I removed the old one using dental floss, and cleaned off the residue using 3M Adhesive Remover, then Meguiar's Body Scrub, then Menzerna Final Polish II.

I used blue painter's tape to tape the tip down firmly to the deck lid overnight.

I measured everything, then used small bits of blue painters tape to locate the badge.

I recently had the urge to replace the black Carrera logo on my lapis blue 2001 C2 with a silver one (as on Carrera 4's).

So, I removed the silver logo, went back to the dealer and bought another one (yes, they wouldn't just give me a new one to replace the defective one).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The new silver logo went on fine and straight, but the top of the "C" stuck out a bit from the body and just wouldn't stay stuck.
So, I removed the silver logo, went back to the dealer and bought another one (yes, they wouldn't just give me a new one to replace the defective one).
I repeated the above process, this time making sure the top of the "C" adhered before I pressed the bottom of the "C" into place. Everything is nice and straight, but this time, the middle of the "C" is bulging out a bit. Not terribly so, but it's not on completely flush like the rest of the logo.
Anyone else encounter this issue? It seems the silver logo is thicker than the black one, and therefore a bit less flexible. So, it's harder to get it to follow the contours of the deck lid, which isn't completely straight.
Any suggestions?
Oggie - Your thread is very timely for me. I just yesterday, when I saw my car in the parking lot at work, I thought I really need to replace the black Carrera logo with a silver one. Coincidentally, I also have a Lapis Blue over Grey Leather 996 C2, but mine is an '04. Don't have a solution for your problem but do have a couple of Q's. What the logo cost? How does the silver logo look on the car, do you like it? Can you post a pic?
We stock the silver logos (and any other color you want).
In many cases, the glue is spotty on the backing, and that caused the problem referenced above.
There is a thin emblem tape that is used in cases like this. Wurth makes one, as does 3M. You do NOT want the foam tape. If you can get by an auto supply house, see if they carry the thin stuff. It has an orange backing paper, is about 1/4" in width, and is very thin. Peel off what you need, apply it to the back of the emblem, and press down.
You may even be able to slide a tiny piece of it under the loose spot and do the trick. If not, remove the logo again, then apply the tape to the entire back lettering before remounting.
Done!
Email me with questions or if you need any logos in any particular finish. We have most in stock.

Oggie, I got an OEM Carrera logo (I am not sure if there are replica aftermarket logos) and I didn't have any problems with the adhesive. It may have helped that I applied pressure for about 30 seconds after I put it on (the adhesive on the back was a bit "spongy" so I wanted to make sure it stuck).
gota911, I bought my silver Carrera logo from PerformanceProducts.com for around $25. We have the same dark blue metallic paint and as you can see from the picture the silver logo makes a big difference.
Leave the package in the sun for a bit, It does seem to make the emblem a little more pliable and the adhesive a little stickier. Most dealers and shops have them for about $20,
Programmatore - Thanks a bunch for the info, and especially the pics! I think it really looks kick-a** GREAT! I'm going to do it, too.
Oh, Oh! This is how it starts, isn't it? First a couple of cosmetic changes, then a few "minor" mechanical upgrades, then finally you are hooked, and end up calling MA (MODS Anonymous) for help, but by then... ITS TOO LATE!!!
You're welcome. Just remember that the Carrera logo position is different for 2000 cars (if you just place the silver Carrera logo where the original black one is on your car you'll be fine). Also, you can't put on the silver Carrera logo without also putting on a silver hood crest. It is just not done.
Oh yeah. That's how the addiction starts. First you get $25 clear sidemarkers, then a $25 Carrera logo, then an $80 hood crest -- before you know it you're spending thousands of dollars on an aerokit! And those are just the cosmetic mods -- the performance mods can get even more expensive! What's the number for MODS Anonymous again?
Thanks for the replies guys. I do like the look of the silver logo much better. I should have done this sooner. I looked at the car again from the side, and the problem occurs because the spot where the logo is mounted (at least on 1999-2001's) is quite convex vertically, but the silver logo doesn't bend much vertically. It's actually quite stiff compared to the black one. And, the foam on the back is very thin, so it doesn't do much to fill in the gaps. I believe on 2002-2004's the logo is mounted lower, on a flatter part of the engine lid, so this convexity issue should not be a problem.
Eric, when you paint the logos, do you start out with the thinner black one or with a silver one? Maybe the solution is to have you paint a black one arctic silver.
I guess I can experiment with the first silver logo I bought (and then had to remove) to see if it's more pliable after leaving it in the sun or heating it with a dryer.
Ocean Blue '99. I placed it lower on the lid, as on the '02 & later models. I had the same problem you speak of with the tip of the C. I used blue painter's tape to tape the tip down firmly to the deck lid overnight. Seemed to do the trick.
goto911, Don't call MA. They tell you they will help you with your affliction but what they really want is to feed on you weakness. I contacted these guys through this forum, asking for help and all they told me was that would be cool or show us pictures or if you did that you could also do this. They would show me others who did mods to entice me to do the same and it worked. THESE GUYS ARE GOOD--REAL GOOD
DOn't go to these guys unless you wantto spend a bunch of moolah and have the coolest 911 in your neighborhood. Well, I gota go now I'm shopping for suspension parts!
I'M SICK DAMMIT!
Kevin, since you put the new logo in a different spot than the old one, how did you align it? Did you apply a piece of masking tape along the bottom edge of where the new logo would be placed? How did you get the left-right alignment correct?
Oggie,
I measured everything, then used small bits of blue painters tape to locate the badge.
Dell,
I had noticed that '02 & later cars had the badge located on the lower surface. This seems, to my eye, to be the more correct spot for the badge.
mundman - mundman - Thanks for the heads up. You may have given me a way OUT! I already have the "coolest 911 in the neighborhood!"
Maybe I'm safe!
Unless
one of THEM figures out that I have the ONLY 911 in the neighborhood, and if they do, then I'll be inundated with pic after pic of the latest and coolest MODs known to Porsche-kind!
Yea, you're right... I'M DOOMED!
Glad you got the mod bug Oggie. If nothing else you really should change the hood badge to silver.
Later I'm sure you will think of something else!
Any plans for the Cape this year?
Don
Don, I've had the mod bug for 4 years now (since the day I bought the car). I've been thinking about this particular mod for 4 years, and I finally decided to do it. I think this is my last mod though -- I can't think of anything else to change. Of course, I could change the gold hood badge to silver, but then, that would mean I'd have to change my gold 928-style wheel crests to silver also. Oh no, here we go again -- I guess the day you're done with your mods is the day you sell the car!
Going to Cape Father's Day weekend again(new tradition). You think we can hook up at the Hyannis Main Street car show? That was a lot of fun last year.
