I also checked the strut mount at the top of the trunk, to make sure they were tight.

The PO had installed a regular 2-way switch on a 3-Way circuit...took longer to write the check than it did for the electrician to figure it out

It seems all the bathroom GFI circuits ran through this one outlet.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
38 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I took the car on a local trip to the store last night, over some rough patches in the road through town. With the radio off for a change, I kept hearing what sounds like the steering wheel rattling around when hitting bumps (aside from the usual squeaks and leather on leather noises from the seats). Like I forgot to tighten the telescopic adjuster. Or something?
I read about loose shock mounts, if this was the case, would I hear it as if it were INSIDE the car? Or am I hearing vibration from outside that transfers to the inside?
All in all, the car doesn't feel solid as a rock, or at least it doesn't sound solid, know what I mean?
the old ship has some creaks and grones ehe ?
So its tough to tell as sound often tranfers quite a ways from the source. I would suggest removing the front wheels and making the car really stable on some stands and getting in there. Try banging with your fist, a rubber mallot, pull on parts, wiggle them, use your weight and really push stuff around. Bang up and down and left and right, fore and aft.
You should be able to find something - might need a spare pair of ears too.
If not, have an indy shop do the same, they know what and where to look and most likely will find something like tie rod ends, drop links, a bushing or some other small part that need replacement - you may also need an alignment when done -

Ha! It must be Batts, I thought he was dead!
It sounds like all my front lug bolts are loose. Maybe I should re-torque, before bringing it to the mechanic.
Yeah, it probably is bushings that are worn, causing a loose rattly sound/feel. But at 21k miles? Or is it a suspension pressure / time issue regardless of miles? To the mechanic it will go, probably Monday. Bye bye $$!
do you have an alingment guy? You might consider that route... if he is really sharp on PCars just tell him whats symptoms you have and he can swap parts and align it all at once.... I know my guy would be happy to look at it for a very low cost or even free - he just loves these cars and would be there to look and help
just a thought
Nice, but my guy is also glad to look and check stuff - at a charge of $150 per hour! He's an air cooled snob, and works on later 911's because he has to. He does know the cars though.
I like the current snob! Close, and friendly.
Here's an update: I turned the wheel with the car off, while in the nice quiet garage. I hear a clunk when I turn the wheel each way - kind of high pitched, between a click and a clunk if that makes any sense. Does that point more to bushings, ball joints, etc? Or do they all do this?
Ditto on the clunk. My current suspect [just from reading other threads] is tie rods, particularly the inner ones. I'm still pretty unfamiliar with this car, so I'm not just going at it quite yet.

I checked RennTech, and found a common cause of a clunk in the front end is loose or shot drop links.
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...13118&hl=clunk
Easy to check/replace, $300+ for parts though. I'm going to put the car on stands in the front and check mine to see if they are loose, or in need of replacement tomorrow (weather permitting).
Thats what mine was - $300 is WAY high for parts... I bought mine local for $165 for both - sunset would surely be less and it not an emergency repair... Very easy job...
you should lift the weight off the wheel though to check it and replace it...I hit mine with my fist... it was simple to know right away there were shot
I guess some mail order parts places charge list price! I'll check with Sunset.
So, if they are loose, does that mean tightening the nuts wont get them back to where they should be? Or once they are loose, they wear out?
it is a ball and socket - the ball is threaded, thats what you tighten to the car... but the socket is just a pressed piece that traps the ball in place.. .once the socket becomes loose there is no way to re-form it around the ball...
ball being loose in the socket causes the rattle noise _ this is the same concept for all ball joints, tie rod ends, and drop links so the sound is the same but produced by different means....
make sense?
I would think drop links would be one of the cheapest components for the car - $165.0!??!?!
Any advantage to go with turbo links, or just stick with standard? (Not planning to 'lower' the car yet)
Oh, I get it. The pieces are joined like ball joints, and the drop link unit bolts to the sway bar and strut tower. So when they wear, the ball joint part wears, not the part that bolts to the suspension. From the photo of the drop link, it looked like a solid piece, causing my confusion. Thanks.
Pellican has them for $82 each. I guess that's high! I thought you would have to replace all 4 at once-or do you usually only need the front replaced? My $300+ quote was for all 4 drop links.
$300 for 4 is OK - I would replace them in pairs as a minimum - glad it made sense
I am not sure on the C4 / Turbo but gt3 used different ones for sure
So I picked the most humid disgusting morning (yesterday) to put the car on jack stands in the front, remove the front wheels, and poke around my suspension to see what was causing that strange clunking. I checked out my drop links - tight. Sway bar bushings, fine. Nothing loose or worn looking. Great. I also checked the strut mount at the top of the trunk, to make sure they were tight. Check. So after sweating like Nixon for an hour, I reach into my spare tire cover to get my handy tire mounting hanger, and what do I find? The heavy tow hook had fallen out of the tool bag, and was lying on the bottom of the spare tire cover, resting against the spare tire rim! Guess what was making that clunking noise whenever I hit a bump?? Yup! Problem solved, the hard way! Thanks for all your advice. Next time when I hear something clunking around in the front, I'll check the trunk!
Yup, I was all set to bring the car to Autohaus. Gene would have found nothing wrong, or, start changing out the usual suspects. All because of a tool rattling around in the trunk! Pheww is right!
I think you should run down to your indy shop, bring him a 6 pack - and say... this because I didnt need you !! - Tell him the story and have a good laugh
WTG !!
Hey I think we've all had those moments...
Mine happened when I called an electrician to my house because one of our bathrooms had lost power. I checked all the circuit breakers and everything seemed okay. I tried to troubleshoot for quite some time and finally gave up and called for help.
He came in, looked in my garage and found a GFI outlet that had been tripped. Pressed the button and all was fixed. It seems all the bathroom GFI circuits ran through this one outlet.
It took me longer to write the check than it did for him to "fix" the problem. I lost a few man points that day...
Thats nothing - I came home one day when my kids were little and the house "smelled real funny" - outside too... we just had a new gas line run (was oil heat) and I thought... holy crud.. everyone out !!
I called the fire dept to have them come have a look.... they sent them ALL!!! I mean there were 5 fire trucks 2 ambulances and the natural gas company ALL in my culdesack.... Firemen running into the house with oxygen tanks on and axs in hand... me and the wife and kids standing in the yard thing WTF????
WOW - neighbors all sowing up....
a real big production -
20 minutes later, it was determined that my wife had moved the garbage pail out to the porch because one of the recently changed diapers was real foul.....in fact ... it really stunk after sitting in the sun fro a while!!
explain that one to ALL your neighbors
LOL !!! Right before we sold our previous house I got fed up with the downstairs lights not being able to be turned off and on from the top of the stairs for the past six years. Troublshot till the cows came home and could not figure it out. Finally called in the electrician and he took a 1milisecond look at the switch and said "It's your switch..." HUH!?!?! The PO had installed a regular 2-way switch on a 3-Way circuit...took longer to write the check than it did for the electrician to figure it out
That's not so bad. It's not like YOU were willing to turn off the power and trouble shoot switches and wiring, right? That's not as bad as writing a check for a GFI outlet that was tripped!
