Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It will show you when the car changed hands and what the miles were at the time.
Leading evidence: 'Replace hands and what the miles were at the time' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'limited knowledge, coil packs' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace 4 tires' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been a member for a while, looking here and there for a 996. Finally found one in Colorado Springs and bought it a little over a week ago. Over the weekend, it was delivered by InterCity. (They were amazing, btw) It took exactly a week to get here.
A 2002 996 C2, Lapis Blue Metallic over Grey leather, 6spd, PSM, moonroof, heated seats, etc but not overly loaded. Falken tires. 68,000 miles, paid $27,000.
Am excited about owning my first 996. I have owed a Red 1979 SC since 1995 and have loved every minute in it.( and will continue to love it) So now... a two Porsche owner and I am glad to be part of your group.
Interestingly problems developed within the first 50 miles of my new ownership. Found that it started to stall when shifting from 1st to 2nd. The rpms would drop and there was nothing I could do to maintain them using the gas pedal and the car would die. Started right up again and happened many times within the 200 miles I put on it over this past weekend even at highway speeds( but didn't stall at those speeds, just "fainted" and then surged. Unfortunately it rides hard as well and "lumpy" as well. Not what I expected.
Thought it might be the MAF or perhaps bad gas/water, etc. Took it to The Porsche Dealer in town this morning, the computer codes showed misfires in cylinders 2 and 6. put they could not get it to repeat itself. It drove home this evening fine. They did review the tires and felt they were old, hard and although had tread were close to their useful life. So perhaps this car has been stored for long periods. ? They said new Michelin P2's would make it drive like new. So wednesday will get them fitted.
Am disappointed that something is amiss but am excited about my new 996
and look forward to enjoying it fully once sorted out.
So what do ya all think? Cheers guys, and I know I will have lots of questions now that I have broken the lurker avenue and joined all of you. - S
Welcome aboard!
BEAUTIFUL car!
I would tend to agree with the hypothesis that there might be water in the gas. A car with that many miles, but a HARD set of tires, indicates to me that the most recent owner did not drive it much. That would also allow condensation to form in the tank. There are a number of water emulsifiers on the market but I prefer Ethanol Medic. It comes in a 20 oz bottle, but you only need 1 oz to treat an entire tankful in your 996.
If you have not already done this, it might be worth the money to get the FULL CarFax report. It will show you when the car changed hands and what the miles were at the time. Earlier owners may have driven more than the most recent.
When I bought my '99 in 2004, it only had 6,000 miles on it, and although the tires had a ton of tread on them, they were rock hard. I replaced them and all those nasty roaring noises on the highway and harsh ride immediately ceased to exist. I hope this works for you, as well.
Or old coil packs. Welcome, nice looking MY02 996. Hope you get the intermittent problem fixed so you can enjoy your new Porsche. I owned a 79SC for 4 years...great car.

Gorgeous car.
I'm new to the 996 as well, but I must agree with new coils and plugs. Such a cheap way to get an engine running so well. The last one I did was on my ML320. Indy wanted $1200, I knocked it out for under $300 for all the parts. Car never ran better!
Welcome, let the mods begin, facelifted 996 my fav! when done right! its a slippery slope, once it starts its hard to stop.....hahahahahah...hope you have some extra cash....enjoy
RedCar,

Thanks,
Jim

Red Car again, I had my 'New' Blue car into the local Porsche dealer this week to check out issues pertaining to the hard ride and shuddering/stalling when first starting out. The Dealership here in Rochester of course hooked it up to the computer and gave the car a once over. The only computer codes that came up were: misfires in cylinders 2 & 6 ( I think..or 1 & 6 ), nothing to do with the MAF sensor, etc.
The ride of the car after picking it up last Saturday was awful. Hard, bumpy and loud. Apparently The tires on the Car were not Porsche approved and had no 'N' rating, and the Porsche dealership felt they were very old, perhaps having been on the car for 'many' seasons. They suggested I replace the all 4 tires. The had them put four Potenza on ... and wow, the car feels and drives amazing. Finally... like the Porsche I expected, and quiet. ( except for the engine revs...)
When they had the car on the lift, they said the previous owner had the incorrect shocks installed in the rear and suggested I have them replaced with Porsche approved...
Related to the Misfires.. They asked what gas I had been putting in. Mobil 93 octane. They told me that Mobil gas and 996's did not go well together and that I should use Hess or Sunoco highest octane... have done what they suggested and it does run better now... we will see. Anyone hear this before?
Someone asked earlier about my "Red Car"...my avatar name sake.
Here it is. 1979 SC, Fabspeed dual exhaust, A/c removed, extra heavy sway bars front and rear plus cross over bar in Boot. Potenza tires on BBS rims. Car has 150K miles and runs really great...and THE sound. Amazing! ...and can not part with it, EVER! So now... Red AND Blue Porsches.
Red Car the SC looks great and I can see why you want to keep it. I have never heard of the Mobil 93 octane issue. I run Chevron or Shell 93 octane with no issues. If there was water in your original tank of gas it may just work itself out automatically as you run through a couple tanks.
