Reported cause
Your real problem is mounting a hitch that won't damage the car.
Leading evidence: 'mounting a hitch' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'mounting a hitch' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check )' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When you're pushing more air with your trailer you're using more power.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

will be towing a small 5x8 or so enclosed trailer with kart. no more than 1000#. can it be done? at the last kart race i went to an RSX was towing a similar sized enclosed trailer without any problems. questions: where can i get a hitch for the porsche?
I think that Todd at Evo has a hitch on his 996...he pulls a jet ski. Not sure about towing 1000lbs tho...you might be doing all sorts of damage, not to mention that is roughly 1/3 the weight of the car. You also need to consider tongue weight to make sure that you're pushing down too much on the rear of the car... My advice...spend like 3-5k and get a used Jeep Wrangler or CJ...
When you're pushing more air with your trailer you're using more power. This will show up immediately in your gas mileage as a testament to the power you are using.
Even when you've found a hitch you believe to be secure you will irrevocably lower the value of the resale of your 993.
All of this in addition to trying to find a secure frame mounting location should deter you from proceeding with this idea as a rational modification.
There is a discussion on renntech about this very subject.
1,000 pound range sounds like a lot of weight. Several local Boxster owners have hitches for their track trailers. I have also seen pictures of Boxsters with jet skis and carts. Boxsters have less torque than a 996.
Not my picture of a cart.
a porsche is not a tow vehicle. anybody that trailers with one is asking for trouble, especially with 1000# behind it. i don't think you're going to do much to the car with the trailer above on the boxster since it's only a couple of hundred pounds, but of course it will add to the wear and tear on the car. but 1000#? way too much. i'm surprised people will tow a jet ski behind their car. with the trailer and jet ski, you're looking at close to 800#, maybe more depending on which jet ski and trailer you're using. then there's the simple fact that you have to back the car down a boat ramp to drop the thing in the water, so the back of the car most likely gets wet. i hate to think what this does in salt water.
The issue is not 1000 lbs, any car can tow that. Think 4 adults in the car is close to 1000 lbs. Your real problem is mounting a hitch that won't damage the car. From what I know there is no suitable place to put one. I mean you got the engine back there and not much frame to weld it on there. The Boxster is mid engine and has more places to mount one on so that is a moot point. Torque is a moot point since old Toyota pickups havd only 125lbs/Tq and 110 HP. It will not damage your engine or suspension, but you will damage the car due to a lack of a good mounting point. Buy a junker pickup, you can find one for 2-3K your cart might fit in the bed, no trailer needed.. Also consider a hitch to mount is $300-500 that could be applied to the pick up.
penquin,
Contact Todd @ EVO. They make a hitch specifically for 996s. If you remove the license plate there is a hole in the bumper. This is to screw in a tow hook (provided in the handy dandy tool kit) in case you need to be pulled out of a ditch or whatever. This goes right into the frame, so it is perfect for a hitch. See the attachment for a pic....
If you have a cab, you might consider mounting a fifth wheel in the back seats, should distribute the load evenly.
It seems to me hooking up a trailer would take away all of the fun of driving a Porsche. Even if it won't hurt the car, I would never by a used Porsche that had a trailer hitch. A used jeep would be fun, but they are not very stable tow vehicles.
I would suggest a used small sport utility or pickup truck.
thankyou! that is exactly what i am looking for. i will check out the hitch EVO has to offer. (sidenote - same company taht makes the supercharger for the 996? just checking)
also, i want to make a few things clear:
1. i cannot afford a second car, not to mention the cost of insurance. \
2. kart plus tools weighs around 300lbs. add that to the cost of a light open air trailer...or small enclosed trailer, and thats how much i'll be towing.
Penguin,
Yeah, its the same evo that makes the supercharger...
Berny, the RTS does not hold more than 100lbs, so no good for popping a 300lb kart on it...
just because you can put 1000 lbs of person inside of a car doesn't mean that you can tow 1000 lbs with a car. they're two entirely different things. as for a roof rack, that can only hold 150 lbs, so there's no comparison.
mechanically a porsche is an over-engineered car that can take a lot of abuse and come out ok. but that doesn't mean you can trailer with it without adversely affecting the car. first of all, you have to figure the shear load on the hitch mounting point. these cars aren't designed to mount a hitch. and what about mounting tow chains? there's no mounting point for those, and i really doubt anybody that's mounting a trailer on their porsche is going to mess up the frame by mounting tow chain hookups on it. i guess it's ok if your trailer breaks loose and careens into traffic and kills somebody? that boxster pic looks like the tow chains are simply wrapped around the collar. that's very irresponsible. i expected better from porsche drivers. others have posted the right solution: go buy yourself an inexpensive tow vehicle.
