Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Funny you say that as it was the first thing I did notice.
Leading evidence: 'first thing i did notice' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'first thing i did notice' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). 0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I ordered this from Abebooks.com and it arrived today. Less than $65 delivered to Japan. Didn't realize it was about 1.5 inches thick A4 size. Massive amount of great info.
Highly recommend to any 996 owner.

Yup. Great reference... Though Streather blames IMS problems exclusively on owners poor maintenance habits. The book was written before we knew what we now know.
Funny you say that as it was the first thing I did notice. He could be half right which may account for the difficultly in identifying the repeatable cause.
I did learn my variocam+ has another iteration of the ims design which I didn't know before but didn't really research.
Seems to be lots of good detail on many things aimed at the home mechanic.
The 996 Carrera Buyer's Guide by Rodney Nagar is basic but useful. And free.
I can't get the link to work, but put this into Google and you will easily find it as a free download:
"996 Carrera Buyer's Guide by Rodney Nagar"
(if you spell his name properly, "Naghar" the search doesn't find it)
Edit: I just searched... can't find "996 the Essential Companion" for anywhere near $65. Anyone want to sell me their copy?
I saw that copy, but it was an additional $27 shipping. Looks like a great book. I shall put it on my Xmas list. (Hint, hint for all of you that want to get me gifts).
Shortly after acquiring my copy of The 996: An Essential Companion, I corresponded with Adrian Streather on a related matter. He was gracious enough to reply, and he added that there will be no 997 or any other future versions.
Too bad as these pub's. are worth their weight in gold.
