Although I don't have a G meter, I ran those R compounds to their maximum grip (and beyond, heh-heh

Suggestion
So is oil starvation going to replace RMS as the number one issue for 996 owners that worry too much to worry about?

if G's where the only issue that contributed to the oil starvation then obviously mine wouldn't have done what it did, but since i was just driving normally for me anyways, and using OE tires, i still got oil starvation, so it does exist, and it doesn't have to be a certain amount of G's nor do you have to be running racing slicks

Suggestion
The supposed oil starvation issue, if it is even an issue, may (stress MAY) come about only if driven at exceedingly high G's while using racing slicks.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This brings up an old argument. The oil starvation kit was for the 3.4L engine. The 2002 996 is 3.6, and the argument is that the 3.6L does not need the oil starvation kit since it was improved over the 3.4L. The counter-argument is that the X51 upgrade includes an oil starvation kit. Whetehr the counter argument is true or not I don't know. I do know that I looked for an oil starvation kit several months ago for the 2002 3.6L engine, and found none available. That included Porsche motorsport.
well the 3.6 does appear suffer from the oil starvation, i just happened to notice this for myself when i took an extremely sharp corner and noticed my oil pressure fell all the way down to 0
What is really strange is that my 3.4l does not seem to suffer from this problem in the canyons. I drive my car extremely hard and have not ever seen a dip in pressure etc. I have been in a 3.6l c4s however and have seen it happen at the same or less g load-
Like I said, old arguments. I've tracked my car several times with R-compound racing tires. Although I don't have a G meter, I ran those R compounds to their maximum grip (and beyond, heh-heh
), eventually down to the cord. Not a hint of oil starvation. However, there was a video at another board of a DE where a 3.4L blew an engine. This was at the section of the track that had a loooong banked curve taken at high speed. Gossip was that it was due to oil starvation.
Arguments aside, anyone know for a fact whether or not there is an aftermarket oil startvation kit for the 3.6 simillar to what's available for the 3.4?
You're going to have to get the parts from an X 51 kit to up grade your oil system on the 3.6, if in fact PMSNA is no longer selling a kit. The kit is plainly visible on the picture of the X51 motor with Varioram-Plus that Porsche was advertising a few months ago in all the magazines. You can believe in oil starvation or not, but I personally wouldn't run racing slicks on any M96 engine without the kit, R compound tires are ok. You'll have to find someone with the PET catalog for the part numbers, maybe Loren can chime in.
If the 3.4 blowing the engine video was the one from TWS, I was there that day, it occurred on a high G/ high speed right hand turn, I never found out what exactly caused the failure. The oil starvation on 3.4 engines occurs on the 4-6 cam side during high G left hand turns, according to Porsche Motorsports, that's the side with the extra oil tube on the kit.
That BK kit looks interesting, anybody know the price?
One of the reasons I lust after the GT3. There was a GT3 with only several hundred miles on the clock that was run off the road and was on E-bay. Looked like the drivetrain was intact. It was the wrong time for me, though.
Doug, I don't think you can just buy the X51 parts to upgrade. The cylinder head would also have to be bored for the new piping. Too much hassle unless you plan to race. Anyways, I don't foresee the need for racing slicks. At my stage of the game, R compounds are plenty grippy. The 3.6L liter stock"dry sump" should serve me well until i get a true race car
. Hey, I can dream, can't I?
Palting, too bad you can't get the X51 parts, you're right it is a lot of hassle if you're not running slicks. At our (DE) level I don't think it is really necessary. But that BK kit does look interesting.....
Shouldn't this problem be easily documented? If the oil pressure truly dropped to zero, wouldn't that trigger a critical fault and turn on the oil light. Not only would this stay on long enough that there would be no question there was a problem, but could be read after the fact by the dealer.
ya i guess he was trying to say the 996 isn't the raw sports car that the GT3 and GT2 are, either way, even if i was in a honda id be driving the hell out of it
if you observe carefully, on tight turns on street tires, the oil pressure drops down to the '2' mark at relatively 'high' g-loads. I don't have even R compounds on my car for the fear that this is going to grenade my motor.
I've been told by my Porsche mechanic that all you really need to do is to make sure the oil is full (up to the maximum mark on the electronic oil level measurement and on the dipstick. It should present no problems with R compound tires, then.
Racing slicks on the other hand, I'd assume that you should have other problems like getting that welded in roll cage and the interior stripped out on the street car, right?
So is oil starvation going to replace RMS as the number one issue for 996 owners that worry too much to worry about?
Does anyone actually know someone that has had an engine problem caused by oil starvation? I've been on this board for years and I club race a 99 996 without the OS kit and I've yet to see or hear of anyone actually having a problem. If I recall correctly, the message from Porsche warned of sustained high g load left hand sweepers. For that reason they warned against tracking a 996 with racing slicks without the kit. If you've ever driven a car on a track with slicks you will know just how far removed it is from street driving or DE on R compounds.
BK is a good company but I think they've come up with a solution that doesn't have a problem.
Jim
We are all making too much of nothing, IMHO. At least for the 3.6L 996. The supposed oil starvation issue, if it is even an issue, may (stress MAY) come about only if driven at exceedingly high G's while using racing slicks. On the street or at the track with street tires or R compounds, the only way you will achieve those G's is if you hit a solid object while going sideways. Oil starvation is the last thing to worry about in that instance.
Here's a video I put together to illustrate the point. Sorry for the poor quality, but I don't have a dedicated video server so the file size has to be small:
TURNS
These were street tires, and I've gone and done generated more G's with R-compounds (sorry, don't have a video of those, yet). JimB certainly easily surpasses any G's by me with his 3.4L race car. Not a hint of oil starvation, no 0 oil pressure nor warning lights. Just a lot of fun. You guys be the judge. Think more G's can be generated on public roads?
if G's where the only issue that contributed to the oil starvation then obviously mine wouldn't have done what it did, but since i was just driving normally for me anyways, and using OE tires, i still got oil starvation, so it does exist, and it doesn't have to be a certain amount of G's nor do you have to be running racing slicks
NiveK,
It's the first time I've heard of oil starvation while driving normally. I'm pretty sure that it's not normal. Don't take this suggestion the wrong way, but if your dealer says it is normal, I'd get a second opinion from another dealer.
NineK,
Seeing your oil pressure gauge dip in a corner and oil starvation are two different things. My racing mechanic explained the starvation problem to me a couple of years ago. I won't try and repeat it because I'll get it wrong but it's a fairly complex problem having to do with circulation and foaming, yada, yada.
I would be very interested in why your gauge dips around a corner. Maybe it's a sensor thing and is common. I've never watched mine. Or, maybe it's a different problem. I'm pretty confident though that it's not the "oil starvation" issue that motorsports created the kit for.
Jim
ya i don't know why it does it either, but it can be duplicated, and when i mean normal driving im simply saying im not using slicks nor on a track, but i was certainly taking the corner hard enough it felt like one of my lungs went out the window
