SS lines for race cars are not DOT approved because they do not last as long racers don't care because they are carefully inspected before each race and repaired/replaced as needed.

Suggestion

For occasional track use, I would invest in better pads then, better rotors and calipers before I even considered replacing brake lines.

Suggestion

Its a relatively simple job to do, as long as the car is safely jacked up and you can either drill out the ventilation holes in the disk or use a hand auger.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

going to flush out the system and put superblue in - i've changed brakes on other cars before but not on porsche, so i've got a few newbie questions: do i need a power bleeder(ie motive power bleeder) or can i just have someone sit in the drivers seat and pump the brake pedal while the other person bleeds the brakes? can the inner bleed screw be reached without having to remove the wheel? one last thing: does the 996 come standard with stainless steel brake lines? if not, whats a good company/brand you guys reccomend for SS brake lines? thanks Robert

POST 2Original post

1. It depends on your wheel and tire combo I would think. I have bled mine a couple times and for my money I have 18inch Cup Wheels and could not get around the rotor and get the inner one easily enough to warrant not taking the whee l off. (then again I have a aluminum race floor jack so putting the car up is very easy for me. 2. Whatever suits you... I have done it with a mighty Vac (hand held vacum pump) a couple times and twice manually when we accidently crushed mighty vac (I will miss him so <whipes back tears>). Either worked fine but I have done it quite a bit with cars in the past. 3. I don't think so.. mine sure did not. I use Goodridge. They have been great quality and have had them on about three cars now. Just remember to change them appropriately based on the kind of driving you do. I change mine at least every two years to prevent ruptures. I know some of you say you don't have to do as often...some say longer... for me and my safety and budget ... I go with two..also depends if they are sheathed or not. Hope that helps...

POST 3Original post

The 996 brake bleed the same way as any other 911's so you can do it using the traditional two men bleed operation or use the motive bleeder. The main difference here is that you will need to use the Porsche diagnostice tool (I forgot its name) to open up the ABS channels to really completely bleed out old fluids.

POST 4Original post

Two person or one person with Motive works. Either way. I tried to and could not get it done without taking the wheels off. It's no biggie for me now since I have track wheels and tires, so I have to take the wheels off anyway. Unless you intend to race the car, do you think the added maintenance of SS lines is worth it?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

cool guys -thanks for all the info - i'll get to bleeding the brakes as soon as my shipment of superblue comes in. road atlanta here i come! what vendor(s) would you reccomend i get brake lines from?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

what added maintenence will SS lines be? especially if i can find a set thats coated? checked stoptech - have pretty reasonable prices for lines- about 100 for full front/rear, not coated though.

POST 9Original post

I saw your post about replacement brake lines, and noted you have a 99 model. I don't know what your mileage is, but by now the inner face of your rear disks will probably be blocked up with brake dust and road gunge. Its a relatively simple job to do, as long as the car is safely jacked up and you can either drill out the ventilation holes in the disk or use a hand auger. I don't think that the holes are cross drilled, otherwise you could probably do the job from the "outside" in....if you see what I mean

POST 10Original post

Penguin - I would thik twice about SS brakes lines. The OEM ones are very durable. SS lines for race cars are not DOT approved because they do not last as long racers don't care because they are carefully inspected before each race and repaired/replaced as needed. Newer technology has made things beter for the SS lines but you should carefully assess the benefits. For occasional track use, I would invest in better pads then, better rotors and calipers before I even considered replacing brake lines. Peter-B I have a GT2 and a GT3, both suffer from plugged holes in the rotors. On these models you can clear the hole from one side - they do go straight through. I can't see why the standard brakes would be different. Best is to air blast them before they get plugged because as you have noted you need a drill bit or equivalent to get the grunge out. Best,
