Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I know there were remote-locking keys at some point on the 993s, but maybe someone on the forum knows what model year transponder keys were first used on 996s.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, can someone tell me how the remote locking key works on a 996? There's a code that comes with the key, and I believe the key talks with some sort of electonic control unit (box) in the car that triggers the door/hood lock motors to open or close. That's pretty much how this works on other cars, like my wife's Lexus. In her car, the ECU component is the actual engine computer. Does anyone know what gizmo exactly inside the 996 talks to the key? Reason I'm asking ... I am going to retrofit this into an earlier Porsche with power door locks, so will be trolling EBay and other sources to get a key and box. BTW, if anyone has the wiring diagram section that shows the wiring connections for the box I'm referring to, that would be a great help also. Many thanks!

POST 2Original post

That's a tough one. The key code in the key was set to talk to the car's computer and that one only not some control unit so I am not sure how exactly you would go about what you are trying to do. This is why you can't buy a key on eBay and have the dealer "program" it for your car. Won't work.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So the computer it talks to is the Motronic engine control? That's what I didn't know, because the transponder-type key that is used as an anti-theft does talk only to the Engine computer. I'm sure Porsche adopted transponder keys at some point, so I would really be looking for how they implemented the remote locking function before that. I know there were remote-locking keys at some point on the 993s, but maybe someone on the forum knows what model year transponder keys were first used on 996s. I know Lexus introduced them in MY 2000 ... Thanks

I know, I know. I can't believe I will be hitting my mid-30s later this year. Before I know it, I will be cashing SS checks.
