This Indy is not really set up as a 'Porsche' Indy - even thought they replaced the bad engine with the reman that is in the car now.

My 08 Cayman S used KWP2000 for OBDII communication -- ditto my Turbo while Boxster uses ISO-9141-2 -- and the CS at least CAN for what I think Porsche system diagnostic tool lists as "comfort bus" which was used in the case of my CS to talk to the various items in the dash like the service engine soon controller, the radio, and other devices.

They want to start the troublsehooting process by replacing my T-stat - I would pay 290 bucks only for the labor since the tstat is covered by the 2-year reman warranty.

Suggestion
Knowing Porsche it uses ISO-9141-2 or KWP2000 for engine/drivetrain controller communication and either a proprietary bus using one or both CAN pins or some other discretionary pins for communication with other devices.

I asked if it is possible that the water pump could have suddenly failed and the response was maybe not "if Porsche didn;t use the plastic impellers that BMW tried once..." I asked them what the Porsche diagnostic machine indicated and they indicated that they only have an OBDII reader.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Had the car picked up for the same folks to re-diagnose a #3cylinder misfire that I got following the Indy replacing all six coil packs last Friday. The Indy is telling me that there are no codes for a 'misfire' (I did not erase the code when I read it on Sunday!) but they think the car is overheating. Why - because the temp needle is going up to 250. They want to start the troublsehooting process by replacing my T-stat - I would pay 290 bucks only for the labor since the tstat is covered by the 2-year reman warranty. I asked if it is possible that the water pump could have suddenly failed and the response was maybe not "if Porsche didn;t use the plastic impellers that BMW tried once..." I asked them what the Porsche diagnostic machine indicated and they indicated that they only have an OBDII reader. My question to the R-list community: isn't there another port on the car for a 'Porsche' diagnostic analyzer??? My fuel gage has alwyas gone from full to zero every now and then and I asked them if it was possible that my cluster was bad - they are not sure how to diagnose that. Sounds like I am at the wrong place.
Taylor is out of town until next Monday - what a pain.
Did your Indy mean that in pulling the codes no misfire codes were present?
There certainly are OBD II codes for misfire: P0300 is general misfire; P0301 to P0308 (or higher) denote the specific cylinder that is misfiring.
The Porsche diagnostics tool uses the OBDII connector.
Knowing Porsche it uses ISO-9141-2 or KWP2000 for engine/drivetrain controller communication and either a proprietary bus using one or both CAN pins or some other discretionary pins for communication with other devices.

There may even be a 3rd bus used to communicate with the safety restraint systems.
For concerns about coolant sensor and coolant temperature, use the OBD tool to view the coolant temperature reading in real time. Check hoses to see they warm up as coolant begins to flow. If t-stat has failed shut coolant hoses will remain cold as engine runs and obviously gets hotter.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Mac - thanks!!! Yes, he said that no codes were present, but he sounded kind of weak when I pressed him since I had seen code on Sunday and I did NOT clear it. Regretfully on my part, I did not writte down teh P-number associated with the code when i read it. Also - I have NEVER had an issue with any sort of overheating - the car has never gone above a little to the right of the 180 mark (190 or so?) so I'm having a real hard time comprehending that I've gone from a #3 cylinder misfire to overheating?!?! I t did not overheat the 95 degree day that I drove it and got the CEL. Should his OBDII tool read out temps and stuff realtime?? I know mine won't - I asked the mechanic if he had the Porsche diagnostic device (Durometer???) and it sounded like all they have is the OBDII thing. This Indy is not really set up as a 'Porsche' Indy - even thought they replaced the bad engine with the reman that is in the car now. At this point I am likley to direct them to not do anything and take it to a REAL Porsche Indy next week. I need to get me one of those durometer tools to be able to do all this cool stuff.
Marlon,
Could you please PM me which indy you are currently using? Taylor used to work on my car at one place, but then he left. I'm wondering if we go to the same shop.
Hah! Picked the car up and drove home today and it never went above a little to the right of the '180' mark. Even after some full throttle excursions. Good thing I directed them to NOT do any troubleshooting on the cooling system.
