No disrespect to the urethane film products that are available for protecting the surfaces of cars, but the cons that everyone has pointed*out are all very valid, and were enough to dissuade me from using the 3M material except in selected areas on the car, mostly in the trailing edges of the wheel wells.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Those four bra threads provided me with a wealth of information. I know a lot of you went to great lengths to insure your responses were accurate and helpful. I really would like to thank Tim for leading the parade. Its people like Tim that are the glue in keeping individuals together to work as a team. One more thank you for another untold hero.John D you can forget about something under the tree this year. In all seriousness I really did enjoy all the humor..now should I get a bra or not.

POST 2Original post

If it's for you it would be a bro ...in all seriousness...it is up to you...there are pros and cons...it seems very divided positions. I have them on every car I have except my turbo. I have not found one that does not have an orange peel like look and I would rather re-paint the hood every third year than have the bra on it all of the time...And the bugs that get on the bra from my SUV look like sh*t all of the time and do not come off (I suppose the paint underneath is perfect). why don't you do a poll ..

POST 5Original post

Mike - thanks for noticing my very small attempt to help answer your question by including all of the additional "useful information." It really was fun! I do not have a bra on my car. I do, however, have the usual mini stone chips on the bumper cover. If you plan on keeping the car a while, I would strongly consider the clear bra. It seems like a lot of the guys on the 997 Forum have chosen to *** the clear bra. I recall that you mentioned in one of your bra threads, I think it was in volume #4, (hee hee) that your last seven cars had clear bras on them. In your own mind, was it worth it to have a bra on those cars? Is the 40th going to be your daily driver? Is it worth the $700 - $1,000 you will spend on a bra to avoid the stone chips? If the answer to those questions is yes, then get a clear bra. If not, then don't get one and just resign yourself to the fact that you will see stone chips on the car further "down the road." If stone chips will bother you over a period of time, then get the bra. Now, make a final decision and once you have decided, bra or no bra, post some @#%^&* pics of your car as penance for having 5 "bra" threads! Mike, you knew that was coming, right?

POST 6Original post

You will get stone chips and indentations on these cars if you put enough miles on them. A clear bra is a reasonable way to limit the damage. I don't have one on my cars, but if you feel the need go for it.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is really funny.....my next threads will be.......what color car should I buy.........do you like this interior..........what do you think of these wheels.......does a white car draw more police than a Lapis Blue one......I wont have to make a decision ever again

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's not going to be a daily driver, to many remarks from work to do that. I'm going to put the 3-M bra on after all why change now.

POST 9Original post

No disrespect to the urethane film products that are available for protecting the surfaces of cars, but the cons that everyone has pointed*out are all very valid, and were enough to dissuade me from using the 3M material except in selected areas on the car, mostly in the trailing edges of the wheel wells. For the best protection of a car surface, there is no substitute for an actual bra that is removable. Not only does it take the hits of road debris very well, but it also will protect the front radiator inlets from accumulating road debris. I have had a Speed Lingerie Bra on my 996 for over 5 years, and have had excellent results. I have had no problems with the bra chaffing the paint, and it still looks as good as the first day I put it on. The major downside of a removable bra is that if the car gets wet like from driving in the rain, the bra should be removed to dry. This is not a problem in my area of California as it only rains 2 months of the year, but in the backwoods of the rest of the US it may be a problem. Pricing is about the same as a 3M installation, but it keeps the car looking much better than with the Urethane films.

POST 10Original post

I like your point O.E. I may have to look into one of those myself

POST 11Original post

that strap on bra looks absolutely horrible. i don't understand what all the controversy is around the clear bras. it's a no brainer unless you're ultra obsessive about the appearance of your paint with the lines and the wax etc etc. at that poitn u need to spend more money on therapy than worrying about some stupid car paint. if you want to avoid chips and have peace of mind, get the bra. if u dont' care about chips and want to save that extra $1K or so, then don't get it. let me add that it's not just stone chips that it saves u from. if a car bumps into yoours or some object touches it, there's a greater chance that the naked paint will scuff than the tough 3m material. i remember when this truck slide up on my front bumper in one of my other cars and the 3m film got scuffed but the paint underneath was totally fine. just rub that scuff out and i was good. back when i got my first car (s2000), i ran it for about 10K miles without a clear bra. chips all over. so then once i resprayed it at a reputable body shop and applied the clear bra, no chips after another 10K miles. little to none. can u see that there's a plastic wrap over it? yea, but doesn't detract at all from the overall appearance of the car.

POST 12Original post

I have the clear bra on my C4S, but I wont get it again... save the money and have the bumper repainted if it gets bad.

POST 13Original post

Personally do not have a bra, do have chips! Personal opinion, I wont buy one because I plan on adding aero this year, otherwise???? Still probably wont buy one!

POST 14Original post

i think we have one tooo many threads for this....... now stop

POST 15Original post

I had mine done in 02 and took it off 2 weeks ago. It's a daily driver with 73k highway miles mostly and I thought then it would be a good investment. It looked very good for a few years (silver meridian color) but the edges were starting to peel a little and I am getting ready to sell or return to lease company. It was very difficult to remove, or better said, it was very difficult to clean-up, easy to remove. But a lot of the glue stayed back on the paint and that was a 3 hour job that broke my back. let the pro's take it off too. But it did save my bumper from bumper rash. It did not save it from the bigger stones, which do go thru and chip the paint. So, no rash, but 3-4 chips from larger stones over the years. The front looks almost brand new but the key word is almost. If you are a perfectionist, my bumber would need a respray anyways because of these larger chips. Only 3-4 chips compared to perhaps 100-200 little ones that would be there if no protection was there. I don't know if I would do it again. But compared to my old M3 (which had no protection and almost the same highway mileage when traded) which I had prior to the 911, it does look 95% better. The clear bra will not save the bumber from everything, especially if driven a lot on the highway (and at the speeds that I drive). If yours is a weekend car, don't do it. Daily driver, highway, probably do it. There, my 2 cents!

Gary - now for the real test. Do the nipples show through the bra when it gets wet?

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

oohhhhh waiting for the answer

POST 18Original post

Actually, yes they do! And I have Eric over at Bumper Plugs to thanks for that. The Speed Lingerie bra is very tight, and those little plugs do pop, especially when cold! You can see the right one in the picture above!

Can you add nipple rings? ...I like those and they add an extra 5hp.

POST 21Original post

Ive never got the bra thing. In the UK you will never see one of these. Whats wrong with a few chips ? Wont you see these on the clear bra too (dents or nicks??) The clear bra can look all yellow and kind of ugly from day one. The rock chips will show up slowly. Or you can get the same effect as the strap on bra and save money by re-painting your own bumper with a brush and can of paint from Home Depot :-).... doesnt look too sleek really

POST 22Original post

I never want to read any Porsche related post with the words "strap on", "bra", and "Home Depot". Actaully I don't want to read any post where those words appear together.
