993 and the Boxster S are both G class - which means they should run similar lap times.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone have any published track data that compares lap times for the 993, 996 and Boxtster S?

POST 3Original post

Are you looking for track times to pick a track car? Racing class determines all, so go by that. But if you're thinking that track times have any bearing on usable street performance, then Porsche is a perfect example of how that doesn't work.

What do you mean by your comment?

POST 5Original post

I mean that the geometry changes and tech add-ons of the 996 and newer cars give them much more usable street performance. They're just that much more forgiving and easy to drive. With perfect knowledge of a given corner, I could go just as fast in my old 993 (or even my heavily modified '71) as I can in my 996, but in the real world of unknowns and confidence margin, the 996 is much faster. Note that if you're seriously considering a 993, you may be asking the wrong question. Even while you're going slower, the 993 will be a lot more fun to drive. Best to get it out up front: Do you want a track-only car or a street car? Do you want the fastest car, or the most interesting to drive?

POST 6Original post

Published? PCA and POC GCR's have specific class divisions that classify a 996 in a faster class than a 993 or boxster. You can go to PCA.org and look up club racing results and get a general idea of what kind of cars can do what.

POST 7Original post

As the agove post explains, the 996 chassis is quantitatively faster than the other two mentioned above, on track or otherwise... You may be able to have more fun in a 993 going slower, because the limits of the car are lower, this may be an advantage on the street, but then again a 993 is more than fast enough to get one in trouble on the street too...

POST 8Original post

******996******* 993 **********986 Should I explain?

POST 9Original post

I had two 993's - both very fun to drive, but too many little idiosynchrancies to explain. 993 - very 'raw', although more civilized than my previous 991's. 996 - noticeably more powerful, but WAY more 'civilized' than the 911. Based on my street driving experience, the 996 would be faster on the track. I get a feeling that I would be moving the steering wheel a lot in a 993 and much less so in the 996. If you want to track a car, just get a nice 944S - it will fly around a track. Or even a 928 - I used to marvel the 928's going around the Auto-X course at Jack Murphy stadium - no drama, just very manageble speed. The 930 on the other hand, demonstrated a lot of noise and 'huff & puff', but was slower than the 928.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great feedback guys. Yes, i am considering each of these cars for my first Porsche. I initially focused on finding a 993 but not finding many in this area, I test drove a Boxster S. I liked it very much. Then thought that if that was so nice, the 996 may be nice as well. When I drove the C4 Cab I was very impressed. I have been able to find one 993, and I think Marlon hit it on the head - the 993 felt more uncivilized and "idiosynchratic"(?). Pedals way over to the right, loud (he had an aftermarket exhaust), and had that - sorry guys -VW bug feel (i.e. light front end and rear weight bias). Porsche has done a great job on making the 996 feel more balanced. I drove a 997 and found that to be almost Lexus-like. I am sure I am stepping on alot of toes here - so sorry. I want to want the 993, but I am not sure I will be happy with it. But I am not too keen on the reliability problems of the 996.

Again - I've owned two 993's following a handful of 911's. If I could get a 993 turbo 'cheap' I'd consider it. However, the 996 is BIGGER car too - so it results in a little more cockpit space than the 993. The 993 is a bit*h to maintain, even to simply change the oil - it was a pain. I am 'growing' on the 996 - my seat of the pants (SOP) says that it's faster on the street.

In PCA racing, cars are grouped by classes which tries to keep HP/Weight ratio close. The higher your class, the faster your car. In order of classes: 928's are in Class E or F [depending on year] 993 and the Boxster S are both G class - which means they should run similar lap times. Early 996 are in H Class Later 996s are in I Class As for lap times, you can guestimate that each faster class is a second or two better. But there are too many factors to consider for it to be a rule, e.g., length of track, conditions, tires, driver, etc. Often, a properly sorted E class car with a fast driver will beat a G/H/I car. All things being equal, late model 996s will be the fastest on the track. -td
