Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'gone' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'gone' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check vacuum leaks, etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Cleaned the MAF, the throttle body, checked for vacuum leaks, etc.

In over 100K miles of driving my Turbo I've cleaned the MAF and TB zero times.

In over 260K miles of driving my Boxster I've only cleaned the MAF one time and the TB one time.

Suggestion
Well, if you suspect the MAF one "trick" is to disconnect the MAF and clear the DTCs (to reset the fuel trims/etc to their defaults) then drive the car and see if the behaviour/symptoms appear.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have posted before and found most replies very helpful. I have a 1999 996, 6 speed. Very minor mods. Cold air kit, headers. I have noticed lately at start up, there is a hesitation when I step on the gas. Anyone run into this before? Or maybe have a fix I can try? Thanks everyone for the help!
Same here -- been happening for some time w/ my 2003 C4S. There's a delay of between .5 and 1 second when I punch the accelerator, that's filled with a faint clicking/rubbing sound. It's not enough to bother me much -- there's really no performance problem -- but it's also hard to ignore.
Yep, I step on the gas and get a hesitation and sometimes a slight backfire..no rubbing sound. I was reading on here it could be a MAF problem, just wish I knew how to correct it

The CELmight come on but read it because it might be due to the MAF disconnect.
In your car's case did the symptom appear concurrent with the cold air intake mod?
Often these pull in hot engine compartment air and this can upset the adaptation and cause problems.
Another side effect is the air flow through the intake past/through the MAF is upset made less linear and this can negatively affect the MAF which can produce the behaviour you report.
A possible and very easy solution is to make sure your throttle body is clean. I have experienced exactly what you describe and after a good cleaning my car runs great. Might try that as well. Good luck!
+1 On this! Very easy and makes a difference. When I did my IMS I cleaned throttle body intake and it did help! Carb & Choke cleaner, a lent free rag and 10 minutes of your time.
+3 dogpile on this one... clean MAF with MAF cleaner only while you have it disconnected... need security star bits, but HF or Amazon have em cheap (6 piece set $7 to my door for me on Amazon).
Also 3M make a fuel system cleaner kit for approx $40, $30 on sale... this has the gas treatment, spray for cleaning visible build up, and most valuable if you ask me... fogger attachment and can you run while engine is on to clean out runners...
Worked great on my LS430 and can reuse the attachment in future I think...

In over 260K miles of driving my Boxster I've only cleaned the MAF one time and the TB one time. On the same day.
The MAF wasn't dirty.
The TB was dirty. Oily. It was that way because the AOS was going bad.
You can clean the MAF if you want. But if you get any dirt off it at all -- clean the thing over lily white paper towels -- the problem is upstream of the MAF. The air filter is not doing its job.
You can clean the TB if you want. If the TB is dirty, has any signs of oil on its internal surfaces, the problem is downstream of the TB. The AOS hose connects just behind/downstream the TB.
One other potential source of the problem is the throttle body itself if you have e-gas. On my 2000 I was getting hesitation and surging when cruising at a steady speed. Cleaned the MAF, the throttle body, checked for vacuum leaks, etc. etc., but could not find the problem.
Then one day while driving I basically lost and throttle control, it would barely come off idle. I was not sure what the problem was, but borrowed a throttle body from my friend's 2000 and swapped it for mine. The problem was gone. Ordered a new throttle body and never had the problem again. Something had gone wrong in the electronics in the throttle body. I disassembled it but could not see anything obvious, but they do fail on occasion.
