I couldn't get that bolt closest to the alternator out, so I tried to lift the tube out with the bolt in place, rather than use a magnet, which is what I should have done, and I'm 99% sure it fell in.

I thought I was doomed but was able to pull the valve thru the valve guide using a strong small diameter Snap On magnet.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It looks like I dropped the 10mm bolt that holds the oil filler neck into the opening that the filler goes to. STUPID STUPID STUPID I KNOW. I couldn't get that bolt closest to the alternator out, so I tried to lift the tube out with the bolt in place, rather than use a magnet, which is what I should have done, and I'm 99% sure it fell in. What are my options at this point? I'm going to go get a small round superpowerful magnet on the longest extension I can find, and try to fish in the oil I can barely see. What are my chances, any ideas? I will **** a brick if I have to have the car towed and the engine pulled for this stupid mistake. HELP!

POST 2Original post

magnet - maybe pull the pan...someone knows - dont jump the gun...I have NOT done this but am sure you are not the first

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

WOOOHOOO GOT IT!! Fished out first blind try with the 17" extension magnet from Advance . WHEW!

POST 6Original post

Good to hear. I once dropped a valve into the cylinder on another car while replacing the valve stem seals. I thought I was doomed but was able to pull the valve thru the valve guide using a strong small diameter Snap On magnet.

POST 7Original post

I think you would have been fine. There should be a screen internally that keeps out debris. On my '86 I was checking the oil for the 1st time. The fine Germans decided to locate the dip stick inside the filler tube. After checking I put the dip stick back and I missed the tiny tube it was designed to sit in and it went straight down the bigger fill tube and I FREAKED. I called around and found a mechanic. He took the oil sump out and cleaned it. Found 3 dipsticks in there...

POST 9Original post

All those dipsticks are on sale on eBay now, right?

POST 10Original post

It does have some sort of screen. In trying to get an oil sample for analysis my 1/4" tubing would go about 20" in, then be stopped. Got the sample through the dip stick tube.
