll bet he had it flat-bedded to the house.
Phil, VERY NICE!
I can see why you were so anxious once the car was delivered! Good job!
Flatbedded? Are you nuts? Had it shipped 5 miles via enclosed trailer.
And Tim, thanks to you and Wayne for your very good advice on the sale. I did very well with the deal, no question!
Glad to help. I'm really pleased that it worked out and you have a wonderful car. Nice photos... if I hadn't bought a car per year for the last two years I'd be tempted.... my wife would kill me. She's already making noises like she's overdue for another car.
Hey Phil....fantastic car. While I've never owned an Audi......that would be the model I'd grab. If I opt for another sedan down the road....that would be it. Enough of the Bimmers....awful in the snow....Beautiful color too....drive it well. That car has to be a top 5 DD.
Best,
J
Phil, that car will never let you down. It's been rock solid for my friend who drives it like he stole it.
(we went head to head on I-95 at about 3am... long story... he pulled way ahead of me very fast until we hit triple digits)
Riad, agree! I've had 2 S4's previously - they're really wonderful sedans. Looked at a 335xi, but couldn't pull the trigger. It just didn't do it for me - my wife wishes it did, because BMW pricing and leasing is just so much better than Audi.
Wow its interesting that the S4 now also comes with the 'brushed metal' mirrors. That used to be the identifier of the RS4.
That's what I love about Audi - there performance models are very subtle (as opposed to the stock models).
Great purchase, I'm sure you will enjoy it.
The S4's actually have had the brushed metal mirror look since '04 - they were real aluminum housings then. In '05, they changed to plastic with powdercoating to save $$, I guess. RS4 mirrors are silver also, but look more like those on M3's. These cars are deceptively fast and fun as daily drivers. Nice car with lots of gadgets on it - but much more intuitive than BMWs - I still can't figure out how to tune the radio on my wife's car!!
Congrats, Northern Blue is an awesome color and incredibly rare, I've been hoping to see one in the flesh. I love all the Audi blues. Audi first offered aluminum housings in the U.S. on the S4 back in '01 with the "enhance sport package." Even the RS4 mirrors are actually plastic now. I'd offer you a great deal on an AWE cat-back, but I think it only fits the B6, due to the change to quad tips.
Beautiful car,
Andrew
I've been thinking an Audi 4 for my winter driver and occasional 4 seat family car in the summer. Is an RS4 worth the money for that role? No plans to track it.
I would have to say if you have the means, 100%, definitely yes. My father recently took delivery of an RS4 cab and we used the annual Turkey day road trip to complete the break-in period. On the trip back, I remember stopping at a light and realizing we had crossed the 1200 mile threshold, allowing "brief flirts" with redline and full throttle, so we decided to test her from a dig, so I hit the S button and off we went. I was shocked, the car literally leaps off the line and hits 8 grand in about the time it takes you to shift to 2nd gear and then it's off again, leaping forward. The engine sounds incredible under full throttle, in sport mode. Compared to my PSE, it's got a raw, meaty tone, like it's ripping the pavement apart behind you. I was very impressed, we completed a 700+ mile round trip up and down the east coast in complete comfort, quiet and safety, but the power and handling is there anytime you want to get frisky. Coming from a B6 S4, the car is a huge improvement. DRC gives it the handling edge to really cross into the "sports car" category when needed, with extremely flat and neutral cornering, and the 4.2 FSI V8 is incredible in every respect. Plus there's the 40/60 rear bias torsen... Ok, I'll stop rambling now.
Thanks! the color truly is awesome. I'm having a trans issue - the shift from neutral to 1st is very tough - doesn't smooth out when car is warm either. Need to put in 2nd, then into 1st to engage it. I'm taking it in Monday for the techs to evaluate it. They may tell me it's normal, but seems to me that's not the case. These cars have had similar trans problems reported previously - especially getting reverse engaged. All other shifts are smooth as silk, just the N->1st is a problem. Could this be a synchro issue?
Sometimes it's just the angle adjustment of the lever itself, hopefully that's the case. Does this happen while driving at low (very low) speed or only when stopped? If you are having this problem from a deadstop I would think it points more toward lever alignment or shift fork. I would expect it to be more of a syncro problem if it only occurred during slow speed gear changes (not that you would want to shift into first at anything over 6mph). How is the 1-2 shift and movement through the other gears?
Andrew
Andrew - it happens both at low speed and when stopped. It's kind of hit or miss. But works perfectly when I shift into 2nd before engaging 1st - which makes me think it may be a synchro. the 1-2 shift and all others is like buttah!! And yes, the 4.2FSI V-8 is amazing - torque, sound, and pure V-8 grunt. Great motor.
Phil
Sounds like it could be the synchro, like you said, hopefully they will be able to take care of it for you. Either way, I would make sure they document the problem, just in case they don't get it resolved. I've been to some really bad Audi dealers, but also some really good ones. Glad you are loving the car, Audi makes some of the best cars for those of us that have to drive and live in the real world.
Not a huge issue, l don't think - it engages from neutral to 1st by angling the shifter slightly up to the left, but when I shift from 2nd, then into 1st, it goes in smoothly without having to angle the shifter. Sound like a faulty synchro??
When you take it to your dealer have them go with you in your S4 and let them drive it, otherwise they'll say "they all do that". Perhaps a little driving time will 'loosen' up you tranny and shift into 1st easier than it does now. Nice car for a DD.
Thanks - BTW, the car's not a substitute for the 911, just an addition. Everyone here knows I just can't use the C4S as a daily driver - that's what the Audi is for. They're both wonderful cars and hope to keep and enjoy them both for a long time.
