I use 2 sets of OE turbo twists (one set is hollow from a TT and lighter: used in summer).

I have found a one-season used set of 17" winter rims (Porsche OEM) with Pirelli winters, mounted and balanced for $1700, but will need rear spacers so the car doesn't look silly (I've been told, about $290 for bolts and spacers)

Suggestion
And if you decide on an option which requires spacers/bolts, I would recommend FVD Brombacher: good-quality stuff that's less money than the inflated OEM item and available in different thickness options too.

Suggestion
As for 19" they are certainly great visually, but if your roads are anywhere near as bad as ours in Mtl you may regret it, unless you don't mind having bent wheels repaired every so often.

Suggestion
The Sport Technos are super-strong but that didn't keep me from having two bent ones which had to be repaired so that I could get a smooth balancing done.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As title says, I am looking for winter rims for my fathers C4S.
Car currently has the 18 turbo twist with summers (40% left on rear, 65% on front).
Options:
1. I have found a one-season used set of 17" winter rims (Porsche OEM) with Pirelli winters, mounted and balanced for $1700, but will need rear spacers so the car doesn't look silly (I've been told, about $290 for bolts and spacers)
2. 18" Porsche Techno wheels for $1500 - would likely use those for the summer and wount 18" winter tires on the turbo twist.
3. 19" 997 Turbo wheels $2800 (new, never driven on) - would then need summer tires for the 19's and get 18 winters and put em on the turbo twist wheels.
4. 18" Sport Edition rims and winter tires from Tirerack - I don't think any spacers are required - cost would be around $2400 delivered to my door.
- So, any feedback on these prices? (Canadian dollars btw) They seem pretty good, but not entirely sure.
- Also, how much rougher is the ride on 19's vs 18's? For me, I wouldn't worry, but for my father, it may start to get a little more harsh...
- The 17's may perform a little better than 18's - but not as crazy about the look, or having to put spacers on - but the cheapest option and are original Porsche rims...
Opinions / comments welcome!
Keep in mind that the 996 was never engineered to wear 19" wheels and some say that it can put additional stress on suspension components and the front differential. Now having said that, many people have them on with no adverse effect. Ride will be harsher on 19" vs 18" with the stock suspension.
I use 2 sets of OE turbo twists (one set is hollow from a TT and lighter: used in summer). I picked up the TT hollow spokes for $1200 CAD (with tires at 40%) locally from a PCA member. +1 on the 19's in fact 17's for winter would be my choice........
if you have time do some shopping...... I sold a complete set (NB twists w/ blizzaks 90% tread) for $500 and we were both happy.........
I personally use Option 2 with my C4S, although I also have a 3rd set of 997 18" OEM wheels which I rotate in as well.
You could check the Mart on on the pca.org site (but must be a PCA member, about $45-50/yr) as the Sport Technos pop up every now & then. Or there's the 6speedonline forum and eBay for comparison pricing. I was considering a set of Sport Technos before I opted for the 997 wheels, and if I remember $1500 would be kinda high (?) However if they are local that counts for a lot since shipping is extra $$.
As for 19" they are certainly great visually, but if your roads are anywhere near as bad as ours in Mtl you may regret it, unless you don't mind having bent wheels repaired every so often. The Sport Technos are super-strong but that didn't keep me from having two bent ones which had to be repaired so that I could get a smooth balancing done. And the wider the wheel, the more you notice vibration etc. Like pongobaz noted, the ride will be that much harsher. The C4S/TT suspension is already pretty unforgiving on less-than-nice pavement, so combine that with stiffer tire sidewalls and you get the picture.
Thanks for the info!
I'm leaning towards the Sport technos - they are local which is nice!
Did you need spacers on the techno wheels to fill out the C4S properly?
And if you decide on an option which requires spacers/bolts, I would recommend FVD Brombacher: good-quality stuff that's less money than the inflated OEM item and available in different thickness options too. Those guys know their sh-t.
My Technos were a factory option and included spacers.
Provided the Technos are 18x11 ET63 (marked next to valve) the proper OEM spacers are 17mm, which I think is only a couple mm narrower than how the regular Turbo Twists sit in the rear.
Fronts are 18x8 ET 50 same as Twists so nothing extra required.
I did exactly the same. Picked up 4 tt hollow twists from US and paid $1,200 Cdn all in. Used for the summer. I use the solid twists for winter. All are 18". I wouldn't be interested in 19" wheels. Harsh ride and tires are more expensive.
Most say that if you live in a snowy wintery area, go with the smaller rims (not 19) and tires, so that there is less tire on the road. However in the C4S you have to be concerned about front and rear brake clearance, beause of the Red Brembos are larger than the black OEMs. I say that you stay with the turbotwists 18" and get smaller snow tires for winter.
Yeah, the 19's I found would be for the summer - but they are too $$$$ (especially since I'd still have to get tires for em!)
But I'll stick with 178's for the summer for sure.
I may have a line on a set of 18's for the winter - cheaper than the 17's I found (and no need for spacers or anything).
I'd look at stock rim size and lean toward smaller the better since I have rocked cars out of ditches, done spins of hwy's, curb hopped, and the usual other clipping of slush ice blocks on the hwy. Now I don't even dodge large rain drops
I have the OEM recommended winter size and offset Sport Techno style wheels and tires for winter on my C4S. They are 18x8 up front and 18x10 in the back. It performs very well. I don't use any spacers, and I think it looks fine. The rear wheel wells aren't quite as "filled out" as they are with the 18x11 summer wheels, but they look fine.
I ended up picking up a set of Hankook W300's and put themon the turbo twists (8 front, 11 rear) with 275's in the back.
A lot less drone driving compared to the Pirellis (which are getting fairly well worn now).
I'll now probably start looking for summer rims (hollow turbo twists likely).
Hi all,
My apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I had a query relevant to the topic. I purchased a set of 17" Sport Edition Cup 4s off a bloke on kijiji last year and did not actually mount them on my car until a few weeks ago. The rims
just barely
clear my calipers; perhaps with 1mm to spare.
In light of the following thread on 6speed, my question is: "Is a clearance of 1mm between the rims and calipers ample or is this a recipe for disaster?"

Thanks in advance for your input.
PS: I thought I might add that my car is a 2004 C4S.
