Besides, if the stock was good enough, why did they change the cup cars intake (measured)...

I'm sure your comparable Traqmate data come from the same day where you switched the wings back and forth (otherwise the conditions are not the same) and you had a neutral professional driver as you were surely influenced by emotions with the new toy-wing which might have changed your driving style.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
Ill be doing quite a bit of work to my car over the next few weeks and was wondering what the best intake for the 996 3.6 is. I have done the MKII mod but other than that its stock with exception of a LFW and new clutch that will be done.
Looking for best inprovement in sound and power, id take sound over power however.
Thanks
AC
Plug off the silencer box.

The plug produces a noticeable increase in sound from the intake, deeper, throatier and louder. One of the best upgrade for just a buck or two you can do. I didn't have an orange cap so I made my own
I have done a modification that cost virtually nothing, and that gives (nearly?) the same sound and power increase as Evo and K&N. I have removed the air box silencer (the one that sits inside the box with the T-piece of the rubber hose connected to it), and blinded the T-piece off. Then I have removed the plastic strainer that sits before the steel mesh strainer in front of the MAF. All this sits in the top half of the air intake box. Then I took the lower box out, and drilled 30x1/2" holes on the surface facing back. This area getrs pretty cold during driving, and you will not suck in hot air from the engine. The total air suction area is increased by 30%, and at the same time restrictions in the airbox are much lower. I have used a K&N filter cartridge in the original box (same shape and size as the original, but much lower pressure drop). Pressure drop over the filter is basically proportionall with the filter area (sq.in.), and the original filter size is bigger than the kone shaped Evo and K&N. The sound at WOT is GT3 like, and throttle resonse feels better. I don't know if HP or performance is better, but it can certainly not hurt. And the air box looks 100% original from the outside, and people are wondering why my car sounds soooooo much better than all the other ones. Now you know...
Not nothing. I enjoy the way it sounds. Combined with the exhaust and the SSK, it puts a tiny bit of 'edge' back into the sensory experience. The sound is pleasing, and I can hear what the car is doing. This both helps and rewards shifting well and keeps me engaged when I'm going fast. To me, this is value. I don't think I got any more useful power out of the mods, but I think I got my money's worth.
In 2002, they gave a Nobel in Economics to a guy who proved that value is subjective. All the excuse I needed!
They gave a nobel for that crap? I have been lecturing on that for years in my intro course covering perception and the subjective experience. They must have had a shortage of nominee's that year
Nope, that would be a behaviorist. I am not. However, I am a scientist that relies on empirical evidence to support any claim made. Empiricism at it's very heart is OBJECTIVE observation. Funny thing is that subjective experience is the very reason the first decade of existence on the discipline of Psychology was quickly shifted to the whole "if you can't see it to measure it, then it doesn't exist" dogma of the Behaviorist theories according to Watson. FYI....that way of thinking finally went by the wayside in the late 50's.
Actually it is an OBJECTIVE measure of time differential based on Traqmate data comparing segments of the course where the added downforce could be measured.
But, yes, on the SUBJECTIVE side it brings me great happiness everytime I see that beautiful work of carbon fiber art fixed to the *** of my 3.
I regret to inform you that business schools are churning out behaviorists by the buttload. The children of Skinner are alive and well and in the junk mail business. If I have to share a boardroom with one more Wharton grad turning cartwheels over a 0.02% response delta, I might shoot myself.
Fortunately for me, empiricisim is an incomplete way to understand the world. I teach my classes that it has value for its accountability, but our way of life is codependent with the marketing of goods, and marketing depends on two things empiricism can't supply: ideas, and glorious, glorious subjectivity. If value was entirely objective and measurable, everyone on this board would be driving a Corvette.
Anybody know who makes the best dialectical triad for an '00 C2?
Probably one of the reasons the college of social science ditched economics back in the day. Stupid move if you ask me. For crying out loud, we still teach behaviorism today but disguise it as classical and operant conditioning. Where is it used most? Behavior modification!
While I agree with you that there ARE behaviorists in the world, the paradigm shift in the late 50's brought in SUBJECTIVITY as well so those people that actually label themselves as behaviorist are few and far between.
I think we are on two different pages right now.
The CAI for the car gives a GREAT value to those that measure in subjective emotion.
However, for the "performance" gains people think are there are actually NOT based on empirical data.
So, like I said, if it brings you great happiness, buy it. But if it is "performance" you are after, you are SOL.
I know. It's all in good fun. Ask me how many times I get to engage in academic banter? Not often, so I welcome any discussion.
By the way, was you degree in sadism?
I agree, whatever your talking about... not sure really, but I kinda like the tone of it.
Im a measurement (instrumentation) and controls engineer and I can honestly say that measurement and control is just as much as an art than a science. Ultimtely, the human aspect of data is what maters.
Like dell, if he believes he can go faster with his rs wing, he will go faster. I also notice that he got brand new Nitto's... maybe that helped to. You can measure all you want, but in the end, the human spirit has the most influence. Its the same with CAI, sound that it makes can communicate and can make you drive faster.... How many times have we heard that its the driver or the photgrapher or the fiddler... the true driver, photographer, golfer knows what really is important. Thats why the CAI is prob the most popular mod of all times (human factor). Besides, if the stock was good enough, why did they change the cup cars intake (measured)...
I agree, though Dell is obviously correct. I just don't draw such a hard objective line when it comes to these things. I skied better when I bought a helmet. My duathlon times improved when I got a lighter bike. I had better luck with women when I wore new underpants.
What makes you happy makes you confident, and that can make you better all by itself.
Touche'
Uh, maybe b/c it's a completely different motor and purpose?
By the way, I never said I believe I was faster, I KNOW that I am faster. As for the wing. I ran it BEFORE the Nitto's on street tires and then went to the Nitto's. I was able to compare runs with/without wing at the same track on the different compounds. Better times through downforce specific sectors.
Totally concur. Perfect example is my shop did an alignment on my car before a track event several months back. I thought he said -2.5F -2.0R when he really said -1.5F and -1.0R. I ran some of my best times ever (actually turned my fastest lap at VIR--2:11). So the subjective perception is HUGE in the equation.
Aha, very interesting! I'm sure your comparable Traqmate data come from the same day where you switched the wings back and forth (otherwise the conditions are not the same) and you had a neutral professional driver as you were surely influenced by emotions with the new toy-wing which might have changed your driving style. Someone could argue that the Traqmate data are on the same pseudo scientific level as the dyno graphs from the CAI manufacturers that show increased hp and torque.
However, the wing looks good; the CAI sounds nice and we're all a happy family!
Actually you couldn't be more incorrect. The TM data is unbiased as it measured specific objective parameters based on physics (speed, accel, decel, lat g's, distance, etc.) in a real situation where as those "dyno's" do nothing more than simulate by artificial means.
I realize you are having fun with this so I am not offended whatsoever, just thought you might appreciate a more scientific explanation than Ah-ha!
1000% agree!!!!
I was talking gt3 stock intake and gt3 cup intake. With a freer exhaust and air filter they manage to gain 10hp (Porshe 911 story, by Paul Frere). Unless you think that your gt3 arent made with the same purpose as the cups.
Porsche arent only the ones that know exhaust and filters.
Dell, cmon most proffesionals on any level requires skills just as much as luck. How do you know that isnt want because you stayed at Holiday Inn the night before
... just messin with ya, its all good.
You know, come to think of it, I did stay at a Holiday Inn the night before. CRAP!!! There goes my empirical theory
FYI...the cup has LESS horsepower than the street GT3. It does help thought that it weighs roughly 600# less though!
