Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
I did hear on the news yesterday that a woman in the DC area pumped gas in her new car that turned out to be contaminated gas.

Suggestion
Apparently they are switching away from MTBE and the stuff that they are using to replace it doesn't mix so well with MTBE so they have to clean the tanks dry before they put in the new stuff (well, this shouldn't have caused outages, but basically people were screwing up and people who were told to have their tanks emptied for the new gas didn't get the new gas when they were supposed to).
Leading evidence: 'contaminated gas' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'contaminated gas' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean tanks dry' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It's been a long time since I filled my tank at one of those gas stations.

Suggestion
With the sudden spike in gas prices, I imagine lots of people are beginning to use lower octaine to save a few cents.

Suggestion
My suspicion that it affects all grades of gas, but since most people use regular and mid grade, they ran out faster.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had to visit four stores before I could get any... some were just out of premium, some seemed out of everything... it was very strange... Just a local phenomenon?

Interesting that you should post that. I went to the gas station on Tuesday morning and all the pumps had hand written signs saying out of gas. I was getting ready to pull out of the station when I fortunately noticed that they applied to only the 87 and 89 octaine, but not to the 93 octaine that I use.
With the sudden spike in gas prices, I imagine lots of people are beginning to use lower octaine to save a few cents. As further proof of my speculation about drives' preferance for the cheaper gas, I noticed that there was only a 12 cent differance in price between 87 and 93. There use to be at last a 15 cent spead when the gas price was about half of what it is today.
I don't see any possibility for widespread gas shotages unless Congress gets involved and tries to impose artificial gas price ceilings. Otherwise the laws of supply and demand should guarantee enough gas for those who can afford it. Some analysts are predicting gas prices as high as $4 a gallon this summer.
$36 billion in profit last year is a record, not just for Exxon, not just for oil companies, but for any company in history (I believe Walmart was the former record holder).
There are a lot of oil companies not doing well. There are many who needed capital in order to fund thier exploration projects. As part of banks lending money they make these companies hedge their prices in order to lock in at a guaranteed level. Any oil company who is sitting on some of those $38 collars right now is taking the gas hard, and probably posting a nice loss. IMagine losing $40 per barrell on those hedges right now. Ouch.
funny I saw the same sign here in Hunting Beach, CA........premium was still available but the other types were out! Didn't think much of it....because we all know that there is enough fuel for a couple of weeks...oil has to be refined before it turns into car fuel.... I guess pump owners, didn't buy because the price got to high and maybe they are waiting for it to go down.
Or maybe we all have to sell our Porsche's and buy those ugly Toyota Prius's.....
I heard on the news this morning that prices in the San Diego area were now above the $4 mark...
Here in the Fairfax/Chantilly, VA area I didn't notice anything. Refilled the P-car in Baltimore yesterday afternoon and no problems there either.
I noticed one gas station in Ft.Washington that has had no sign pricing for Premium and middle grade all week. Yesterday I looked closer and there were covers over the pump handles of Premium and Middle grade.
I did hear on the news yesterday that a woman in the DC area pumped gas in her new car that turned out to be contaminated gas. She has $2000 in repairs.
Just FYI guys, I saw on the news a few nights ago why this is.
The latest thing I heard was the the ethanol that they add from April to October (instead of the MTBE) has been an issue (?a problem with the refining/production) and as a result there has been some shortage of gas. Apparently several gas stations were out of gas last week. My suspicion that it affects all grades of gas, but since most people use regular and mid grade, they ran out faster.
There are minimal shortages here in Delaware, but I just paid over $3 per gallon for the first time in quite a while, and that was with the Shell station's "5 cents off Tuesdays".
Mjet, thanks for keeping the faith on the Exxon boycott. I've only bought gas from Exxon twice since the Valdez episode and those were emergency situations.
