The switch can be installed but it is costly from what I have been told.
Leading evidence: 'Install but it is costly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check options list' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Anyway, a few questions: 1) The dealer told me the previous owner installed the OEM sport exhaust.

So now I know who bought it, and YES you do have a short shifter installed on your P-car.

I already checked the options list under the hood, and obviously this doesn't help if it was installed after purchase.

I was thinking it was the oil pump running oil from the dry sump for about 30-seconds???
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The exhaust has a cutout that comes on after a certain speed to quiet it down and then reverts back to normal after a higher limit speed is reached.
Okay, the obligatory "yah-hoooo!" thread. I finally got my dream car. Was at the BMW lot looking at M3's, and for the last few months have been having trouble finding the exact one I wanted. Strolled next door to the Porsche lot, (Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte), where a 2002 Speed Yellow 911 Carerra 4S with the CPO warranty and only 11k miles sat, yelling at me to buy it. . .which I did. Zero buyers remorse. . . Nice step up from my FX35, although it does remind me of my previous '02 S2000, also a little bit my old '94 MR2.
Anyway, a few questions: 1) The dealer told me the previous owner installed the OEM sport exhaust. Is there a way to tell for sure, other than the great sound of it? Can the on/off switch for the exhaust be retrofitted? Same question with the short shifter kit. Any way to tell whether or not it has this? I already checked the options list under the hood, and obviously this doesn't help if it was installed after purchase.
Thanks for all help. . .

The sound is a dead giveaway as to the presence of a sport exhaust. Look under the car to see if it is a PSE. The switch can be installed but it is costly from what I have been told. I have Fabspeed myself. As far as short shift kit or not. Does the shifter click into gear or does it glide(longer throw)into gear. You can pull the boot up from the front(it will just pull up) and see if it is a stock shifter or not if it is an in car unit. B&M will be blue and PSSK will be black. Look under the car to see id it is an in tunnel ssk or stock. BTW-we want pics and congrats on a great car--You have only just begun!!!
Enicideme:
I don't know about the OEM sport exhaust, but I can tell you for CERTAIN that your car DOES have a short shifter installed in it.!
You bought your 4S last Wednesday or Thursday, didn't you?
I took my '04 996 to Hendrick Porsche on Tuesday of last week (4/6). I was talking to one of the salesmen and I told him I was going to put a short shifter in my car on Saturday, (which I did) but I had no idea what a SS felt like. He told me that the Speed Yellow 4S had a short shifter in it and asked me if I wanted to test how it shifted, which I did. I could tell right away that it was MUCH shorter than my stock shifter. When I went back to pick up my car on Thursday, the 4S was gone. So now I know who bought it, and YES you do have a short shifter installed on your P-car.
I live in Concord, NC. I have only had my '04 996 for five weeks, so this is new to me also. Maybe we could meet some time if you are interested.
I miight suggest looking at the service records if you have them. If not you can ak the service dept. to pull them up if it was a customer of theirs. The switch for the exhaust can be installed later if you want it. The exhaust has a cutout that comes on after a certain speed to quiet it down and then reverts back to normal after a higher limit speed is reached. It is speed driven. The short shifter is definitely short and tight. If it has it and your shift throws areabout 3" from 1-2, your in. There are also mods for the exhaust to have it on all the time
Yup, bought it a few days ago at Hendrick. I figured it probably had the sport exhaust, there is a clear point where at certain times you can hear it open and close. At idle, it gives it just enough of a rough idle to make me grin.
Congrats on the purchase. I posted this car on the boards a few days after it showed up at Hendrick, and knew it would not be there long.
Very nice. Hope to see you around town.
Email me for local special deals (painted bumperettes are in order).
I just bought a 99 Speed Yellow. At first I was a little nervous about buying a yellow car but I don't regret it one bit. Everytime I go into the garage and see the yellow I know I made the right decision.
The RUF wheels was one of the selling points for me buying the car. The car did not have a lot of options but that is what I wanted.
I showed my wife the Good Bye Kitty and she was disturbed but I loved it. I just give my dog the Hello Kitty's when my wife is not around.
For a new guy question. When I start up the car I here a noise coming from the rear of the car. I was thinking it was the oil pump running oil from the dry sump for about 30-seconds???
Also for another question, My car has a subwoofer put inside the spare tire and I was wondering if this was a Porshe option or aftermarket. It looks too good to be aftermarket and the original sticker says there was an upgraded stereo option. There are also two amplifiers but I haven't dug into that yet. The sub is blown a little anyway.
i think the subwoofer is a porsche part that was added on after the fact (i thought the subwoofer was only on 02 models and up). the noise from the rear (sounds like a fan purring to life right?) is perfectly normal and like you said is probably just some kind of oiling system. personally, i don't drive off unill the system clicks off and even then, not hard untill the engine temp reaches optimal level.
From the pictures you posted it doesn't look like it has PSE. I think that if it had PSE, that it would have polished stainless steel exhaust tips. Am I right about that guys? It's a great car though!
Those are the stock SS/polished tips, the PSE on a C4S would utilize those. Just look under the car, if there is a bypass pipe btwn the inlet and outlet on the muffler, it is indeed a PSE. Don't bother with the switch, it's a waste of time and money.
Hey Jeremy, nice car!
"When I start up the car I here a noise coming from the rear of the car";
I asked a similiar question a while ago and got the following answer from Loren over at RennTech;
"What you likely hear when you start the engine is the secondary air injection pump (sounds like a Hoover to me). That air pump only runs when the air/fuel mixture needs it to meet emissions. Usually that is at startup when the engine is cold and when the engine comes back to idle - like at a stoplight after exiting a freeway."
