Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'cat' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cat' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check carefully' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Get some used mufflers and install them yourself, but only AFTER you do the PSE MK II mod.

Suggestion
I've replaced two, and I know two other people in Charlotte who've also had to replace both.

Suggestion
So, the mallet test can work as Hans suggested but I would want to pull off that muffler (cold) and shake it a bit to confirm before heading off to look for a replacement.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My car is at the dealer for a 45K service and the tech called me that I have a rattle in my driver's side muffler and that it is due to a loose baffle in the muffler? My car still has the P-CPO but he stated that this wouldn't be covered. Basically I would need a new muffle rand it would cost me about $785.
Did anybody have the same issue and can you confirm if a CPO should or shouldn't cover. Thanks.
mufflers are specifically excluded in my CPO contract (from last year)
Don't bother paying 800 bucks for a new muffler, just buy one or a set from someone here or search ebay, and either mount yourself or let a local muffler shop mount it. I think worst case you'd be looking at a couple of hundred bucks
Slightly OT, but what do people here think about the supersprint mufflers? I am a huge fan of their products, but all I ever see here are fabspeed or junk like that.
I may be totally wrong, but from what I remember supersprint mufflers were marketed as TechArt or another more bling make for the 996, which may be why you don't hear about them as much. I do remember a buddy had a set of bypasses he bought from them directly, seemed to be fine.
The mufflers direct from supersprint are about 700 bucks a side, and they do want like 300 bucks a side for tips, which is a little nuts!
Dutchie,
I agree with what Han said. Get some used mufflers and install them yourself, but only AFTER you do the PSE MK II mod.
Or, better yet, do the PSE MK II mod to your current mufflers and re-install them. Cost $80 to $100 and you won't care if the rattle a little.
hopefully they pulled the muffler and shook it to confirm the source of the noise. Lot's of stuff that can cause a rattle back there...
No baffles in the cats, just the cells which can make noise if they crack (sounds a little different though):
You can take a rubber mallet and hit each muffler while the engine is off. If there's a baffle loose, it'll rattle from inside. Assuming one of them is good, you will clearly hear a difference between good and bad.
If neither muffler rattles during the mallet "test", then it's probably not a big deal. If the rattle is coming from a bracket or mounting hardware, you should be able to hear that as well.
Do you notice a rattle when driving?
If the muffler is shot, then you will generally hear the rattling all the time. If it doesn't rattle until it's warmed up a bit, it has a higher chance of being one of the catalytic converters.
So, the mallet test can work as Hans suggested but I would want to pull off that muffler (cold) and shake it a bit to confirm before heading off to look for a replacement. As I said, there are various possbile causes of a rattle in that area (less w/o PSE).
Ask the shop how they arrived at their conclusion. That should help in making a decision.
Doesn't it seem like a lot of people have cat problems with the 996? I've replaced two, and I know two other people in Charlotte who've also had to replace both. Now, all of these cars have been tracked so maybe that's part of it, but it was never an issue with my '87 and I've never heard complaints from 964/993 owners.
Kind of on-topic I hope . . .Is a cat rattle audible only when you hit a bump or is it kind of all the time. I have a metalic noise from the rear over certain bumps, but could be lots of things . . .
