Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'now' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'now' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean /' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I meant tune up as in inspecting/cleaning/replacing plugs.

are you not supposed to tune up (oil change) every 7500miles??
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 1999 996 has been driven just twice in the last two months. I took it out today and it began to misfire and lots of black smoke started coming out of the tailpipes. The check engine light came on as well. I quickly pulled into a gas station (luckily right there when it happened) and they hooked it up to their scanner and reset the check engine light. Scanner read "Cyl. #4 misfire".
No oil smoke or white smoke.
Any suggestions? Stuck valve maybe? Unburnt fuel is black smoke correct?
Yep, the mechanic said that it's huge amounts of fuel being dumped in the left bank. Any guesses? Anyone have a similar experience? The mechanic can't get to it 'til next week.
Sorry for your troubles, However get a code reader or some type of diagnostic tester. As a point of reference, rich running is usually a result of another problem for which is the computer is adjustmenings for.
Ok! missed the part in your post where the cylinder misfired, my wife was talking to me at that point. #4 misfire start with your coil packs and plugs, you're getting gas but no fire, either a plug (if so change all) or pack, easy fiix. Hope it's not the oil and coolant mix this is worst case (new engine).
There was a short coming from the main wiring harness - $1600 for a new harness installed. The short was in the wire goint to the #4 coil/injector. Should be fixed by Friday.
Update: They sent the wrong wiring harness to my mechanic but in the meantime, my mechanic took apart the connectors in the harness, blew them out with air and re-installed them with electrical contact solution. The problem is now fixed apparently. Total cost was $900 for the "electrical lube job".
