I found a DIY on opening the panel, but nothing specific on replacing the window cables or the window regulator.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys ... Something really weird happened the other night. I stopped by the bar and wanted to raise my driver side window which was fully lowered till this point. The window crept up a bit (1/2" inch) and then gently stopped - like it was going to give up the ghost any moment. I went through several up/down button presses, hoping this doesn't ruin my night. After several slow window movements, it suddenly worked and then closed the entire window height in one noisy, crunchy movement. The sounds were similar to pulling on a steel cable in tension or when a steel cable/wire in tension snaps over/across something. Its sounded quite weird ... Since then my driver side window always makes very mechanical sounds when lowering it or raising it (in fact I've stopped operating the window since). The sounds are the same as before i.e. metal cable twisting under tension. Do the symptoms point towards something?

POST 2Original post

Interesting - mine has been doing that for about 6 months now...I got used to it, but would love to hear if there is a quick fix! Thanks for posting.

POST 3Original post

Your window regulator is failing. It is called the Bowden cable system and that is why you hear a cable popping sound. It cost me about $225 dollars from Pelican Parts and it took me about 2 hours to replace. If you want to DIY, I believe someone has a DIY but I don't.

POST 4Original post

+1 It's the window regulator. Sunset Imports has them for $165 (just did mine a month ago). There are DIY's, and Cory's right on about the 2 hrs (at least for the first time, don't ask). The door membrane is a pain - and do not forget to remove the upper stop (the regulator has two hard stops, you have to remove the upper stop for a 996).

POST 5Original post

+1 It is the regulator cable failing. It will sound very crunchy up until it just stops woking.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll check out the cables. I searched for the DIY here as well as on renntech.org ... I couldn't find it. I found a DIY on opening the panel, but nothing specific on replacing the window cables or the window regulator. Any ideas if I should be searching for some other words or if you guys already know the link ... would appreciate it. Cheers Sid

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone? Please PM or reply here is you have the DIY. I honestly can't find it and I gotta squeeze this repair soon (before I royally screw things up). Thanks in advance guys ...

POST 8Original post

This is the one I used/ It is for a boxster but it works for a 996. There are a few details missing like the clamping torque for the windows but otherwise quite complete. http://www.bombaydigital.com/boxster/projects/window/

POST 9Original post

Stephem, that's the one I was thinking of but couldn't find it.
