play it safe and buy her some flowers for no reason, I find it helps to give her something to look at while I am in the garage cleaning off the rain drops

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Proud first-time owner of the dream car from my youth...Picked up an '01 Cabriolet precisely four weeks ago and have enjoyed every minute of owning it... I catch myself going into the garage at odd hours cooing "oooh shiny..." While it's an absolute rush to drive, I find myself perfectly satisfied keeping it in the garage and rubbing it with a soft cloth (microfiber of course) and marveling at the simple beauty of it. And of course... the added pride of being the only real gem in the parking lot at work, among the more pedestrian Z4s and SLs (seems like every fourth person has a beemer or a benz around here, although there are a couple of 'Vettes and caddies...)
Anyway happy to be part of the P-car community - the price of admission was worth every nickel...
Thank you all for a hearty welcome! I've been lurking around here until I could take a suitable photo for my avatar but along the way I managed to take a couple of decent extra photos. They're the best I can do for a guy without a lick of artistic talent and no photographic eye whatsoever. Here are a few of my new baby...

Welcome to Rennlist and congrats to a very nice and clean 996 Mk1 Cab!
Be aware that this place is dangerous. There's a high risk of getting addicted and mod the hell out of your car.
Of course you need clear side markers! Then, a lower suspension; a nice exhaust but of course the exhaust just sounds right when you get headers and an intake. Chip tuning will compensate for the loss of low end torque and gives you a better throttle response and then there's the plenum! On the inside you just have to have a short shifter and gauge rings as well as nice pedals. Btw, do you have a 3 spoke steering wheel?
Just kidding! Enjoy the fulfillment of your dream! I still do every minute I drive her and it's almost 3 years! Its not a car its a Porsche 911!
Rudy, Welcome to Rennlist and Congrats of getting the P-car!
< Tim whispers so everyone but Rudy can hear > Damn Newbies! They are posting pics before I can give them crap about not posting pics! What good is having Newbies if I can't yell at 'em???? < Tim stops whispering >
BTW Rudy, thanks for posting the pics!
Welcome!!
Nice looking car... has your wife asked why you keep going to the garage yet? Tell her it's normal and may not go away!!!
The wait was worth it.... go drive it
Ed
Congrats!!! Welcome to the best 996 forum in the universe!!!
I'm receiving a pumpkin alert! While many will advise you on mods to make, I would def. swap out your orange side markers for the smoked markers....literally a 2 minute upgrade, and cost about 30 bucks...you can get them cheapest at.....hmmmmmm, I forgot, but someone will chime in. I know Eric at
www.bumperplugs.com
. has them as well.
Good luck....drive safe, and enjoy that gorgeous new sled of yours,
J
Wow, thanks! I really do appreciate the welcome and congrats from everyone.
I agree that this is the best site (for me) JBRipps. When the wife greenlighted the purchase I did my usual online research and read through the PCA site. Overwhelming with all the "super-enthusiasts" over there, guys with not only multiple sets of tires for whatever condition, but guys that had multiple p-cars (for whatever condition). If my wife ever caught wind of the discussion expounding the benefits of spending $400/tire annually this purchase would have been a non-starter. But they did mention Rennlist and that's how I got here... From my perspective, this site is perfect for me, filled with "guys-down-the-street-driving-the-car-you-always-wanted" with practical ownership insights and experiences. Pumpkin alert acknowledged... (kinda breaks up the whole color scheme...)
Ivangene - she did catch me a couple of times, but she's a smart lady - urging me to organize the rest of the garage (which I've successfully procrastinated for about three years) to be "p-car safe"... it worked. And is working.
HWK72 - noted! My wife, commenting about all of the "customizing" I read about and wanted to do noted that it was a little like her "playing Barbies" as a kid... I told her, yes, but I'm only interested in accessorizing the car (when I asked her if I could get the "twenty-something California Blond" option to really dress up the car, she slugged me...) Anyway, I needed the warning about three weeks ago... I'm already hooked on this place.
PongoBaz - I'm glad to see there was still plenty of room in the boat and that no one minded moving over!
911 911 GP - 50K and change miles on it...
Thanks again everyone!!!
funny how we all seem to get slugged on that one ! play it safe and buy her some flowers for no reason, I find it helps to give her something to look at while I am in the garage cleaning off the rain drops
It's hard to beat silver. She looks great. Enjoy her...
You should have known better with the blond comment, save that one for your next "boys meeting" at Hooters...
Beautiful Cab man!
You'll have to join us for the next Palomar MTN run.
Now you can NEVER go back! You are ruined for all other cars.
Porsche, NO SUBSTITUTE!!
Congrats on the new ride, looks sweet.
It's really too bad us San Diegans are now getting LA-ish traffic. P-Cars aren't meant to be stuck in traffic at 3:30, lol. Well, at least we have nice driving weather 365 days of the year, so go out & drive that beauty with the top down.
Thanks Phil!
Someday.... maybe.
I wish my wife could support me in the manner in which I would like to become accustomed!
On a teacher's salary???? Yeah, THAT'S going to happen! Damn, I am glad she doesn't read Rennlist. I would be in BIG trouble, numerous times!
one of my teachers had a 911. 2004, he was a teacher for like 10 years or something. he drove the most POS until the 911 but still when he got it, i got to drive it..., and of course he had the biggest smile.
don't worry everyone drives a honda one time in their life, it does stand for Had One Never Drove it Again, for a reason. as much as they are decent cars. i dont tend to like em
I know that I wouldn't have like ANY car if it wasn't a P-car. But since I got a Honda, it is the thing I can bash to my heart's content, which is almost as much fun as bashing Newbies!
Congratulations! I would agree FINALEE is right. When I first got my P car some people would jokingly say “midlife crisis” but I tell them the real crisis is I couldn’t have a Porsche 25 years ago when I first fell in love with them.
GL and let the mods begin.
Hopefully this isn't kicking a dead horse - just came back to review the thread to find a vendor for the bumperplugs and side markers...
Jugger - thanks! You're right, Hooters would have been a better place, but I have this irrational desire to probe the depths of my wife's sense of humor... I think she's run out of some, the pole I used when we first got married is wayyy too long.
MedTech - I'll be on the lookout for that Palomar Mountain run... I've only done it a couple of times, but driving up that road in my truck even made me sick a couple of times... hopefully the exhilaration of driving in a car made for that drive will be distracting enough to not get carsick... And yes, ruined for other cars a long time ago... by a high school PE teacher no less... we all guessed that she was the trophy wife of a man of means... which is why she drove that nifty mid-70s Targa (912?) to school... the shape of her car (or maybe it was her) was enough for me... (I guess that pegs my wait [and age] by about 30 years...)
Raphael - I dodge the LAish traffic by going to work really early and leaving really early... hopefully no one thinks less of me, but rush hour traffic is the reason I got tiptronic... While I was in shopping mode, one dealer offered a car I thought I wanted, but when I went to look, it was manual... one of the other salesmen told the guy that was helping me for me to "man-up" and get this car... but admitted to the guy that was helping me that he wasn't interested in telling me to my face... (I'm sort of linebackerish, and really interested in finding some wider seats than the stock ones - anyone have any ideas?)
Thanks again to all for the welcome and congrats!
Congrats on your new P-car. Beautiful example.
I had wanted one since 1964 (I was 12), when the first 911s came along. FINALLY scraped enough to buy a 996 earlier this year. Owning a Porsche is a milestone of sorts, but as I continually have to remind my friends: You don't have to be a millionaire to drive a Porsche. You just have to prioritize.
As for the wife, doesn't she have some hobbies of her own she can busy herself with so as to get off your back???? Jeeeeeezzzzz......
Ghost - Your "finally" pretty much describes mine and yes a milestone... my wife and I were watching a TV show (I don't remember which), but the discussion was infidelity - something to the effect of at such and such an age, you either go with the twenty-something or the sports car... I picked the sports car figuring it would be a lot cheaper (from experience - she's wife #3... it think I would have had a p-car much earlier in life if I were a little better at picking women when I was younger...)
Yes she does have other hobbies, but bless her heart, she always makes time for me (to hassle)...

That is awesome!
have you seen this video...

its an old commercial for Porsche and sums it up pretty well for me. Some people think you are rich... I bet their piece of crap (insert Jap car name here)was more money than my P-Car. This is NOT a mid life crisis, it is a life long obsession!
