Suspected cause

You need to see if its running rich or lean, if its rich its most likely the maf sensor, if its lean its likely a vacum leak

What is a good chemical to clean the mass air meter (of course I do not want to damage the meter), and is it a hot-wire type or does work some other way?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What is a good chemical to clean the mass air meter (of course I do not want to damage the meter), and is it a hot-wire type or does work some other way?

POST 2Original post

electirical cleaner is best, dont use brake or carbcleaner on it, what faults are you getting

POST 3Original post

You can use carb cleaner, electronics cleaner, alcohol, or starter fluid. Each will clean it fine and cause no damage to the sensor.

POST 6Original post

You need to see if its running rich or lean, if its rich its most likely the maf sensor, if its lean its likely a vacum leak

POST 7Original post

Tippy: Your codes are telling you that the engine is running too lean. Clean the MAF, check for vacuum leaks, including the intake tube to the throttleboddy. ANY leak allowing air into the engine AFTER the MAF will cause a lean condition.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You know, from the day I bought the car, it never wanted to keep a steady rev. It wandered all over the place, I blamed it on being the first year of E-gas. When I changed the plugs at 63k, they had a caramel brown to them and the car seems to run rich not lean. I say this because in the past when I would get on it, it would give off a little black smoke and a rich mixture smell, but this could be the compter possibly over-correcting the vacuum leak I have. A lean condition would explain the wandering revs now that I think about it, also crappy throttle response and warm coolant temps on the highway (needle rides on the left side of the "0"). My car consistenly gets 23 MPG but many of times I have gotten 26 MPG, that is more than what the EPA rated the car at.

POST 9Original post

Both of my Porsche have E-Gas. I have never experienced the rev problem you mentioned on my cars.
