Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All, My 2002 C4S is in for the 30k service right now. The previous owner had bottomed out the car and damaged the "engine carrier" as the dealer is calling it (i think it's like an engine mount plate). The plate hit the water pump and took a chunk out. There is no leaking or anything from the water pump, but the dealer is suggesting I replace it as a precaution. He said that eventually something can happen with the bearing in the water pump that will cause it to fail due to this damage. They want $1600 total to replace the water pump and engine carrier. Does this sound like a real issue or should i just replace the engine mount and not worry about the water pump? To me, I don't see how a chunk out of the water pump can cause something to go wrong down the road. It seems like the water pump either works or it doesn't, but I'm not sure so I'm asking you guys! Thanks in advance for any help... josh

POST 2Original post

IF the current water pump goes south and your car overheats dramatically, you could be lloking at getting a new engine at a cost of about $13K +. Remember that Fram Oil filter TV ad from a few years ago? "pay me now, or pay me later!"

POST 4Original post

I agree with Doug, post pics and we can make a better decision.

POST 5Original post

My water pump went out at 55k. I don't know what other folks' history with there longevity, but while I had it at the shop, I would strongly consider doing it. Unless of course, you want to DIY as there is a good step by step here or on renntech. A local porsche guy did mine. around $800, as I remember. Pump was around $350+/-.
