This is not a probability of success.

Recently, it developed a whining noise from the engine and on investigation we were told originally that it was a faulty head gasket but when it went in for repair they decided that it needed a new engine - which Porsche happily paid for without quibbling - even though the warranty was expired.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Unfortunately this posting is about my wife's 996 - it's my turn to have the family car! It's a C4 with approx 40,000miles on it and is only 3 1/2 years old. Recently, it developed a whining noise from the engine and on investigation we were told originally that it was a faulty head gasket but when it went in for repair they decided that it needed a new engine - which Porsche happily paid for without quibbling - even though the warranty was expired. I was suspicious but have been too busy to get to see the dealer myself - but eventually persuaded the missus that it was worth asking what was wrong. The answer "a cracked cylinder liner". I have had a good look through this forum and found no reference to the problem - so can anyone tell me why this occurs, is it a common fault - is it related to the RMS failures I have read so much about? I'd also be interested to know what Porsche's attitude has been to other people who may have suffered this failure? The good news is that our experience hasn't spoilt our enjoyment of a truly amazing car!

POST 2Original post

Cracked cylinder liner REQUIRES engine replacement. You're lucky if Porsche paid after the warranty was expired. But at 3 1/2 years...How was the warranty expired? BTW - It has nothing to do with RMS. You hear alot about RMS,but I've seen an inordinate amount of cracked cylinders & head gasket failures which both require engine replacement. Seems RMS if more widely talked about...but far less lethal.

POST 3Original post

I believe the 4yr/50k warranty only applies to us cars.

POST 4Original post

An RMS failure would not cause a cracked cylinder liner. I'm not sure a failed RMS would cause anything except a messy garage floor. Some have suggested the a RMS leak could ruin the clutch but I doubt it and have never seen anyone in 5 years who could show that any oil ever got on the clutch. A cracked cylinder lining was probably due to a material defect in the lining or severe detonation knock. You didn't run diesel fuel did you ?

POST 6Original post

As standard only 2 years in Britain. Although we can extend that at considerable cost. Shane
