Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had checked cold start valve, temperature sensor, etc.
Leading evidence: 'Check cold start valve, temperature sensor, etc' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check cold start valve, temperature sensor, etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Not even sure on the viscosity, haven't had the oil changed yet (only had it a few months).

The on-off nature of the change suggests it's not that though, at least to me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Posting here as well as Boxster as I'm assuming engine management is similar, if not the same.
I've had a condition that has gotten worse in the last week or so. Now at cold start the car will idle low and roughly, will make popping (like backfiring) sounds and runs rich. Tonight I let it run for maybe a couple of minutes and then suddenly it stabilized itself, idle speed went up a 100 or so RPM and all was well.
When it's doing its poor idle thing, I just touch the gas pedal and it will drop RPM and then recover. Strange, I had the same problem on my '87 Scirocco with CIS, though it never quite went away so not sure of the solution there. I had checked cold start valve, temperature sensor, etc. to no avail, not that it's relevant to the Boxster.
Anyway, ideas? Saw posts RE: MAF, but not clear on whether MAF problem affects all conditions, i.e. not just idle and not just cold start. Again, once its warmed up, and not even really warm, just 2-ish minutes warm, it runs great.
Thanks in advance for any help.
easy check for the maf
when it runs ruff unplug the maf does it clear up ? (you will get a cel for open circut) but the dme will go into default and ignore the maf
try cleanign the throttle plate and the idel air valve with carb cleaner
I hate to ask....what weight oil are you running? Are you using a 0w or 5w40...Higher viscosities can cause lifter problems when it's colder on morning starts....
Not even sure on the viscosity, haven't had the oil changed yet (only had it a few months). The on-off nature of the change suggests it's not that though, at least to me. And the timing makes me think it has something to do with the cold start circuit.
Thanks re: the MAF test, I'll try that. Will a bad MAF sensor cause all-around driveability issues or just cold start/idle issues? Or either maybe, depending on how bad it is?
