New trans from Porsche is $11k, some rebuilds I've seen for $4-$5k, and I've seen "used" ones for $3-$5k.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking at a private party '01 C4 in perfect cosmetic shape, with 49k miles. The Porsche PPI I just had done said that there was a grind/clunk when downshifting from 3rd into 2nd. It's obviously the syncro, since if the rpms are up, it falls right into gear, but if the rpms drop, it does a little grind/clunk.
No issues upshifting.
I know these transmissions aren't the strongest in the world, but how bad does this sound to you guys? Will it fall apart tomorrow? Will it last a good long time if I don't downshift to brake? Price is really good if there were no issue, but this issue has me a little worried.
TIA!!
Yeah, I guess so. New trans from Porsche is $11k, some rebuilds I've seen for $4-$5k, and I've seen "used" ones for $3-$5k. If it's only the 2nd gear syncro, and maybe 2nd gear if it's been ground too much, parts total for that is about $600. Labor on top of that to pull, rebuild, stuff, is probably $1500 min (non-dealer). Hmmm...
I posted the entire PPI in another link (will have to go find it), but after talking with a bunch of Porsche folks and techs, the trans is the only issue that highly concerned me, so all in all not too bad. And, I just drove it again since staring this thread, and tried every combination of high/low engine speed with high/low ground speed, and I could never get it to happen. It might only be when cold?
I'll post later with picts and/or that link, but I decided to get the car! As to options and color, yes, it's everything I wanted (except full leather and a nav system). It's a 2001 C4, yellow, with an aero kit. I love it!
I had mine rebuilt and upgraded for the track (knurled synchros, billet pieces, etc.) for 11K. I'm sure you can have yours rebuilt for less than a new one from a Porsche Dealer.
I see you're in San Diego..... If you don't mind a short drive to have the work done contact Mark or Laura at

They'll take good care of you......
...why not just order a rebuilt tranny from Vertex??? and have your trusted Indy replace it? The INdy will band the core to the incoming shipping pallet so it can be picked up for your core charge refund.
I'll make a plug for a transmission from G-Box if you need one:

Amazing transformation from the stock box. Really nice, positive shifting. And the price was very good. My indy shipped my core and received the new one in a giant cooler.
Had mine rebuilt earlier this spring. It was popping out of first gear when engaging transmission after a stop and had a very loud whine regardless of gear or speed.
