And Toronto uses salt and brine like crazy because it's cheap and there's no place to put big snowbanks on major thoroughfares.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We got snow on Saturday into Sunday. I was thinking of trying out the winter Pirellis on some white stuff - when all of a sudden, the SALT truck came and sprayed salt all over my street. I just cant bring myself to get salt all over the car just for a joyride in the snow! If only they waited before salting - too efficient!

POST 3Original post

I bet those snow tires will still be new in March (Not that I would blame you!)

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought them used, with the 17" rims, back in '07. They still have not seen snow. They HAVE seen freezing temps that would make summer tires squirelly.

No, just something against tires that perform like squirrels! Although squirrels go fast, get great traction, and can run up trees. Hmmm. We might be onto something here!

Lol, exactly. If you drive out in the show, be careful because its like a zoo out there. Well, actually a zoo keeps the animals in cages, and everything is very organized. Ha

I have that same dilemma with the salt...however, I have a new take on driving in the winter, I just do it and will clean my 911 whenever it gets warm enough. I still say to myself,"my Porsche is 10 years old going on 11 years, why am I worried about getting it dirty and salty?"

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7164622

Good points. By the time the salt starts messing up the underside parts, the car will probably be owned by someone else! I just agree that OTHER drivers are what you should worry about when driving in any snow. I would hate to go out for a ride, only to be hit by some SUV that couldn't stop in time, etc.

POST 10Original post

If it makes you feel any better, my '00 has been winter driven by at least two of its owners, me included. It's also parked underground, where temps are always close to zero. And Toronto uses salt and brine like crazy because it's cheap and there's no place to put big snowbanks on major thoroughfares. So that's as many as ten winters, heavy salt use, and a corrosion friendly environment day and night. This past spring, I had everything you could remove from the bottom of the car removed, and the whole undercarriage steam cleaned. Guess what? No rust anywhere. These cars can take a lot more than you think, with just a little good judgement and maintenance. I don't judge people who store them in the winter, but if you're going to drive it, then just enjoy it and don't worry so much.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7164659

You mean the SUV that can't stop? Sure, but throw rain or snow into the mix, and the idiots bubble to the surface quickly!

POST 13Original post

Drive it! A little snow or salt isn't going to hurt it, and if someone screws up and hits it, you get it fixed or go get another 996. It's not like we're driving original 356s out there!

POST 14Original post

and look at that avatar..... he knows what he is talking about !!!

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7164768

Ha! Yeah, look at what happend to his 996 after one romp in the salt! It turned into a rusted 356!

POST 16Original post

I like this idea. What's involved in steam cleaning the undercarriage?

POST 17Original post

I don't do any of my own work, so I'm not sure. But my indie charged me for just 1.5 hours of labour to do it (he joked that it probably lightened the car by twenty pounds).

POST 18Original post

Aren't all the bodies galvanized since 1976 or so? I'm surrounded by salt spray and ocean for like 3,000 miles. You could make a motion to get the salt trucks converted to what the germans use. When stationed there I was told for the enviroment it isn't salt but something that looks like it the way its processed into little white *****. You know how everyone is on the enviroment now hehehe all for the cause of the porsche of course.
