LN says to check or change bearing at 4-5 years or 50-60k miles - maybe coincide with some other repair/upgrade etc.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here are a few pictures of my IMS bearing cut apart. Replaced it with LN a couple of months ago at approx 52K. No issues prior to replacement.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry, I didn't realize bad quality of last picture. Will retake and repost soon. J

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's a better pic of IMS bearing

POST 4Original post

Please forgive the fact that I am without any mechanical aptitude. Do these picture indicate no damage to OEM IMS? I am scheduled to get mine done next week. Getting clutch replaced and a B&M short shifter done while I'm at it. BTW, any one in DFW used RAC Performance? Would you recommend them?

POST 5Original post

The damage isn't very noticeable. Maybe some pitting in the races/*****..

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No drive-ability issues. No leaking at IMS or RMS. Preventative Upgrade.

POST 7Original post

The photo's indicate a bearing that was in fine working condition.

POST 10Original post

I've seen bearings that looked 9000% worse then these. Some missing *****, others with chunks out of the ***** and the races look like a lunar landscape. My indy has quite a collection along with another indy I drop into for oil filters has a jar with dead ones as well. These look like they could have gone many more miles or years even. Oil changes by the book or better work quite well huh?

POST 11Original post

out of curiosity how freely did yours spin before you tore it down? and did your center shaft have any wobble to it? I just got my old single row back...after it was cleaned up my races had some pitting, but it spun with no resistance at all and the center shaft wobbled back and forth some.

POST 12Original post

Take a micrometer to each of those ***** and measure around the circumference of them.. Visual inspections don't illustrate the stage 1 bearing wear very well at all, but it can sometimes be measured. Based on what this bearing looks like I'd say the driver had the proper driving technique and might have owned an air-cooled Porsche in the past. This bearing is still worn and looking at it under heavier magnification will show a lot more of the wear.

Jake, What is the proper driving technique?

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The bearing spun freely and there was no wobble or play. The ball mic out at 7.91mm / .311 in - what is original spec?

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 9388653

Mine looked like that with 103k miles. I was "not" happy about that but of course it was too late. Now I have to change mine every few years per LN's website.

POST 16Original post

I will post a pic of my IMS bearing as soon as my mechanic shows me what was inside my oil filter. Disintegrated last Wed, but motor may actually survive. Sitting at idle, heard what sounded like the timing chain flopping around and shut it down. No fault codes indicating cams out of time, and leak down was good. More to come, but moral of the story: keep your ears open - especially at startup, and you might hear this coming... 2005 997C2 20k miles and a few track days.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, even though your bearing looked fine, like mine, the products in our cars now are very likely better than original in design and quality. LN says to check or change bearing at 4-5 years or 50-60k miles - maybe coincide with some other repair/upgrade etc.

POST 18Original post

(I'm just trolling as a prior 996 owner - flame suit on) No pitting should be on any *****! That bearing was going to die sometime ......

POST 19Original post

Maybe it was your driving technique. I've read that it can be an issue.
