Nobody else with a SB installed have reported coincidental coil issues.

The Indy was the same place that installed the reman.

I you want a referral PM me and I am happy to recommend a great indy that I use real close to you who does all the work that I don't want to do my self.

I am going to be bummed if it was the SB since it's the most bang for the buck 300 smackers that I ever spent on these cars.

Suggestion
Yes, I know but it accelerates the opening of the butterfly but probably does not modify the enrichment of the fueling to complement the faster butterfly opening nor does it accelerate the changing of the intake valve timing to accomdate the faster butterfly opening.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok - agreed to have the Indy replace all six coil packs. Got the car yesterday - drove it around the block today and it did the exact same thing - idling really rough at idle and nearly stopped while the CEL blinked.
Goosed it and it kept idling, drove it home no problem. I plugged my CEL reader in and it said "#3 cylinder misfire" LOL! I left the CEL alone - will talk to the Indy tomorrow. Any ideas short of getting a new Indy??? The Indy was the same place that installed the reman. ALSO: I plan to call Sunset tomorrow and inquire about whether or not coil packs come on 3.4L remans.
Oh crap! Sorry to hear about this! You do need to find a new indy!

Marlon, you are a sick man - funny? hardly!! .... I would be pissed!!!
Then again, I talk big but am a real wuss when it comes to really being mad
GL with the repair - again
Well, new indy is all I can really come up with. Problem might be from improperly installed coil pack or loose/bad plug. You can swap coil packs to see if symptom follows coil pack or stays put.
If it follows coil pack bad (new) coil pack.
If symptom stays put then spark plug? Or electrical wiring or connector that coil pack connects to bad.
Another possibility is the injector is plugged or bad. Swapping injectors might isolate problem to injector.
Supposedly a remanufacturered engine comes with new plugs and coil packs among other things.
It is rare but I have heard of at least one new/remanu'd engine having a problem and the engine has to be returned. One shop I read about had a heck of a fight with dealer that it ordered an engine from and after installing it found the engine was defective. Took some work to convince the dealer the engine bad and to take it back in exchange for another engine.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Marlon,
I live right next to you. I you want a referral PM me and I am happy to recommend a great indy that I use real close to you who does all the work that I don't want to do my self. A very above board indy who is reasonably priced and charges actual time vs book whenever it is in your favor.
He is an air cooled specialist but has plenty of M96 experience as he supports two instructors with those cars and we wear stuff out often.
I'd consider removing the Sprint Booster, clear the codes, and see if that changes anything. The dots might not seem connected, but this is the most recent thing you've changed, right?
Good idea - but I left the "#3 cylinder misfire" code in for the Indy to see it. Last time I cleared a code, the Indy could not get it to duplicate. I'll leave the SB in too for now. When I take it back to them, I might insist on looking at them to ensure they were all replaced. But then again, maybe the connection wasn;t snapped tightly enough on#3.
Wait, what Sprint Booster? I'd remove that thing right now and if 30 days haven't passed get your money back.
Why people hang this electronic snake oil stuff on these fine cars is beyond me. Probably get as much HP gain with plenty of decals.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Mac, the developer said it was not for more power, it was for quicker throttle movement with less gas pedal input. The same as the "sport" mode in an M3.
Marlon, have you checked the harness leading to the coil packs?
Great thought, but how would a faster revving engine hurt or damage the coils??? Nobody else with a SB installed have reported coincidental coil issues. And if future issues DO point to the SB, we could do a class action LS and end up with turbo 997's out of it
So the moral of the story is: get your SB NOW
Yes, I know but it accelerates the opening of the butterfly but probably does not modify the enrichment of the fueling to complement the faster butterfly opening nor does it accelerate the changing of the intake valve timing to accomdate the faster butterfly opening. As a result the engine sees a leaner mixture and a too lean mixture results in a misfire.
It makes sense that just one cylinder affected cause the cylinders do have slight variations in air flow that are masked by the choice of fueling/ignition mapping.
That the error code is a misfire yet results in no flashing CEL is also a bit odd cause generally a misfire results in unburned fuel reaching converters and putting them at risk as fuel is burned in converters.
Now it makes more sense. Remove the Sprint Booster. It ain't a bad coil pack connection.
To the OP: Buy your indy mechanic lunch and tell him you're sorry for ever doubting him.
Sincerely,
Macster.
There was a 'flashing CEL' though - sorry if I did not mention it. I'll yank the sb tonight and try it again. I am going to be bummed if it was the SB since it's the most bang for the buck 300 smackers that I ever spent on these cars. But I AM bummed that the Indy is telling me that the engine did not come with coils and that my warranty is for "internals" only - Porsche dealer is looking into it for me.
mar
I just confirmed... 100% that a reman engine comes fully dressed with new belts, new plugs and new coil packs. No reason that you should be paying for new coils, I would be asking for my money back right now...
Hopefully find out tonight - I'll yank the SB and run it thru the same profile as yesterday. On the reman - this is very bizarre, but should become crystal clear in the near future - right!
Oh yeah - sure...
Confirmed by good friend who just bought his 2nd reman motor and Taylor our mechanic who installed them.
Ask the question another way: "hello, I need a reman engine for my dead 996. Do I need to replace the plugs, coil packs and belts at the same time or does the new engine come with all of that already? "
I don't see how the SB could possibly cause a misfire, if it only does what it perports to do. If it did any of the things Mcmaster said, then flooring the pedal would do the same thing as well.
I'm too lazy to remove the SB tonight. The Indy is getting it tomorrow to look at #3 cylinder. Hopefully have good news to report when I hear from them tomorrow.
