Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been stuck a few times trying to get into reverse. It has always gone in with a little patience, but today was the first time i needed to get some help. Just so happens that a guy walks up says he has a 40th, and asks about mine. He ended up pushing me back out of a parking spot. It is going in friday for a RMS and probably a new clutch. Also going to have the 60K done minus the oil and filters which i already did. I have posted before about a whining/bearing noise from the tranny/clutch and am wondering if this is a sign of bad clutch and/or tranny. Car is still CPO until 08. Thanks for any thoughts.

POST 2Original post

Your plastic shift linkage and rubber insert might be worn or broken....

POST 3Original post

Having a similar problem, thus this visit here today. Heard a popping/clicking when shifting from 2nd to 3rd last night, then felt a little more play than usual in the shifter. Car shifted forward no problem. Pulled into a parking spot, head in, and found when I left the store that I couldn't back out. The shifter, no matter how hard I pushed left, and up, still engaged in first only, never reverse. ANy ideas?

POST 4Original post

As Vividracing stated, it could be that your plastic shift linkage and rubber insert might be worn or broken....

POST 5Original post

Sounds like you need to get back to the gym and pump some iron. If you want serious answers see above ^^^^

POST 6Original post

(I hate gyms, btw.) Thanks all. For some reason (my idiocy is possibly the culprit) I didn't see the second post beforeI posted. Hopefully, thus, not a big deal to get fixed cost/time-wise? Thanks again.

I used to have this problem. So I started shifting 2-1 then R. Seems to free up the linkage a bit. Haven't had a problem getting into R since. -td

If it is the plastic linkage socket, it will probably 1.0 to 1.5 hours to fix as a DIY. You will have to remove the rear center console, and replace the linkage. Here are the instructions to install a B&M short shifter. See post #21 for the potential problem. http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/67.pdf Check out this thread on renntech.org which shows a few aftermarket replacements for the shift link. You may have to register (free) to be able to see the pics. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...=0&#entry11426 Let us know if you have any additional questions. Keep us posted on what the cause of the problem was and how you fixed it. Hope this helps.

POST 9Original post

It's officially the linkage. Apparently the factory (plastic) part isn't even available (indefinitely on back order I was told, twice). That said, I'd go with the Evo unit (I'm not sure I want to shorten the throw with the B&M and the EVO seems closer to stock, whch I'm more comfy with), but here's the question: is the Evo part interchangeable? i.e. can it be used on either? I know there's a blue and a black, and the blue is the one that's shot, but is there a difference?

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
