Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

47 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought my high mileage 996 a year and a half ago hoping more than anything that the engine would fail, because of all I have read on this board. My local Indy has more than one crated 997 355 hp engines that he would love to unload, which would fit in my '02 C4S no problem. What could be better than having the best looking 911 of all time, with the optional turbo aerokit no less, and and brand new 355 hp engine?? Unfortunately, and to my great dismay, despite redlining it everyday, hitting triple digit speeds everyday (that is, 12.0 mph for the fuzz) the engine Just Won't Fail. You may ask, why not just replace the engine anyway? The answer is, the xx chromosome humanoid I happen to be married to. Faced with the prospect of losing my precious significant other-other, she would surely let me fix it (and make it better!!). But as long as it keeps on singing strong as ever... no. Even with well over 80k miles. Why, oh why do I have such bad luck? For the love of God, WHY . [I am the first significant other, aka, wife of dresler, and legal owner of this pretty little car. I like it. I like the color, and I like to drive it, because I'm 5'1" and it fits me like a glove. Most automobiles are not considered good financial investments. (Have you people every heard of expensive toys???) I would prefer diamonds. They retain their value, and do not blow up, and last forever. So far, my car has been a fine one. I'm sure this little silver automobile won't last forever (as jewels would), but why stress about what will or will not be? Engine failure? Any old car can fail. If you like your Porsche, and it makes you happy, have fun and enjoy the ride. All of you (including my significant other) need to think about other things. After all is said and done, it's only a dumb car.] I really had nothing to do with the above bracketed post. -dresler P.S. I tried to get her to pose for the calendar, but she would have nothing to do with it. I think she would give Ms. September a run for her money......

POST 2Original post

Ha ha ha ha Interesting relate Looks funny You have a nice car, with a very good engine. Enjoy it

[QUOTE= P.S. I tried to get her to pose for the calendar, but she would have nothing to do with it. I think she would give Ms. September a run for her money......[/QUOTE] As our good cyber friend Tim would say, this thread is worthless without pics!

POST 4Original post

Too funny. My wife gave me a ton of grief when I announced I "Needed" a new exhaust system. She pointed out that the car was under warranty, so go see the dealer. I patiently explained that the stock system was fine, just not loud enough. She still doesn't get it. My wife would give Miss September a run for her money, too. Maybe we need to start a "The Wife/GF doesn't Know We took These Pics" calendar.

POST 6Original post

3 of the 7 Porsches I have owned over the years have been sold to ensure domestic tranquility. The wife was angry at me about something and selling the Porsche was the compromise that smoothed things over. I will never forget the wife standing behind the guy who sold me my first 1970 911T Targa back in 1972. She stood there with baby in arms and kept saying, sell it. Little did I know that years later I would face the same situation.

POST 7Original post

+1 I am having the same problem as the thought of upgrading to a 3.6 X51 engine is very tempting.

POST 8Original post

Funny and true indeed... I am afraid that your engine will keep going strong just to annoy you, that's life, what you ever want will never get, but what not, will get instead, Oops, tough man Anywhow enjoy your beautiful car in good health. Cheers,

I've never been that wrong.

Quotes source post: 5934271

Wow, my wife would never make me sell something that she knows makes me so happy. I considered selling my 86 last year and she told me no way, you will regret it! she was of course correct. The woman has incredible patience for my car addictions. she rocks!

Post some pics.... or we will be forced to tell your wife how much money you spend in mods and tires!

POST 12Original post

Your intention is to ruin your engine, so you can spend 5, 6, 8 to 10K on something that will give you 35hp more....... Am I missing something??

POST 13Original post

I had been thininking the same thing, but thinking X51 upgrade...unfortunately, I think these MKII engines are actually reliable and not likely to grenade. Tough luck for us

POST 14Original post

I love it! I agree with Tim - we need some photos!

POST 15Original post

next time forget to put oil in the car. I'm pretty sure that'll work

POST 16Original post

I am going to ask my wife to pose.... she's no miss America, but to me she is. I wonder if I get get her to be a bit racey.... this could be fun (and take a while since I will have to spend a lot of time encouraging her) E

You bought the wrong year - should have gone for a pre facelift 3.4 engine - better chance of terminal failure.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 5934467

Because it is cheaper than upgrading to a 40th anniversary?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source posts: 5934470, 5934743

You guys could buy my 40th anniversary car and save yourself a lot of the trouble. Go ahead and start a bidding war.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 5935001

Thanks but no thanks. Homework/research is done so it will not be a lot of trouble. I already have the mods I want in my car. Dream car for me is MK1 GT3. However, MK1 aero body with a 3.6 X51 will give me comparable MK1 GT3 performance since MK1 GT3s were never made road legal in the US. 996s are too plain out of the box compared to other generations. The only other car I will consider is a white 996 MK2 GT3.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

She just won't cooperate on the picture thing. Maybe if I bought her that stupid jewelry....

POST 23Original post

Mine wont die either, would love to put the new mkII 997S engine in, but I don't have an excuse to do it.

and don't tell me you had to pay for it.....

POST 27Original post

Look at the car in his siganture... he paid for it.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 5935579

No, I didn't. She beat herself up pretty badly over this. In fact, she did such a good job on that part that I didn't need to help her... much. I matched her down payment ($1,200) and she is making payments. I do have to give her positive credit because she insisted that she should make the monthly payments. The only help she asked for was to negotiate the price, since she has never bought a car before. I did this long distance. I live in Dallas and she is going to college in Charlotte.

She sounds like a star!

POST 31Original post

Maybe I missed it, but why do you need to ruin your engine in order to replace it? Tell your wife you can sell your current engine since its still running and recoup some of the cost. Grenaded engine, not worth so much Currently operational engine, worth more.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 5936802

This is a "tongue in cheek" thread.

POST 33Original post

I am sorry that you are having such rotten luck. I am sure that if you would have bought a 3.4 car your luck would have been much better. Best of luck!

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5937276

Well, I guess someone had to say it eventually!!!

POST 35Original post

I didn't want to state the obvious - I figured most of us got the sense of humor and knew what you were saying.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 5937947

Yeah, when the second guy asked a serious question about why you want it to fail, I thought it was time to clarify! Maybe they hang out on the 997 Forum too much and have gotten too serious!

POST 39Original post

I might have a solution to your "problem" See I would like your old motor, and you would like a new motor... how about I "steal" your motor... then you can tell your wife that your car doesnt go withoout a motor and the 3.6 is the only replacement Porsche offers... You HAVE to get it...

POST 40Original post

You're primary problem is that you're wife "thinks" she owns the car. As soon as you convince her that women aren't "allowed" to drive porsches - problem solved.
