If you have a note on the car, the insurance company may make the check payable to you and the noteholder which means that they usually wont sign off on it until they see that the repairs have been done.

If you choose to skip the frame repair, first ask who the insurance company is going to issue the check to, again, if its just to your name, then the money is yours...go to vegas but if the check is to you and the note holder and you dont have the frame fixed, well, they wont sign off on the check.

Make sure you ask to have ALL parts that they are replacing given back to you...that way you make sure that they actually put all new pieces in.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Some a-hole rear-ended me on my way to work.
The first body shop is quoting $8k to fix the alignment, suspension, etc.
Anyone know of a good body shop in Pasadena, CA
Does this "Devalue" the car? If so does anyone have the link to that company that gives the Devalued estimates? Did that make any sense? I saw it on another post somewhere but can't seem to find it now.
good idea to include that in the damage report for insurance. I would also like to know since I found out this morning that my baby has 2 hits on the carfax (I didnt check before buyuing)... if the devalue is enough, I can sell my car for a moped
I will be watching,
PS - MAN that sucks!! I feel really sorry about that and hope for a speedy and acceptable recovery for you!!!
E
Is that 8k before or after they have taken the car apart. As said earlier, since the engine is in the rear, there could be much more damage once the car has been 'torn down'
Make sure you ask to have ALL parts that they are replacing given back to you...that way you make sure that they actually put all new pieces in. Good luck...let me know if you have any questions...
I like Marco's Auto Body...they're expensive, but do a good job. The one in Monterey Park seems to be better than the Pasadena one (IMO).
As said before, make sure you get a complete tear down before a final quote--there could be much more damage than is immediately apparent--who knows, it may be totalled. Anytime suspension is involved, it's a bit scary.
With regards to the devaluation...do a search for diminished value, there are a few threads and tons of sites devoted to this issue. Definitely press your insurance company for this.
Too bad...that really sucks! Hope it all works out, sounds like good advice to start with a tear down, then take a second look at a more 'accurate' estimate. GL
Malakas,
The speed was about 30MPH from the SUV that caused the accident. He hit a jetta and the jetta hit me. I was moving slightly at the time and cosmetically there was little to no damage.
Thanks man.
CFP,
That's $8 grand after the teardown. They claim the frame is slighly tweaked and toe and camber are off.
$340 in parts and ALL the rest is labor to straighten the frame etc.
My question is...Can I just used the money to put in a Moton adjustable suspension, align it, and call it a day?
Wow...what is their hourly rate for pulling frames? I mean at 200 an hour, that is almost 40 hours and that would lead me to believe their is a lot of damage.
Do you own the car outright or have a note on it? If you own the car outright, the insurance company will cash you out with a check and you are free to do what you wish with it. Just keep in mind that if they cash you out and the shop you take it to finds further damage, it can be a royal pain in the *** to get a supplement for the hidden damage. If you have a note on the car, the insurance company may make the check payable to you and the noteholder which means that they usually wont sign off on it until they see that the repairs have been done.
For whatever shop you choose, I would get the names of people that have had a similar repair and speak with them to see how good or bad of an experience they had with that respective shop.
CFP,
Their rate on the frame labor is $55/hr and they are quoting 8 hours.
39.7 hours for "mechanical labor" @ 135/hr is the biggest chunk.
Then body and paint 32 hours @ $48/hr.
I have a note on the car, but currently am dealing with the other parties insurer. I can go thru mine at any time, but why waste their money.
Ok, 8 hours is not bad at all. Make sure they give you a lifetime warranty that is transferable if and when you sell it, on all work done. If the other insurance company is being nice to you, then you should be fine but if they start jerking you around, I would contact your insurance company just to give them a heads up on what is going on.
Just remember that every insurance company wants to pay for repairs as cheap as possible so do not let them steer you to a shop they tell you to go to and do not accept the car when is completed until you are 110% satisfied.
CFP,
I think the tweak on the frame is minor if any.
What is your take on just leaving the frame alone and putting the money towards an upgraded, fully adjustable suspension?
First off, I would fix any and all frame damage, regardless of how minor it is...if you dont fix the frame, you may never be able to fully align the car not to mention that it hurts the structural integrity of your car and if you get in another major hit, serious physical and cosmetic damage may occur.
If you choose to skip the frame repair, first ask who the insurance company is going to issue the check to, again, if its just to your name, then the money is yours...go to vegas but if the check is to you and the note holder and you dont have the frame fixed, well, they wont sign off on the check.
i didn't have time to take any pics today when i went to see it.
With the body panels on there is about an 8mm gap on the Right center reflector and about a 3mm step off in height from the driver's door to the rear quarter panel. Other than that, the bumper has a scrape and the Left bumperette is scratched.
sorry for disclaimers:
not a lawyer not legal advice
but as per information I have seen, diminished value claims in California meet with limited success due to the state's permission of diminished value exclusions by insurers. review a copy of your current insurance contract and search for a "diminished value exclusion" clause or an amendment / addendum (often called "sneak amendments" since the insurers may sneak them in when you renew your policy every 6 months or year)
Most current policies written in CA specifically carve out diminished value claims. In the event that you are covered, great, but if you're excluded you're SOL. You may however find a way to claim the diminished value on your taxes, however, this is not tax advice not a CPA consult a CPA etc
HTNY,
Excellent advice!
I am looking at this site
www.ican200.com
as a possibility for my Diminished Value Appraisal. It is about $200, but I figure if i have an actual document from a third party it will increase my chances with both the insurer and taxes (if needed).
Since I am not at fault and the other guy has admitted responsibility, I will submitt my claim to his insurer. Although I expect resistance, hopefully this circumvents any exclusions.
Currently it looks as if the frame is slightly bent, and that fact alone means it would be difficult to sell this car in the future.
Thanks!
I would NOT go to your insurance. You have a lot more right's as a claimant on the other insurance. On your's you only have the insurance you bought or were sold but the company has to make whole.
Len,
I'm with you on this one.
I suppose at first, I really thought they would buff the bumper and my car would come back in a day or two. Wishful thinking I guess.
The guy admitted fault up front, and so far they have been cooperative.
However, I would not hesitate to pull in my insurance company at any moment if I need to. With Frame damage I'm sure my company has a vested interest in making them fix this if they balk.
In the meantime, why waste my company's money? (I have military insurance and they are really good to us. They even pay us dividends back at the end of the year).
And so far you are right. My rental car limit is $30/day. Right now I'm driving a rented Cayenne S and his insurance is begrudgingly picking up the tab.
The next step is to see what happens with the $8k bill.
After that I will hit them with the Diminished Value Claim.

Jon,
Can't seem to load a pic right now, but u would laugh.
One scratch to the Right Bumperette and a few subtle panels that don't quite line up if u look close. Everything still latches.
If you didn't know the car was hit u probably wouldn't even notice. But after they did an alignment there was about a 7 degree difference between the L and R sides, and they couldn't get the car aligned.
That equals frame tweak which needs the dealer to pull both the engine and transmission in order to put it on the frame jig and fix it. (At least that's what I'm told by the body shop, D/C Autocraft.

Yes...totally addicting. That's awful. Knowing that she's twisted up a bit must be tough, would drive me nuts too, so I feel for ya. On the other hand, it's a hunk of metal. You are lucky you didn't get hurt on that type of collision.
J
Oh it's in it's final few plays of the game. I'm following the ican plan to a tee. Should have the car and the cash in about a week. I'll let u know how it all works out.
