Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
It's fun to read about your car when it was the new kid on the block.
Leading evidence: 'kid' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'kid' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check auto reviews/literature' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Since the MkII's started in '02, you might check for auto reviews/literature for the '02 to see the list of improvements they claimed.

Setting aside the engine, to me the most attractive thing about the later cars is that the interior materials got better as Porsche got back on its feet financially.

I hear you never hold a good alignment using 19" rims on a 99 which is what scared me away from that update.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sorry, kids...
What are the differences in the various marks of the 996? I get the engine size and output, but someone commented on the looks of the Mark II being improved? The only thing I see is the front lenses are all white/clear, with no amber. Is there anything else I am missing?
Mine is MY 03 with build date 10/02. So, I am a Mark II with the newer headlights and the 3.6/320 bhp.
Thanks for indulging me and pardon my ignorance on this one.

In terms of the exterior, no body panels changed at all. The mid-series facelift consisted of the turbo style headlights and the front bumper cover to match. For some people, this is a big deal, thus 'improved'.
Setting aside the engine, to me the most attractive thing about the later cars is that the interior materials got better as Porsche got back on its feet financially. The 99s were quite spartan, and the 00s and 01s only a little better for the addition of the alcantara headliner and the soft-touch paint. When I see a Mk 2 car, it always feels just a bit more worth what the original owner must have paid.
Although my opinion is unrestrained by facts, it's my impression that the front bumper on the MkII's was flatter across the front, earlier ones were slightly more pointed or rounded in the middle.
Since the MkII's started in '02, you might check for auto reviews/literature for the '02 to see the list of improvements they claimed. I think the main difference in '03 was adding the MOST system. You might verify, but the Vario-Cam Plus -- may have started in '03 -- but probably '02.
When I bought my '03, I sifted through older reviews to see what people thought of the car at the time. It's fun to read about your car when it was the new kid on the block.
In general, the '03 didn't get a lot of play in the magazines as it was almost identical to the '02 -- which was the main upgrade from the Mk I.
I have a barebones 99 cab, and I dislike the steering wheel, the shift ****, the e-brake lever, the clutch pedal feel, the seats, but I really like the Mk1 headlights. They are starting to look a bit more exotic to me, and not cuz I own one, I've always like them, but they're morphing into something very attractive as time goes by. And then there are those who hate em'. It would be rather funny if backdating to Mk1 look became the new fad. As for my dislikes, they will have to go through a transformation, and I'm cool with that. It's why I got it cheap, and why I intend to mod .
The Mark IIs have a more advanced variocam system and the bumper facia "nostrils" were enlarged and puckered to get more air to the twin radiators according to the PCA mag Panorama review of the Mark II. you can check their back issue archives on line and get reprints of articles there. I pulled all the reviews of the Mark I when new. A real time capsul. The new 996 was much loved before the rock throwing started from the oil burning, er, I mean oil-cooled crowd. And of course, before anyone heard of the acronym "IMS".
For RPM - Performance sells an enamel over brass Porsche crest that fits the center of the 4 spoke steering wheel and glues in place. Much cheaper than fiting a three spoke replacement with crest for a similar look.
MkII has different back bumper also, with painted over riders.
The word is that the MkII bodywork makes better cooling and better downforce.
I thought the MkII was stiffer also, maybe worng but all the MkII got variocan plus.
The improved itnerior has been noted already.
I for one like the MkI headlight better that the MkII headlights, but I am in the minority there.
One last note, the 1999 model had a cable throttle and a LSD option. Everything after that was drive by wire and PSM option.
I've had two MkII cars (still have one of them). Just f'n love it.
Yes they added some extra sheet metal in the upper engine bay area so that the 19" rim option could be added for Y2000 plus a few suspension components were made thicker.
That's why I cringe when I see 99's with 19" rims... I hear you never hold a good alignment using 19" rims on a 99 which is what scared me away from that update.
I hate the plastic rear window on the 99 cab. Wish it was a glass one. Maybe a DIY mod in the future. The original owner had some nice factory upgrades done though. 3 spoke steering wheel. Shifter and handbrake, 18 inch classic 2 wheels etc. Would have liked the softer leather interior like the later M2 models. Hey the price was right lol.
I saw a retrofit glass rear window for the cab that had a smaller vertical dimension for the glass. Is there a full size glass window top available for the mk1?
I agree with Sue. I don't think 19" was an option until the 997's, though the Turbos might have had 19's on the option list. Bone stock 996's usually came with 17's and then were optioned up with 18's. I believe C4S models came with 18's, as did the GT3's. Once 19's hit the market, "tuner" guys added them to early 996's without doing the homework so see if they actually fit or worked with the suspension.
I don't think anyone makes a glass rear window for the cab that is as big as the plastic window. I think that even the factory glass window on later models was smaller than the plastic. A trade off.
I have said it before and Ill say it again "whoever designed the MK1 wheel for the Tip should be taken outside and shot".
Who the hell drives with there hands positioned at 2:45 and there thumbs permanently wrapped around the wheel.
There really was no point putting those shift buttons there they may as well have been in the trunk!.
"Had they never seen paddle shift"? dumb asses.
There were a lot of upgrades for the MK II but the one that caught my eye was this from a list in "Porsche 996 - The Essential Companion": " (for 2002) bodyshell structural reinforcement increases the flex and torsional strength of Carrera and turbocharged Coupes
by 25%
and all normally aspirated Cabriolet models by 10%". And also, don't forget, the first year ever for a cup holder in a Porsche....
