The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with the convertible top since the dealer replaced the headliner a few months ago (and then put the hardtop back on) and put these parts in the glove compartment.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was rummaging around in the glove compartment of my '02 cab and came across two oval pieces of plastic (designated left and right) with part no. 996 561 838 01. The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with the convertible top since the dealer replaced the headliner a few months ago (and then put the hardtop back on) and put these parts in the glove compartment. Anyone know what they are for? TIA.

POST 2Original post

Are they the plugs for the holes left when you remove the hardtop? Roy

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No. They're not round; they are of an oblong shape.

POST 4Original post

Could be the oval cover beside the headlight on/off switch. There's one on each side, useless unless you do something with them. I have my garage unit programmed into the driver's side unit with an LED and pushbutton.

POST 5Original post

Is it a dark clear plastic like that on the end of a TV remote control? I noticed that there are 2 OVAL pieces 1.5" x 0.75" this color on the left and right side on the cabin light console just above the rearview mirror on my cab. They pry off easily and one reveals electronics while the other looks like it has about 6 clear LED's arranged in a circle. I assume it's some sort of ambient light sensor for something in the car like the mirror or the soft top. I was poking around the car looking for a good place to put my GPS antenna (that area could be too small).

POST 6Original post

its for the interior motion detector for the car alarm. Bobby

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. But where is the interior motion detector? My body shop recently had to repair the driver's side door that got hit in a parking lot. Would they have removed it?

POST 8Original post

Its in the overhead console by the reading lights. They look like two false buttons but actually they hide the leds and sensors as mentioned above. I doubt they would have to have removed them if they are working on the door. Maybe there is something I am missing. Bobby
