Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I thought the reason porsche used 911 is that 901 was used by owned (registered) by Peugot.

Maybe that's why Cadillac is changed their naming to alphanumerics.

I know insider chassis designations are still used for development purposes, but why lose the 9xx designations?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Instead of numerical model designation. Why do you suppose that's happening? I know insider chassis designations are still used for development purposes, but why lose the 9xx designations? Especially with other manufacturers actually moving away from names (Acura, Cadillacs, etc.).
I'd be curious as well. I have to spend the better part of 1/2 hour explaining to a friend how my car is a 911. He asked "I thought you had a carrera, not a 911" when he saw the "911" badge on the rear.
Intel had this problem a few years ago with the 286, 386, and 486. The problem they had were those numbers were a reflection on the architecture of the chip, and therefore could not be copyrighted. It would be analogous to Porsche trying to copyright "Flat 6"... they wouldn't be able to do it.

Okay, I don't know how to do the quote thing in my message so here goes: Riad said," I would also bet it's much easier to market a name. I'm sure the Marketing department had a lot of input into that decision."
I would think that from a global perspective, numbers would be easier to market. Not everyone can pronounce cars like Murcielago. Maybe that's why Cadillac is changed their naming to alphanumerics.
In the lower right hand side of the post there are little quote marks, just click on them.
And you're right. However, your thinking is flawed because you are applying logic and reasoning and I'm referring to marketing.
Thanks, now I'm cooking with gas! You absolutely have a point on the marketing thing. I mean, what's up with this Ronald MacDonold guy? The clown thing is so 1970's.
Carrera became the designation for the street 911 with the introduction of the 200 hp 3.2 liter motor in 1984. The SC from '78-'83 stood for Super Carrera. Before that Carrera was reserved for super performance versions only.
