I had my transmission replaced a few thousand miles ago, and am now wondering whether it was simply a matter of my linkage being out of adjustment (I had trouble getting into 2nd, with an occasional pop-out).

What's scary is they replaced your transmission the delivered you a car that had the linkage adjustment that far out of whack.

IMHO a reasonble premium over the B&M piece just in case I run into any warranty issues w/the tranny.

This is an $8 tool you can buy from your dealer that snaps onto the shifter mechanism to check/adjust the cables.

Suggestion
All it does is hold the shifter in the dead center position, might be easier to disconnect the cables, get it into dead center of the gate, then duct tape it there and adjust your cables, otherwise you have to re-install the stock one-adjust it- and put the ssk back in.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yet another "finally installed the SSK" threads. However, I think I'm one of the first I've heard of whos shift linkage was significantly out of adjustment.
first, the SSK. Install was pretty easy. I R&R'd it again tonight because I forgot to lube up the plastic "buckets" and the total R&R was well under an hour. Really easy DIY. The shift effort is up a bit, but it's so much more direct and I love the shorter throws. It feels very beefy and mechanical now (rifle bolt). All in all, big thumbs up.
Now, a quick note about the shifter adjustment tool. This is an $8 tool you can buy from your dealer that snaps onto the shifter mechanism to check/adjust the cables. Mine wasy *way* out of adjustment. It was easily corrected using the tool. For those considering doing an SSK, I'd highly recomment snapping on the adjustment tool first just for safety's sake.
Also, for those of you having any sort of shifting issues, I'd recommend trying this tool. It can't hurt, and could possibly help you avoid tranny trouble down the road. I had my transmission replaced a few thousand miles ago, and am now wondering whether it was simply a matter of my linkage being out of adjustment (I had trouble getting into 2nd, with an occasional pop-out). The dealer said the cables were "never" the culprit, and refused to check it with the tool; I guess they would rather have the shop time associated with a tranny replacement...
anyhow, love the mod. Glad I went Porsche SSK since it was only $350 through Brandywine. IMHO a reasonble premium over the B&M piece just in case I run into any warranty issues w/the tranny. It never hurts to use factory parts when possible.
Here's a thread with another pic from Toolpants:
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...topic=3424&hl=
When I clipped the tool onto the shift lever it wasn't even close to being able to snap into the "console". It was way off.
I unhooked the shift cables from shifter, moved the lever so that the tool would snap down onto the console, and then reattached the cables. The car shifts into 2nd much more reliably now, and feels like it's getting better as I drive it more. I'm pretty upset that the dealer didn't check this before replacing my tranny...
Wondered why yours was so off. I have used it on about 10 cars and only 1 was a bit off. On that 1 car the owner had a shop put in the EVO short shift, which I took out to put in the B&M. The EVO unit uses the OEM shift lever so I was able to use the tool before disconnecting the cables.
Did not know you had a replacement transmission. Maybe you should donate the tool to your dealer and show them how to use it.
It could be that the tranny replacement caused the misalignment -- I'll never know. What makes me suspicious, though, is that the shift action into 2nd gear didn't really improve as a result of having the tranny replaced. True, I haven't had it pop out of 2nd gear since the replacement, but the feel going into 2nd really sucks. The linkage adjustment (and the short-shifter install) appears to have helped more than the tranny replacement.
Yes, maybe I should donate the tool to the dealer
What's scary is they replaced your transmission the delivered you a car that had the linkage adjustment that far out of whack. That would **** me off and make me suspicious as well.
Don't know definitively. All I know is:
1) the tool is pretty darn precise. there isn't any wiggle room in the adjustment, and
2) Porsche is adamant that you don't unhook the cabling when you install their SSK (they want you to disconnect at the shifter), so they seem pretty **** about preserving the precise alignment...
After installing my B&M SSK I notice a tad bit of difficulty getting into 2nd gear till warm. No popping out, etc., just difficult and feels wierd going into 2nd like it's just barely engaging.
Not sure if that is characteristic or in need of an adjustment.
Dell, that's gonna be a little bit of a PIA if you already have a SSK installed. The tool only fits the OEM non SSK shifter. All it does is hold the shifter in the dead center position, might be easier to disconnect the cables, get it into dead center of the gate, then duct tape it there and adjust your cables, otherwise you have to re-install the stock one-adjust it- and put the ssk back in.
