I think porsche uses the charcole canister vacc to also control the pressure in the fuel tank.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys! have you missed me? Ha ha.
Iv just been off doing other things. I needed to break my computer habit.
Hope everyone has been well. My poor 996 is in sick bay
I was sitting at the bank the other day and the Idle started to hunt. It then found and RPM it liked. Sadly the RPM was 0. It then would not restart and she was towed home.
I let her sit for a few hours till I got time to dig in, No CEL codes. Jumped in and she started right up. Took her out this AM and she would lose power and the idle started to hunt again. I hitailed my *** home and put her away.
I cranked her up and was in the back listening for the sound I heard while the idle was hunting at the bank. It sounded like a lazy blow on an oboe and it does this now everytime I shut the car down. While running It would sound for 3-4 seconds the idle would go nuts, The sound would stop and then it calmed back down. it would do this about evey 3-4 min,
The noise is coming from the front passenger fender well near the gas cap.
I am pulling the fender-well now.
Any input?
Fuel pump? I dont think so, this sounds like a vacc check valve leaking back. In a delema... Ha ha... No one to start and shut off the car while Im in the well. So close but so far. I feel like a man in prison with the key just out of reach!
and here is my oboe.
Not sure what it is and a search for the part number brings nothing.

looks like some kind of charcole canister check valve. However I can not get it to make the sound and air passes in both directions.
Does anyone know what this thing is and can it cause my syptoms?
although I certainly feel this part is bad. I somehow do not feel it is my issue. I dont know enough about the evap system to tell.
Can someone give me an education on how it works and what it does.
This line connects to a (valve?) at the top of the fuel fill neck. It has no electric connections however. I feel it is when this valve opens I have my issue.
ugh.. I hate when I dont know or understand why something is there.
Hey Kyle, I have a thread where I was trying to troubleshoot the evap system/fuel system. Let me find the link... Standby..
Read through this post, I have some good pics of that system.

Hahaha... you were right! (lucky guess)
BTW: you guys (kyle and pete) arent on RL very often... what gives?
I am trying to recall my situation about 2 years ago, wasn't I refueling my car in the garage???
I get it now.......you changed your name to RPM to cover the embarrassment
.
I get on here when I can. Work has been kicking my *** for the past year. I forgot how much of a release this place can be. You moved to PA? Sorry for the OT Kyle.
I got sick of my old name (used it for years) plus RPM is my initials anyway! Did you see the project I am currently working on now? I am chasing a clanking noise from my crank pulley.

Yes this seems to be the issue, same as yours, RPM, I unhooked the power wire from that valve and the car runs fine and the idle is super solid.
I guess I will order that valve today. THANK YOU!
Iv just been trying to break my computer habit. And some people started to get upset with the truth on a few threads.. so I thought I better bow out for a while also. Something about they didnt know I owned the board. LOL.......kinda like LVdell in your thread..... I was impressed how you kept your hat on.
Im not so sure, I *think* I understand how and what the system does and if I am correct the issue could be one of two items. I think porsche uses the charcole canister vacc to also control the pressure in the fuel tank. Something has to tell this valve to open, I think it is told to open when too much pressure builds up in the fuel tank, a pressure sensor in the tank tells the vac valve to open to pull out some pressure.
If that is the case, the issue could also be the pressure sender in the fuel tank.
I feel this vavle is either sticking open and putting a vacumme on the whole fuel system and then the pump cant pump against the vacc. Now is the valve sticking or is the pressure sensor telling the valve to stay open.
Just a from the hip shot....
