The 996 is a tip, but only because when I purchased it used, I only looked at cars that had ALREADY had their engine replaced, that drastically reduced the number of cars.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Curious about the ratio of Tips vs. 6 speeds in the 996 RL community. Did you go tiptronic or manual? Any compelling reason for your selection? Or could you have gone either way?
Mine is 6 speed. Its a weekend driver and, for me, manual is more fun. I wouldn't have considered Tip since my daily driver (a 2006 Honda Ridgeline) is automatic.
Well I outta (in a Roscoe P Coltraine voice)..........you guys are lucky I have a manual now.
hahahaha
The tip would be fine if it shifted firmer, too slushy for a sports car with virtually zero performance improvement parts. Does make for one helluva nice commuter though.
Actually, my heterosexuality mandates a tiptronic, inasmuch as I am fairly certain marital relations would suffer in a big way if I bought a six-speed (which for the record, I would much, much prefer). In other words, my wife (who is freaking hot imo, by the way) LOVES my car, and enjoys driving it, and this was definitely not the case with my two prior (manual gearbox) p-cars.
I do have to confess, however, that as a daily driver that sees 50 miles of congested freeway communting per day, a tip 996 tip is a pretty good choice. My plan is to keep this car as the daily driver well after it is all paid off, and then buy something a bit more exotic, and six-speed, as the weekend/once-a-week-to-work car (i.e., a gt3, turbo, gt2, or even a 6-speed 996 c2 with a supercharger and weight-saving mods).
I have one of each. The 996 is a tip, but only because when I purchased it used, I only looked at cars that had ALREADY had their engine replaced, that drastically reduced the number of cars. It took me 2 months to find one within a 4 hour drive from home. The Boxster was bought new, and it is manual. I use the 996 as a daily driver and while I was not initially happy about having to buy a tip, it has grown on me when traffic is bumper to bumper and it takes 45 minutes to go 12 miles.
As for the idiots who have to make themselves feel better by disrespecting what others drive... Ahh its not even worth it. whether its 993 vs 996, tip versus manual, Boxsters are girl's cars, etc. these guys should get a grip. I hate to tell you, the 996 is an old dog these days, so I don't see how anyone driving these old cars can feel superior to anyone. 30-40k (if your lucky) is not an exclusive club...
I dont know how to drive an automatic
Oh, and I too have a *****
But I had a Boxster so my manhood is in question, at least it was a 6 speed
But, that said.. Buy whatever you will enjoy.
OKAY that's it!!!! MY 99 996 cab with an 02 front conversion (turbo bumper, xenons) and original turbo rear bumper IS FOR SALE!!!
I am sick and tired of people calling me a HOMO!! A girly man..or a sissy!! I am going to be a Freakin' HUMMER H1 or H2 (but a tough looking one!)
I really started licking my tip, but can't stand the fact that besided the 996 not being a real porsche, slow and with a lot of engine failures....a tip is for women.
Start bidding....
I'm with you Nicolaas, my C4S up for bids......
Eversince I got the tip, my ***** has shrunk slowly but surely!
I need to get a stick to make it stiff again.........
Yep, your right again agent 99. In the worst Pcar I have owned is a crappy Mercedes tip. The same crummy car you own
But when I am at the track with my wifes SUV and she has it...I don't even remember how bad a car the 996 is
Tip or Manual
After catching way too much **** from my wife w/ my heavily modded urQuattro, it turned into a 968 cab w/ a tip and that has turned into a 996 C4 cab w/ a tip. I guess I'm getting soft in my old age, but it keeps the wife unit pleasing me daily and that makes it totally worth it.
Come to think of it, after driving manual trannies for over 30 years, I don't have one in the stable anymore. Since getting my left hip replaced earlier this year, I can't say I miss the extra effort w/ my left foot.
No comments about ***** size or presence here, but I'm feeling the need to go drive the Hummer H2 in today's snow, just to feel a bit more manly.
Man, I feel like I need to go give my SO a hug after hearing how many guys bought a Porsche with an automatic transmission to appease their wives. I don't think she'd have let ME buy an automatic--she says the stick is much more fun and that's what the car is supposed to be all about. Deep down, I also think it's a "girl power" type thing that makes her feel better to know that we didn't buy a nancied-up car so the "lil lady" can drive in her high heels.
And let's be honest here, fellas--everyone calls it a "Tip" or a "Tiptronic", but it almost seems like a subconscious effort to avoid having to say that they own a German sports car with an automatic. I wouldn't want to have to say that, either.
It's not always the high heels, appeasement or the convenience factor of automatic, also really depends where you live. Here in FL it is flat and the roads are straight and there are lots of stops. No fun driving a manual, tipronic is actually more fun on the roads here. If I were in NJ the story would be much different. And as I never intended to track the 996, a manual would be less fun to drive here in FL.
On the other hand, all my other P-cars were bought for occasional or full-time track use. All manual transmission and great fun to drive.
6 speed. Would not even consider a tip. Plus, guys come on, teach the GF or wife to drive a stick. Not like its rocket science. Rumor has it, folks as young as 15 have been taught to drive a stick.
Heard this comment the other day and had to laugh:
Boxster - the Mazda Miata for the hairdresser than now owns his own salon.
No laughs from this Miata owner that sometimes thinks he's the only person that's realized that the Miata and Boxster are incredibly capable, almost-perfectly balanced sports cars that could teach the rear-engined 911 a few tricks.
Oh, and my Miata is a stick, too. In fact, I'd probably be surprised if the ratio of sticks to automatics wasn't higher in the Miata than the 996. What does that tell you?
yeah all you stick drivers got a *****!.....RIGHT! married and still having a *****??!?? Maybe you think you have a ***** when you are driving your stick...or maybe you are gay, because you want to hold a "stick" in your hand and move it around!
Anyways.....call me what you want....I drive a TIP and it is nice and easy...cruising along the ocean.
Tip drivers, you are taking the posts by the 6-speeders waaaay too seriously.
They are just trying to get under your skirts (oops meant skin) and you're rising to the bait...
jk on the "skirt" thing of course
There's always something to do with a six speed while driving, it "involves" you as a driver. However, an exception could be made if you're driving in heavy daily traffic. Then a Tip makes sense.
I had a 993 auto-manual for a year and a half in large part to get my wife involved in the hobby that I love so much. Problem was she drove it six times and I was miserable. Traffic does not get much worse than here in DC and I would gladly work a clutch than drive an automatic - especially with that crappy torque converter. Maybe the 996 tip is more responsive but too much of the soul of the car suffers. This is my opinion and in no way is intended as an indictment on tiptronic owners.
996 Tip is way better than 993 Tip. I've owned a 6 speed 996, and a 993 Tip and regularly drive my brother's 996 Tip (he's not a homo, just married). My next 996 will be a Tip--Turbo variety. Daily driver in traffic, or track car, auto transmissions (in there various varieties) are just the way to go, manual transmissions are just so last century!
I've always loved the "traffic" argument against manual transmissions. Yes, traffic is indeed a part of daily driving--the automatic owners would have you believe that they know something the manual drivers haven't realized about heavy traffic.
Personally, I prefer the "creep" of leaving a manual in first gear as opposed to the massive amount of an automatic left in drive, anyway.
Yeah, they must be anti-a$$hole pills, I already told you to kiss my a$$ when you were talking out of your a$$ on the limited slip thread, I see you chose to respond here instead.
I hope everybody with harsh comments are actually kidding (like I am).
My watch is also an automatic...and has diamonds on it, is this making my wiener even smaller (or is it now inverted??)
Yeah, I'm all for kidding around, humor is one of the great things about the site. But occasionally some people choose to get personal for no apparent reason. I never thought anyone other than Ben would make to my iggy, but 1999 defied the odds and made the cut...
This whole thread is a joke. If I pull up next to a 997tt that's an auto I'm going to have to pull over and grab my junk to make sure I'm still male after he makes me look like I had the emergency brake on.
I had a purple (vesuvio) tip that I absolutely loved. It was my first Porsche and was the beginning of a life long passion for Porsches. I didn't feel terribly manly driving a purple, automatic sports car. In order to compensate for my car, I started taking Extendz. I then discovered Longitude. I soon started feeling so manly that I had to sell my slightly feminine purple automatic and get a manly car. I now have a 6 speed Porsche 996 residing in my garage that is a manly color of blue (forget about the Iris part). I feel so secure in my manhood now that I might even start wearing my pink polo shirt again.
Mfletch,
Rebuilding your (second!) burnt 996 by hand in your own garage gives you the gravitas not only to wear any color you want, but to
say
anything you want about the transmission, color, or body style of anyone else's p-car.
Use your power wisely.
Pundit, thanks...only if my wife says I can.
Barn, hey the burnt stuff is decorating the floor of my garage now.
Arnee, my wife wouldn't let me buy it. She says I'm enough of a di%k already.
My 03 996 Turbo has a tip and I really like it.
It's entertaining to see how many folks associate penises with Porsches.
Y'all really live up to the stereotype.
I drive with 3 pedals ( in a TIP) the 3rd pedal(from my kayak) is in the back seat and when I see Chad...I am going to use the 3rd pedal on his a...!!!
